Very cool deck design. There are a lot of nice interactions here!

I think you might want to lean a little bit into the main theme here. Cards like Flamewake Phoenix, Rakdos Charm, and Kulrath Knight are good but don't synergize with your strategy super well.

I think you're going to want to get rid of your mountains and put in dual lands instead; you're probably going to be running mostly black cards by the final iteration of the deck, and since Underworld Dreams requires so much specifically-black mana to cast, it's going to be difficult if too much of your mana is red. It's still helpful to splash but I wouldn't use up land spaces.

My main suggestions for your deck are:

  • Dark Deal can make your opponent draw a bunch of cards at once, dealing a ton of damage.
  • The Raven Man can benefit from your opponents discarding cards, which they probably will due to the existence of maximum hand sizes.
  • Fate Unraveler has the same effect as Underworld Dreams while also being able to attack and block, which is great to have.
  • Ob Nixilis, the Hate-Twisted has the effect as well and has some good removal. It's a bit weak in that your opponent can just attack it, but it's still helpful to have and can buy you some time if you're in a sticky situation.

Sheoldred, the Apocalypse is super helpful in this deck and works super well with your strategy. It's also way over your budget, which is the main problem with it. It doesn't seem worth it to me.

Good first draft, I'm excited to see where you take this!

pea_body All of your suggested changes sound great! Sounds like you have a pretty good idea of the changes to make :)

As far as the higher mana cards go, I think aiming to run 3x Skinrender and 3x Kulrath Knight (with no Archfiend of Ifnir) is probably a good mix. With your beforementioned killspells added, and around 24 lands, I think you'll be able to easily sustain 6 4-mana cards relatively well.

Black Sun's Zenith is a fine replacement for any of your cards, particularly a good replacement for Archfiend of Ifnir. It becomes an auto-win condition alongside Nest of Scarabs (just through the sheer number of scarabs you can generate from it).

I second the idea of cutting down to just 60 cards in 2 colors. Then, I'd try to identify the main gameplan you like to follow when playing the deck. That will inform any cuts, additions, and other revisions you make down the line.

The first archetype that jumps out at me is definitely knights. They are often Mardu () these days, but just Rakdos () should work just fine for casual play. You already have Belle of the Brawl , Barrow Witches , Charity Extractor , Embereth Paladin . Locthwain Paladin , Garna, the Bloodflame , Ogre Errant , Raging Redcap , and Tentative Connection which can definitely fit such a style. Most of the lower cost creatures and spells wouldn't be that bad either. I'll list some cards from the modern card pool under $5 that I think could be strong additions to such a deck.
Ashenmoor Liege , Bloodcrazed Paladin , Cavalier of Flame , Cavalier of Night , Champion of Dusk , Elite Headhunter , Embereth Shieldbreaker , Foulmire Knight , Hanweir Lancer , Hero of Oxid Ridge , Knight of the Ebon Legion , Kulrath Knight , Midnight Reaper , Murderous Rider , Olivia, Mobilized for War , Stormfist Crusader , and Weaselback Redcap are all knight creatures with various effects, costs, and price points that I see as playable. For more general knight synergy, Blacklance Paragon , Fervent Champion , Joust , Sigiled Sword of Valeron , Tournament Grounds , and my favorite, Smitten Swordmaster are options too. Toss in some solid removal like Lightning Bolt , Terminate , or Bedevil and you have the recipe for a strong tribal aggro deck.

The other major archetype I see being possible here is some sort of angel/dragon/demon big stuff deck. The problem is that such a deck is likely to be much slower, making it tougher to keep up in 1v1 games. Plus, a lot of those cards are legendary, so they tend to come with a hefty real-world price tag. Still, I've seen Kaalia of the Vast do some very scary stuff in casual. Such a deck would support your larger creatures as well as spells like Cauldron Dance and Victimize .

Kulrath Knight says hello.

On another note: I think the card should either be as it is, high CMC with repeated wipe and no drawbacks.

-- Or --

You could make it an active with the same drawbacks as Pestilence - you have to feed it to keep it around (creatures on the field) and it will also damage everyone (incl. players), so your life total can be a containing measure. You are unlikely to activate it if you're low on life, thus it has counter play options available to all colors. Since it applies -1/-1 counters I would say that just is not enough for the activation and it would have to be at minimum.

It could be considered to use -1/-1 until end of turn instead - ala Dead of Winter . It bypasses indestructibility, protections, and it allows you to utilize it defensively rather than just to kill. The activation could then be a for -X/-X until end of turn.

YourNeighborhoodGhost Totally forgot about her, I'll probably change Kulrath Knight for Liesa, good suggestion, thanks.

Since you’re running snow-covered lands you could run Extraplanar Lens and I’d also run Entomb if you’re looking for the world gorger combo.

A tutor I prefer to Dark petition is Diabolic Revelation since it can tutor up multiple cards for a similar cost, although I guess petition can then potentially cast the card you’ve tutored.

Since you seem to also have a -1/-1 counter theme you might find some use in Kulrath Knight and also Yawgmoth, Thran Physician is a power house for removal and draw.

Night Incarnate does not kill my important combo-pieces luckily. I also need to mention that in my local meta, there's a lot of small-creature high value decks, and Night Incarnate completely knocks them down if they overextend. It takes care of tokendecks that flood the field too, so I think the card is of high value in this list. Then again, it really depends on meta. I am currently playing a lot of EDH online through the PlayEDH discord channel (check it out!), where it has proven to be a solid situational card. Kulrath Knight is more of a situational card in this regard I think. He is mainly in there because our local Atraxa, Praetors' Voice player has the need to kick me for absurd amounts of damage occasionally haha. I will keep your feedback in mind though, for when our meta changes :)
