Lazotep Plating

Instant

Amass 1. (Put a +1/+1 counter on an Army you control. If you don't control one, create a 0/0 black Zombie Army creature token first.)

You and permanents you control gain hexproof until end of turn. (You and they can't be the targets of spells or abilities your opponents control.)

mooffalosystema i have played a load of competitive mill, winning tourney with it, and know full-well the ins-and-outs of competitive play.

If you do the math on Mind Funeral youā€™ll find that it is absolutely terrible when compared to almost all other 2-and-3 mana mill spells. Thereā€™s a very good reason no competitive builds ever run that card.

Indiscriminate discard is always worse than being able to target and remove the card that actually poses a threat. There will be a bunch of games where Inquisition is only able to grab the cards the opponent doesnā€™t really card about. Not being able to grab a Sheoldred, the Apocalypse or Scion of Draco or Murktide Regent or Yawgmoth, Thran Physician is a massive mistake when these are all very-commonly seen threats.

Your assessment of Lazotep Plating baffles me. It only temporarily stalls some combo decks, and feels negligible anywhere else. I think Storm is the only deck that would ever need to be cautious of this card, and nobodies playing Storm atm anyway cause itā€™s bad. If your local playgroup somehow validates this cards existence, itā€™s still only a sideboard card at-best (and even then, a terrible one - thereā€™s sooo many better options!).

Some thoughts:

  • Lazotep Plating seems really underwhelming considering you have no permanents outside of lands, so all you're really making is a piddly 1/1 army to act as block-fodder. Why not something more impactful here?

  • Why Inquisition of Kozilek instead of Thoughtseize? Particularly in any midrange/control matchup, Inquisition of Kozilek just doesn't hit enough targets. But even in combo decks there's a lot of high-mana cards you'd really be needing to hit.

  • Mind Funeral is possibly the most underwhelming mill card out there - there are a LOT better options.

No prob Profet93! I've used Seize the Spotlight before in my Anhelo, the Painter deck that eventually got recycled into this one. Seize the Spotlight definitely has that additional bit of upside, since my meta tends to skew a bit more aggro/go wide. I've used Lazotep Plating in another older deck, and liked the corner case protection of giving myself Hexproof on some occasions.

I'm waiting for the most recent Ixalan cards to hit the site, but a change that I am making to the deck is replacing Genasi Enforcers with Saheeli, the Sun's Brilliance. I've liked making token copies with her ability when I've play-tested so far.

Thank you for your detailed explanation, I sincerely appreciate it. Regarding Miscast and it's potential considerations, Seize the Spotlight is probably the best given it allows you to more easily get in combat damage and potentially draw cards + ramp. However, Lazotep Plating is kind of more like a counterspell with wide utility. Both are more expensive than 1 mana of course.

Thanks for the suggestions Profet93, I appreciate them. My thoughts on the suggestions and some of your questions:

  • Rhystic Study - Definitely a great card. I don't play it because I don't currently own a copy, but have played against it numerous times in my local metas. It's not the most fun for me to experience, so I'd rather spare others the "Do you pay the ?". I think Mystic Remora puts in plenty of work in this regard. My primary play group tends to pay the more often than not, so I do acknowledge its usefulness as a tax piece.

  • Berserkers' Onslaught - Pretty understandable to feel that way at first glance. I've liked it as a means of getting extra tokens on those haste-y combat damage connections. I haven't really had any moments where I regretted playing it.

  • Tragic Slip - Great removal piece. I didn't initially consider it for this deck, but have used it in the past in more aristocrats focused builds. Lots of stuff dies, so it's not that hard to get the Morbid clause. I'll consider it as a potential swap.

  • Reality Shift - I frequently play against graveyard utilizing strats, so I like to utilize exile removal whenever I can manage it. So far, I haven't really had any issue with a significant threat under the Manifest. More often than not it's been a land or non-creature spell.

  • Miscast - I've had some past success with this counter in other decks. I think in those situations, my opponents either were already tapped out, or couldn't pay the for whatever reason. I added this after some of the earliest games with the deck, where I felt I needed a couple of more cheap counterspell options. Some other stuff I've considered for this slot: Familiar's Ruse, Mizzium Skin, Lazotep Plating, Change of Plans, or Seize the Spotlight

Thanks a lot for your feedback carpecanum

Starting from the bottom: I agree with you and I think that's the biggest weakness of the deck. I still own cards like An Offer You Can't Refuse and Lazotep Plating which could help me solve that problem. But I have no clue what to cut for those. Any suggestions for that?

I initially ran Tainted Strike but I had to cut it for a removal spell, because I'm already quite short on those too... It does seem like a ton of fun though!

Plague Reaver is aweful. It's cheap, it's big, it's perfect! Completely missed that card. On behalf of my playgroup: Thank you

I think you could safely cut Raff, Weatherlight Stalwart or Balmor, Battlemage Captain, mostly because I don't think you're running enough of a volume on Instants and Sorceries to consistently. Since you're playing a very creature heavy strat, there are a variety of board protection effects you could run, depending on your budget:

The last 3 options aren't very budget, but Heroic Intervention and Akroma's Will are very helpful cards in EDH. If your play group is cool with it, you could always proxy them before purchasing.

Additionally you could add a couple more removal effects like:

The more you play the deck irl, the more you'll get a feel for what effects you like most and what synergizes well. Playing 5 colors as a new player is a bit ambitious, but kudos to you for taking it on. To make your play experience a bit easier, I'd recommend trying to make as many things in your deck be 1-2 colors as often as possible to reliably cast things.

Welcome to MtG and happy brewing!

thefiresoflurve Robe of Stars looks awesome. I had originally put Lazotep Plating in there as protection for my commander...think that might be a good 1 for 1 swap?

Grind thanks for the recs! Any suggestions on 1 for 1 replacements? Seems like Mask of Memory is a better version of Mask of Riddles (minus the Fear, but this deck gives me other evasion options) and maybe Teferi's Ageless Insight could be a solid substitute for Bident of Thassa. Or I could just find a way to run them together and get some wacky card draw
