ecd2294 on Rafiq of the Many

So I too have a Rafiq deck who is probably my favorite commander as well and the only deck I have yet to dismantle for something else. Like you mine is voltron style but with much more of a focus on enchantments/auras vs equipment, mainly because I just love Theros and the theme of it.

I've noticed my decks biggest weakness is Rafiq being a huge target of removal. To combat this I have put in other creatures that serve as backup to continue to keep smashing face in. Bruna, Light of Alabaster works great bringing back auras from the grave and hitting like a truck in the air. Danitha, Benalia's Hope and Danitha, New Benalia's Light do a bit of the same with relevant keywords. Galea, Kindler of Hope helps grab new stuff. And I recently liked my addition of Timber Paladin.

Love the theme and the list, Necramus! Have you considered Champion's Helm to grant Galea, Kindler of Hope hexproof and a nice +2/+2 buff? Solid candidate for Majora's Mask?

Does Galea, Kindler of Hope allow me to cast the Ysgard's Call adventure sorcery of Horn of Valhalla? I'm assuming not, because Galea says Equipment spell, but I'm just double checking... Thanks in advance!

bushido_man96 on Is Scroll Rack a Good …

I don't think Nekusar finds Scroll Rack to be all that useful. I use it in my Gishath, Sun's Avatar deck, but the use there is obvious; put fat dinos in my hand on top of the library, attack and cheat them into play. Galea, Kindler of Hope is another one that could probably make decent use of it. Unless you have ways to really move through your library, you just end up treading water.

(Yeah hey I'm Reece's friend and I had nothing else happening so I thought I'd take a peek at the deck. First of all, it's a pretty sweet deck, I love this commander and how you decided to build it. Everything I'm saying here are just suggestions to help you enjoy your deck more. Do with it what you will.)

  1. Due to the final activated ability on The World Tree, it actually has a color identity of all 5 colors, so it can't be run in this 3-color deck. If you want a great resource for finding better lands, I'd recommend looking on managathering.com
  2. Enlightened Tutor is pretty expensive money-wise, but of you're proxying or playing online it is a fantastic tutor that also sets the card to the top of your library to let Galea cast it with her ability
  3. This deck is pretty heavy on board wipes in my opinion, but if you like them, keep them. It might be worth running more ways to give your commander indestructible or totem armor such as Hammer of Nazahn or Eel Umbra so that she's not caught in the crossfire. These can also replace instants doing a similar thing for just 1 turn, such as Heroic Intervention
  4. Have a backup plan for if your opponents decide to kill Galea, Kindler of Hope every time she comes out before she can get protected. You may want to run more creatures to have other targets for your buffs. Many good options in the Maybeboard
  5. You have plenty of defensive interaction to protect yourself (maybe even too much), but not nearly as much offensive interaction to stop others. Cards like Beast Within or Generous Gift are incredible tools to deal with any problem. Or, consider more cards that have multiple modes such as Selesnya Charm or Primal Command so that you can choose when to help yourself or slow down opponents as needed
  6. Generally speaking you'll probably want more card draw. Spidersilk Net feels great when you cast it off the top of your library for free, but if your hand gets filled with cards like that you'll feel like you can't do anything. Sram, Senior Edificer is the perfect kind of card draw engine this deck wants to see, more things like him will help immensely.
  7. Since your deck isn't racing as fast as possible to get Galea out, ramp like Avacyn's Pilgrim and Llanowar Elves become a bit more of a liability. If you want more reliable ramp, consider switching them for more effects that put lands from your library into play. These effects have the added benefit of shuffling your deck afterwards, so once Galea is out you can use them to get a new card on top.
  8. Be very careful with "protection from color" effects in this deck. Giving a creature "protection from white" will cause any white auras attached to it to fall of and be sent to the graveyard, as they can no longer target the creature.
  9. Assault Suit is very funny. Use at your own risk...
  10. If you like Trophy Mage, you'll love Tribute Mage and Trinket Mage. Similarly:

Hope this helps! ~Yoshe

golgarigirl on OPTIMIZING precon deck "ADAPTIVE ENCHANTMENT"

To be honest, any improvement is based on how you want to play the deck and what kind of strategies/ subthemes you might want to play.

Estrid herself is often built as a The Chain Veil combo deck to enable lots of planeswalker ultimates. The enchantment theme enables a lot of card draw to go with it.

Most enchantment decks that are not going for a specific theme benefit from a draw engine in the command zone such as Tuvasa. I personally use Tuvasa, since she works as a decent Voltron commander as well. Taking away blue, Sythis, Harvest's Hand is a better card draw engine, but lacks combat ability.

Galea, Kindler of Hope is another option if you want to lean into Voltron even harder.

Hey, what you have so far is a strong start at upgrading the precon for your first deck, nice Hammer of Nazahn upgrade.

Currently you need to cut 24 cards to get to 100 cards. Some advice is start with cutting some lands because 43 lands is too much. Reduce it to 36 and if you think you need more mana then add more low converted mana cost (CMC) ramp sources or draw sources instead of lands.

Some lands to consider cutting:

All these lands always enter the battlefield (ETB) tapped and you have other lands that always do this too, but those other lands are better than these.

