Nekusar, the Mindrazer

Legendary Creature — Zombie Wizard

At the beginning of each player's draw step, that player draws an additional card.

Whenever an opponent draws a card, Nekusar, the Mindrazer deals 1 damage to that player.

I would say to tone back the amount of control. Are you going for life gain using Oloro, or is he a placeholder for now? If you are going for card draw, I'd recommend using Nekusar, the Mindrazer instead, but if you like the life gain then we should focus on how to use it more than just to gain life. I ask because you mentioned liking Sheoldred. She has a draw mechanic and gain life mechanic.

The most and best wheel cards are in and , so you need at least one of those colors, and preferably both. Xyris, the Writhing Storm and

Breaking it down, wheeling has four key parts: you discard, you draw, opponents discard, and opponents draw. This is a very simple, slightly curated list of commander options that care about at least one of these.

"Whenever you draw"

"Whenever you discard"

"Whenever an opponent draws"

"Whenever an opponent discards"

Some side options are reanimator, since you're going to be filling graveyards fast, and spellslinger, since most of the straightforward options are instants and sorceries.

BenTim yes my main focus is wheels, but my other option is Thassa's Oracle. Yes I guess I do have a lot of mana fixing in this deck. My goal is to have a wheel or 2 happen on the turn Nekusar, the Mindrazer comes out.

First: welcome aboard! I’m always super-excited when new folks give magic a shot! Second: I’m a strong believer in building a deck so that it isn’t too reliant on one specific card, even the commander. I would look at how you want the deck to work overall, for starters. If you want a primarily “damage your opponents through card draw” then you might want to adjust the whole deck (looking at things like Nekusar, the Mindrazer). If you like zombies, which seems to be the case, I would recommend looking at all your zombies to see the different ways they work together (triggers when they die, triggers when they deal damage, bringing them back from the graveyard, etc). And don’t lose track of their easy strength: bulldozing your enemies under piles of zombies! One of the big challenges with magic, is there is a LOT going on; a million options. There is a ton of fun to be had in fine-tuning a specialized machine of a deck, but that comes with the risk of someone monkeywrenching it with a single card. I love the idea of “drawing sheoldred will be a wonderful, force-multiplier surprise”... I worry about the idea of “I have to draw sheoldred or else my deck won’t work”. This is a lot of typing, so I apologize for that. I always catch myself wishing I could talk to you folks at a LGS or restaurant or something for these threads. It would be so much easier lol.

DemonDragonJ on Should I Put Orcish Bowmasters …

I am contemplating putting Orcish Bowmasters into my Nekusar, the Mindrazer EDH deck, since their ability will be awesome in that deck, but I am not certain what card I should remove to make room for them.

The most logical card to replace is Kederekt Parasite, since that card requires that I control a red permanent in order for its ability to trigger; the bowmasters do have a higher mana cost and also do not trigger of the first card that each opponent draws each turn, but, in exchange for that, the bowmasters can strike any target and they also amass an army, which could become massive, if the deck plays properly. Theoretically, I could also replace Underworld Dreams, since that card is not a creature, and doing so would also reduce my deck’s mana curve, which is always nice, although the high monetary cost of the bowmasters is also a factor to consider, as well.

What does everyone else say about this? Should I put Orcish Bowmasters into my Nekusar deck?

I'm at work, so I can't do a thoroughly search for you, but I believe you might get inspiration from Nekusar, the Mindrazer decks. His most effective builds are Windfall-like cards plus Megrim/Underworld Dreams effects with Waste Not out.

Also, run all 2-cmc untapped ramp you can get your hands on: it'll make your deck run smoothly as butter. Azorius Signet, Orzhov Signet, Talisman of Progress, Talisman of Hierarchy, Fellwar Stone.

If you're interested, I can give you more comprehensive advice once I get home. Your build might benefit from some tweaks.

I feel like Curiosity combos pretty well with Nekusar, the Mindrazer or Ophidian Eye
