Ixalan's Binding

Enchantment

When Ixalan's binding enters the battlefield, exile target nonland permanent an opponent controls until Ixalan's Binding leaves the battlefield.

Your opponents can't cast spells with the same name as the exiled card.

Pixel_74 To my recollection, creatures are only creatures on the field. In other zones, they're either "cards" or on the stack, they're "spells." Nothing in the deck directly targets a creature. For example, it doesn't work with Ixalan's Binding because the target happens after the spell has resolved.

Hi, I had a summer math class and that basically drained me out. Also didn't see your comment until now (for some reason I didn't see the notification) Is Frantic Inventory good in the mainboard? Here's the problem: I don't have to win fast. I just have to win consistently and most of the time. I can slowly drag my opponents down until they get destroyed. So card draw might not be the best. Or is it? Also I am thinking of removing 1 Detention Sphere and 1 Ixalan's Binding and adding 2 Ashiok's Erasure in the mainboard. Or is the current state of exiles good?

amicdeep In play testing that counter spell has actually been really useful. I would suggest trying out the deck yourself first. What typically happens is I get down an Erayo and leave up protection, so sometimes turn 4, my opponent plays a small spell like a cantrip and then plays their real spell which I counter. Then the fourth spell is usually a cantrip of my own or their backup plan.

Flipping her consistently has not been a problem, but the deck runs her more as a value card with a potential synergy based lock, not as an all in combo. The main idea is to control my opponent, be it bouncing something with Reflector Mage and then casting Meddling Mage and naming the card I just bounced, works really well against decks with limited creatures. Alternatively there is Ixalan's Binding to lock down big threats like a Dovin planeswalker and such.

About the only thing the deck honestly needs is a few extra counterspells in the side board like Dovin's Veto and a side board spell to board wipe when needed, such as the new Vanquish the Horde or Doomskar

Some others not mentioned yet:

They're creatures though, not sure if you were looking for those kinds of suggestions but if you're going for a theme where stuff comes back over and over, they sure are classics for that!

Also a personal favourite that will just never ever go away unless he's specifically targeted with Ixalan's Binding :

  • Squee, the Immortal - who is also legendary if you need another commander idea that comes back again and again and again lol (and if he's the commander, the command zone gets around Ixalan's Binding)

neotazman: In your example, Ixalan's Binding will affect all cards that share a name with the combined cards. The regular rules of the game do account for situations where a card has multiple names (I believe because of some cards that were printed in the Conspiracy sets):

201.2a Two or more objects have the same name if they have at least one name in common, even if one or more of those objects have additional names. An object with no name doesn't have the same name as any other object, including another object with no name.

In the future: If you have a question related to an old discussion thread, it's better to ask the question in a new post versus replying to the old discussion. With the way this area of the site is set up, making a reply doesn't push a topic to the top of the list, so that means only the people who are still subscribed to receive notifications about it will be aware of your reply.

This deck looks pretty good, and after reading the comments, you seem to have put a lot of work into it. I do have a intentionally lower-powered deck with a basic aristocrat strategy. A card I really do like there is Doomed Traveler ( Doomed Dissenter is similar). Sgt.Pickles mentioned free sacrifice outlets. A very good, but very underrated one is Spawning Pit . You can sacrifice creatures, sometimes even in response to a kill spell, and then get multiple new tokens later. As many of your creatures have 1 toughness, Skullclamp could be a great addition, as well. If you were to include any combination of these three, Death Baron and Asha's Favor are what I'd cut for them. For removal spells, Ixalan's Binding is fine, but bonesplinter and/or Vicious Offering are great spells that even fit your strategy.

I spoke to iamhikari:

Plan: Pivot towards aristocrats, lower the CMC, maybe more taxing. Though I think going more into the Monarch theme might be more fun/unique. We can try this first:

For starters:

-1 Beseech the Queen
-1 Deliver Unto Evil
-1 Wild Ricochet
-1 Call the Coppercoats
-1 Assemble the Legion

Mana fix and ramp:

-1 Worn Powerstone
-1 Gilded Lotus
+1 Exotic Orchard
+1 Talisman of Conviction
+1 Wayfarer's Bauble
+1 Talisman of Hierarchy ...can also +1
Talisman of Indulgence , but it's slightly pricier.

Expand reach and lower CMC of your removal:

-1 Return to Dust
-1 Terminate
-1 Comeuppance
+1 Chaos Warp
+1 Generous Gift ....alternatively there are some 2 mana removal cards in Strixhaven that might be fun to try out.
+1 either Path to Exile or the cheaper Dire Tactics
+1 Soul-Guide Lantern

Fun monarch theme and control: +1 Court of Grace
+1 Court of Ambition
-1 Black Market
-1 Ixalan's Binding

Pivot to Aristocrats:

-1 Neheb, the Eternal
-1 Thief of Blood
-1 Tectonic Giant
+1 Cruel Celebrant
+1 Syr Konrad, the Grim
+1 Bastion of Remembrance

Still need to deal with your creatures and maybe do some more token generation or something. I'll keep thinking and get back to you.

Oh yeah, Tuvasa's all-in pillowfort. I don't have Ghostly Prison or Propaganda yet, but I have quite a lot of the other cards. Ixalan's Binding is fun against commanders :)
