Rules Q&A

Loam Lion

Creature — Cat

Loam Lion gets +1/+2 as long as you control a Forest.

MrHawtStuff,

You have lots of cat lords, Feline Sovereign, Kaheera, the Orphanguard, King of the Pride, etc. as well it works with self-modifiers like Loam Lion and Qasali Pridemage the new cat Sovereign Okinec Ahau can permanently +1/+1 counter your cats. Notably missing (in your maybeboard) Regal Caracal would give everyone lifelink too.

Glittering Lynx seems off, the isn't that disruptive for an opponent if it matters. I think you're trying to maximize your MV 1-drop cats, but Arcbound Mouser would give you a second Trained Caracal with upside instead. Lion Sash is also nice, but it is MV 2-drop.

The other new cat would be good: Kutzil, Malamet Exemplar, he could replace something like a vanilla Leonin Skyhunter or a mana sync like Bronzehide Lion or a really high cmc creature with low value like Jareth, Leonine Titan who probably is a win-more at MV6 that won't turn a loss into a win, really he MV7 to activate. Card in that MV slot has to be extremely impactful. Cats like Scrounging Bandar also work well with this new cat. Limiting interaction on your turn especially flashing in +3 spells (Indomitable Might) is really nice.

Leonin Relic-Warder is nice for controlling artifacts/enchantments and providing another MV2 cat.

Everybody Lives! gives another Heroic Intervention type effect.

Farseek is MV2 but I'm betting Harvest Season probably does more work at MV3. 35 lands seems like a lot for a low curve, maybe some low MV ramp like Talisman of Unity. Boseiju, Who Endures is a good forest but it's stupid expensive.

Rancor is a really nice trample/evasion enabler. Or like a Shadowspear or something which also helps out with Indestructibles blocking your cats. Pridemalkin is on a cat body, but don't like the MV3.

Mirri's Guile is okay, but a bit of a trap, way more value at MV2 with Sylvan Library

Song of the Dryads I get for locking out a commander but some instant interaction like Stroke of Midnight are usually more utility in more situations, might be a meta card though.

Eladamri's Call will bring up consistency to draw the finisher cats.

Cheers

Icbrgr on Pioneer Artifact Aggro: Where's Ensoul?

Ever since the beginning of Frontier/Pioneer Ensoul Artifact aggro has had a presence in the competitive meta.

Ive seen the deck evolve over time to be less and now be more for the sideboard answer cards/removal and Ingenious Smith/Michiko's Reign of Truth  Flip... which makes sense and all...but why has Ensoul Artifact fallen out of favor in these decks?

I always thought that the main appeal to the deck was making an Ornithopter a 5/5 flyer or slapping it onto Darksteel Citadel for 5/5 indestructible and just close out the game quickly with an obnoxious early beater that either was harder to remove or had evasion... combined with whatever artifact synergy the decks running.

Is Ensoul Artifact suffering the same fate as Kird Ape/Loam Lion/Wild Nacatl where although aggressively costed it just isnt enough anymore? I see some lists still running the card on some Youtube lists but they are starting to be over 6 months old now.

I personally still run Ensoul Artifact in a list featuring Patchwork Automaton with Reinforced Ronin/Network Disruptor... I feel like I have a moderate/acceptable success/winrate with the decklist; but admittedly I dont play Pioneer very seriously and just attend the LGS that hosts Pioneer ever once in awhile because its a bit of a drive to get there as opposed to other shops that play EDH/Modern far more conveniently for me.

Looks fun!

I would personally cut the Spike Feeder and replace it with Regal Caracal - unless you want to go all in on combo win and add Felidar Sovereign.

Feline Sovereign is another really awesome cat that could do some major work in games.

I'd suggest cutting some things like Savannah Lions / Sacred Cat /Loam Lion which generally aren't going to be too impactful and add Feline Sovereign, Adorned Pouncer, and Regal Caracal. Adorned Pouner in particular is awesome, since double strike means you basically get your eminence ability twice ^_^

If you're going the one drop bushwhacker route, some of the recommendations I may add:

-Play more fetches. This is so you can power Kird Ape, Loam Lion, and Wild Nacatl more consistently and effortlessly.

-When you are already playing fetches, Narnam Renegade is a better version of Ape and Lion.

-Atarka's Command can provide burst of unexpected damage in a single turn since you are planning on going wide with one drops.

Love a good cat deck! You should check out Kaheera Cats and Chariots :3 by NonetheWeisser for some additional inspiration. Definitely one of the most competitive tribal cat decks out there and if I could toot my own horn my version of cat tribal focuses more on token creation but it is fairly potent non the less as well (Feline Feelings). Lots of good discussion in the comments of those two decks as many of the cards you are either playing or considering are in those. Might help you make some educated decisions if you were on the edge of playing one cat versus another.

Otherwise, it almost feels a bit like you are going for some +1/+1 counter synergy with this deck. Collective Effort and Unbreakable Formation are something I have played in +1/+1 counter decks and Ajani, Caller of the Pride provides another way to get counters while having some finishing moves as well. If that is the direction you are wanting, I would definitely recommend adding in a full playset of Metallic Mimic to bring cats in with +1/+1 counters and Hardened Scales to double that effect. Adding a few copies of Gavony Township might give you late game options as well. If that is not the direction you are wanting, I might suggest Dromoka's Command over Collective Effort. Slightly less potent and upside but cheaper and a bit more flexible. I would also suggest Heroic Intervention over Unbreakable Formation for the same reasons.

Also, you may want to look at the lands a bit. You only have 10 ways to generate a mana. Loam Lion is a beast if could add something like Temple Garden. Wooded Bastion would be a cheaper alternative if cost is an issue.

Anyway, hope something there was useful and happy brewing!

wallisface - You were definitely right about upping the mana. Only done a handful of play testing and since I increased it to 23 lands it has been performing much better and just "feels" like I am not hoping to draw a land to be able to play one of my higher CMC cards. Just consistently starting games with 3-4 lands in hand. The addition of the extra 1-drop cats has also been a big improvement as Temple Garden and Loam Lion are a pretty good move on turn 1.

You might be right about Heroic Intervention. So far only one game where I have used it so might be swapping that out for some additional removal spells/creatures. We shall see...Thanks again for your suggestions!

NonetheWeisser - Only a single Esika's Chariot in so far but it has gotten played a few games. Already love it as those cat tokens it generates when it is played are so nice and the populate ability is so good...In one of the games I had Anointed Procession out so that was the final nail in the coffin. Thanks for the inspiration!

Icbrgr on Modern format without horizons

I dont think Modern horizons sets are the cause for the feeling of Modern becoming a rotating format... I think the real culprit is Standard has had ALOT of powerful sets over the years... like ever since the great reboot with Magic Origins it feels like the game just keeps getting access to better/stronger/value cards.

Kird Ape and Wild Nacatl and Loam Lion just aren't that impressive these days.

Territorial skycat is a little awkward to build around, but since you are in selesnya have you considered a cat tribal variant?

Steppe Lynx, Wild Nacatl , Loam Lion , Qasali Ambusher to get use out of lands. Feline Sovereign, Pride Sovereign, King of the Pride as lords.

Scythe Tiger in the sideboard for control matchups.

It'd certainly offer an aggro strategy to mix things up with your regular playgroup, so that they can't overprepare for this midrange/combo style.