The next cuts to consider are some high CMC cards to reduce the mana curve.

Further cuts are some cards that are not as good as others here or have similar or the same effects.

Heirloom Blade and Reflections of Littjara are tribal cards that care about only one type of creature. That's not the strategy here since you have many different creature types. Skyclave Cleric  Flip and Tangled Florahedron  Flip are double face cards (DFC) that can be lands or played as the front face of the card and that can be helpful. The problem is the front face of the card is not worth playing even though they might be lands. Bala Ged Recovery  Flip is an example of a good DFC upgrade since front face is a good card and the bonus is that could be a land.

Suppression Field is a powerful card, but it affects equipment equip costs since that's an activated ability. Even if you control Puresteel Paladin with metalcraft activated you still have to pay 2 mana to equip the equipment to a creature you control. Puresteel will reduce the equip cost to 0, but then Field makes you pay an additional 2 mana to activate the equip ability. If an equipment is in your hand and you cast it or already on the battlefield you can't free equip if you control Field.

You have ways to get around having to pay for equip with attach. Difference is you're not equipping when you attach an equipment to a creature you control. The key word here is attach which bypasses the need to activate equip. You can free attach an equipment with Galea, Kindler of Hope, Halvar, God of Battle  Flip or Hammer of Nazahn. With Galea only if you cast an equipment from the top of your library, with Halvar only if the equipment is already equipped to another creature you control and with Hammer only if you cast the equipment or the equipment ETB. Free attach has synergy with Suppression Field, but the interaction is limited.

Good luck with your deck.

Buckle up, this will be lengthy....Some important things I always consider when choosing a voltron commander:

1) Does my commander have built in evasion or protection. These are crucial because they require less investment into auras/equipment that protect/grant evasion to your commander, freeing up slots for other cards

2) How hard is it for my commander to reach the holy "power of 7". Ideally you want your commander to reach 7 or more power so you need fewer hits to kill an opponent. Why 7 you ask? Because there is a near step-function difference in success between 4 attacks to kill someone and 3 attacks to kill someone (in my experience).

3) Equipment/aura synergies. Some commanders have built in synergies that make them more ideal for either equipment or aura strategies.

4) Casting cost. If your commander dies, and it will, likely multiple times, can you recast them easily?

4.5) Haste. I put this one as part of #4 because if I am playing a high cmc voltron commander, they better have haste so I can immediately try to kill someone.

With those ideas in mind, here are some voltron options that I like:

Azorius:

Dragonlord Ojutai, my personal commander. Has built in evasion, protection, and card advantage. Moderate CMC and hits like a truck (5 starting power)

Bruna, Light of Alabaster, one of the top aura commanders out there. Has built in evasion, but her high cmc and no native protection makes her a lighting rod for removal. If you can have her survive until she attacks, it's basically game over.

Boros:

Aurelia, the Warleader, arguably one of the strongest voltron commanders out there. Has built in haste and evasion. Her extra combat ability makes here very deadly and can kill someone out of nowhere. Her high cmc makes her a little more of a challenge to pilot though. Goes infinite with Helm of the Host.

Akiri, Fearless Voyager, another top voltron commander. She has built in protection and card advantage in Boros which is a major plus. She has low cmc, but is pretty small and has no evasion meaning she needs extra help to kill someone.

Akiri, Line-Slinger + anyone (blue is nice for protection): Hands down the strongest "fair" voltron commander out there. Costs a low, low 2 mana, has first strike making her a headache to block, and her passive pump ability makes her able to kill at least one person before they are even set up.

Bruenor Battlehammer: Kind of an overlooked one from AFR, but this guy slaps. He has moderate cmc, can freely equip one equipment per turn, and has the Akiri pump ability. No evasion though.

Rakdos:

Kediss, Emberclaw Familiar + Sengir, the Dark Baron: I don't actually think this one is very good. I just think the chance to oneshot the entire table with these two is hilarious (something I was able to do in the Commander Legends draft format).

3+ colors:

Zurgo Helmsmasher: Has haste, built in protection, and already starts at 7 power. No built in evasion, but he can grow in size all on his own. His color wedge is also great for tutoring, removal, and protection.

Galea, Kindler of Hope: Haven't had much experience with this new one, but her free aura attach ability, moderate cmc, and card advantage by playing auras off the top of your library seems pretty strong.

Mono white:

Halvar, God of Battle  Flip: Can freely equip himself and has double strike to kill people off quickly. No evasion or inherent protection is rough though.

Ardenn, Intrepid Archeologist + anyone (I like Rograkh, Son of Rohgahh or Akiri, Line-Slinger): This guy isn't really going to be killing anyone himself, but his ability will save you a ton of mana on equip costs which allows you to keep up mana for interaction or protection.

Mono green:

Thrun, the Last Troll: Mono green isn't as strong as white for equipment, but it can do aura's surprisingly well. Being uncounterable, having OG hexproof, and being able to regenerate himself makes Thrun very tough to kill.

Mono red:

Godo, Bandit Warlord: I have to mention this one since he is the only true cEDH voltron commander.
