Mazemind Tome

Artifact

, Put a page counter on Mazemind Tome: Scry 1. (Look at the top card of your library. You may put that card on the bottom of your library.)

, , Put a page counter on Mazemind Tome: Draw a card.

When there are four or more page counters on Mazemind Tome, exile it. If you do, you gain 4 life.

I am very excited to hear you have been playing my list and enjoying it! I still believe the deck is very powerful and consistently better than straight Azorius Control.

I'll address Oath of Kaya first - It is way too slow. You can't afford to be tapping out for a single target sorcery speed removal effect. Especially not with Sorin, Imperious Bloodlord + Vein Ripper dominating like it is. You need to have 2-3 mana available for counter spells the turn they can drop Sorin. Temporary Lockdown is good enough in the 3 mana removal slot and clears most of the things you care about early.

Second, Get Lost is a great catch all option that bridges the small gaps in utility amongst Fatal Push, Vanishing Verse, and Void Rend. The map tokens the opponent gets are mostly irrelevant with only the Amalia Combo decks caring about them. Theoretically you should be able to control the board enough that they never get to use them. With that said, Vein Ripper presents a threat with a protection ability this deck has not had to deal with before, so you could get away with a second copy of Void Rend over Get Lost you just lose an effect that can hit land creatures.

Third, I agree whether you like the card or not, Reckoner Bankbuster is a great card. It gives the deck extra reach that it desperately needs. Deduce is fine, if you absolutely do not want to play Bankbuster but you lose the imminent body and damage threat that Bankbuster gives. The token would give you revolt, but you'd need to run 4 copies for that to be consistent and casting a 3 mana Fatal Push feels not great. Mazemind Tome is far too little impact to make it in the list. Your life gain is handled by The Wandering Emperor and Shambling Vent. Search for Azcanta  Flip is too slow and is really bad in Pioneer due to all of the graveyard exile effects being used.

Fourth, If you personally prefer to run 1 basic and 1 Otawara, Soaring City that's fine too. It's really just personal preference and relevant to your area's meta. I find that Dovin's Veto and Void Rend are good enough in the control match up that Otawara is not necessary. The biggest drawback is that Otawara always costs 4 mana game 1 and has a small chance to cost less in games 2/3. The very first iteration of the deck had both Otawara and Eiganjo, Seat of the Empire but I found I was being wastelanded by Field of Ruin too often and utilizing the channel abilities so rarely that I just cut them in favor of basics.

Finally, yes The End made it into the deck. It is the best possible removal option against so many creatures that decks rely on to win. Greasefang, Okiba Boss, Arclight Phoenix, Mayhem Devil, Vein Ripper (if you can pay the ward), and Amalia Benavides Aguirre are all game winning targets for it. Honestly I have even been considering cutting the Rest in Peace for a second copy of the end. I also swapped Make Disappear out for No More Lies. It is just a far better card in every way.

@Profet93

I'm still assembling the deck (expect the last pieces to be in my hands this week)

  1. I like Mazemind Tome, but will need to playtest it before making a cut call on that. If that goes out, I'll probably replace it with Rise of the Eldrazi.
  2. Don't want to get rid of Karn Liberated. I like him, and I have a borderless version I want to see table time.
  3. Blinkmoth Well, does not seem that important to me. Arch of Orazca is for sure a cut candidate. Could make room for Sensei's Divining Top.
  4. Yeah, no change
  5. Not win more. Adds a nicely scaling ramp at X >7, would not be without it. Voltaic Key combo is just a bonus, but cutting it would reduce value of adding Voltaic Key in the first place.
  6. Not going to cut Rogue's Passage. I feel I owe the table (and myself) some way to make those Eldrazi count! But I may be able to drop lands, just not too happy about it
  7. Budget is not a real concern, and I do have a metalworker somewhere. I don't think it will add enough to the deck, as I want my artifacts on the table and not in hand.
  8. Drownyard Temple is for sure not important. Can also do without Sanctum of Eternity though.
  9. I can't really find a good use case for Rise of the Eldrazi. I do think Artisan of Kozilek carries its weight with Annihilator 2. But could be a valid swap. They are both candidates for swapping in ulamog, the ceasless hunger

I guess potential changes could be:

NV_1980 thanks for you input!

I already have Ugin, the Ineffable as well as Nevinyrral's Disk in the list.

In the draw department, I shy away from sorcery speed draws like Introduction to Prophecy because I'd like to have as much open mana as I can to allow interactions when it's not my turn. Also, I'd rather ramp than play an expensive drop like Mind's Eye and pay additional ~3 during each opponent's turn. 2-drop draw engines like Mazemind Tome and Endless Atlas would be the best for this.

As for the Urza's Incubator, it's true that I've been eyeing this for a while. This can cheat Ulamog way earlier than I already could (imagine I also have Inspiring Statuary on the field-- oh boy, that's free 3!). But just for more flexibility, I'm leaning towards Cloud Key. And if I would spend 20 bucks on an Urza's Incubator, I guess it'll be for a Sensei's Divining Top instead.

Hi Spaghetti! You're one of the few people on here who still update their Obzedat decks frequently. I also have an Obzedat deck, it's my oldest and probably my favorite deck I own, but we both have completely different strategies which is good fun.

I love your approach to the build!

My deck is linked here if you wanna check it out, mines an Orzhov ETB deck, but it has a similar strategy of pacing the game down and punishing opponents. Link (https://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/juggled-to-death/)

Shadrix Silverquill is sick, I should maybe try to squeeze that in for more card advantage.

Have you considered Tome of Legends? Card is insane value with Obzedat entering the battlefield every turn. It might be worth running over Mazemind Tome. Another great card you might like is Preston, the Vanisher. You get an extra Obzedat ETB trigger every turn, but it does suck that you have to sac the copy to legend rule. It's deffinitly better in mine as an ETB deck, but it could be fun in your deck too.

I see you have Kaya, Intangible Slayer in your maybe board, I was thinking about adding Kaya to mine too, the hexproof is nice, but it's so much mana!

Anyways, glad to see another Obzedat playing in todays EDH scene, there aren't a lot of us due to the overwhelming popularity of other Orzhov commanders.

Also, I would recommend Quicksand in place of Cryptic Caves. I think it is more likely you'll want want to give -1/-2 to an attacking non-flier than to use its draw a card ability. After four lands I tend to scry away other lands in favor of enchantments or cards I can cycle.

Bag of Holding is worth looking at. It might be better than Simic Signet. Especially since it lets you cycle your cards more than once. Mazemind Tome or Mnemonic Sphere are possibilities, but I think Bag of Holding is better.

I think that you should replace Burning Sands with Zealous Conscripts since the Sands conflicts with Kiki-Jiki and adding the Conscripts gives you a potential combo win condition.

You could also run Karn, the Great Creator to combo with Mycosynth Lattice, locking down your opponents' lands and mana rocks. You could possibly replace Tectonic Instability for Karn.

You probably need some more card draw too, although it's kind of hard to find efficient fits. Endless Atlas is pretty good but doesn't work as well alongside the spells that also destroy your own lands. Mazemind Tome helps but can only be activated a few times. Chandra's Regulator is card filtering.

+1 because the name is catchy. Also, you may want to add more hubs to this so more eyes can get on it.

Also, Preordain, Hakka, Whispering Raven, Cavalier of Gales, Diviner's Portent, Faerie Seer, Hedron Alignment, Mazemind Tome, Marit Lage's Slumber (swapping to Snow-Covered Island of course), Retreat to Coralhelm, Silver Raven, Thassa, God of the Sea, and Treasure Map  Flip would be good additions.

I never realized how much support a scry commander could have - If they ever add cards that create material; creatures, treasures, clues, ect. I can see this being a powerhouse in those mid-optimized games.

darkmus No worries! Having now gotten a couple of additional games under my belt with the deck, I was also going to mention Mazemind Tome. I swapped those in for the Arguel's as well and have been liking them. Can still get the draw off of them which is nice.

I have a set of Liesa, Forgotten Archangel on my desk right now. I think I am also going to try slotting one in to see what happens. I also am not totally sure about how those triggers go, but it does seem to me like it matches the way Bishop is, so I think it would work the same way. Might just be something that makes me actually load up Arena to just see what happens.

Fateful Absence is something I have been thinking about giving a go as well, seems like it would be a decent try at least. I have thrown in a Savai Triome into the deck and often throw a fetch at it at the early turns since it is always tapped, but it allowed me to try Prismatic Ending with a bit more range and that has been doing pretty nicely for me at the moment as well. My local meta only has a couple of decks that things larger than 3 are a problem, at least that I have played against lately.
