Flamekin Herald

Creature — Elemental Wizard

Commander spells you cast have cascade. (Whenever you cast a commander, exile cards from the top of your library until you exile a nonland card with lesser converted mana cost. You may cast it without paying its mana cost. Put the exiled cards on the bottom of your library in a random order.)

I really like your deck, hope you still work at it.

Is Keeper of the Accord the right card for this deck? There are chance that you spend 4 mana for a vanilla 3/4; and you need more than 3 basic plain for make it a ramp. I prefere Solemn Simulacrum over him. I don't really like Smothering Abomination, even if it seems make you draw cards. You can cut out Elenda, the Dusk Rose as well, 4 mana and for two 1/1 creature if you are unlucky.

From your Maybe list I like Bitterblossom, Deadly Dispute, Dusk / Dawn. Can Moon-Blessed Cleric be one more tutor for Anointed Procession? Do you ever considerate Goblin Sharpshooter? I'd like try it with Teysa Karlov. Speaking of goblins: Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker, Siege-Gang Commander but maybe they are for another kind of deck. Does Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker works with Flamekin Herald? Remainder text for Apex Devastator says: "Multiple instances of cascade each trigger separately", so maybe yes, you can double cascade your sorcery commander. For sure it doesn't work with Academy Rector. Purphoros, God of the Forge maybe is to much strong and turn all your opponent against you.

Eli4JHawks11 Sure. I had put off writing the primer to make sure the deck was working the way I wanted it, then I just kinda didn't get around to it. A problem is that, to type everything out, it feels like locking it in and I have to have more reason to change something than that it just feels right.

Until I get around to it, here is a basic run down of how to pilot the deck:

  • Turn one is almost always Mountain plus Ragavan. The times you might not do this are if you and to set up Hero's Blade or Door of Destinies (name pirates, then dash Ragavan every turn) first.

  • Some situations make dashing every turn a good idea. Confusion in the Ranks being on the board is one of those situations. It's really down to what you are up against.

  • Confusion in the Ranks with Liquimetal Torque lets you steal any nonland after making an artifact token.

  • The big combo behind the scenes is Flamekin Herald plus casting Ragavan to cascade into Glimpse of Tomorrow. This should be done with a field full of tokens and other things to maximize value. If one of the cards you put into play is Confusion in the Ranks, its going to get a little weird. If you want to keep it simple, have all the things of each type swap with the same target. When the first one swaps, the rest targetting the same card fizzle so you won't swap those. There is a chance of landing one of the game ender combos, but if that doesn't happen, at least things got exciting. Also, note that you keep stuff you stolen from your opponents when you cast Glimpse of Tomorrow and they lose anything of yours they might have.

  • Game ending combos are Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker and either Port Razer or Coercive Recruiter, Magda, Brazen Outlaw with Maskwood Nexus (if it doesn't win immediately, it sets you up to win quickly), or Hellkite Tyrant and enough artifacts.

  • Ragavan should be doing voltron stuff for most of the game. Not very complicated.

So, in summary, play like it's voltron, steal stuff with Ragavan and other things, and if combos happen, they happen. I handed the deck to a beginner once and he did fine. Knowing all the small little interactions isn't going to make or break the deck.

I had another deck concept this morning: Use the cascade from Flamekin Herald to cast Resurgent Belief for a big pile of enchantments. I'm looking for some direction to go forward with this idea. Budget isn't a serious concern, but it should match the competitiveness. I don't want to put a $300 card in a casual jank deck. Similarly, I tend to play toward the lower end of the competitive EDH scale. I like to win, but I like to mess with the game and try new things just as much. Uniqueness is more important than victory, as long as victory is possible.

Right now, I see two ways to design this thing. First is straight enchantment combo, something like Havoc Festival + Wound Reflection that just wins the game. Second is Voltron, using something like Eldrazi Conscription and Rage Reflection .

I'm also not sure where to go with the commander. I'm looking hard at a partner set. Sets that support the Voltron line are Kediss, Emberclaw Familiar + something , or Bruse Tarl, Boorish Herder + pretty much anything at MV 2. Akiri, Line-Slinger is on color and MV 2 for the cascade, but the ability doesn't offer much. So basically, I need a partner set that includes:

  • a very cheap (MV 2) option
  • + color identity
  • something that reasonably interacts with enchantments or Voltron

The commander consideration is also related to how the enchantments are getting into the graveyard in the first place. There aren't any huge, game winning enchantments with cycling. Wheels give away free cards in this setup. Self-mill might be the way to go.

Also, if anyone has any specific card suggestions to help the core concept, please throw them in, too. This deck is more or less a Living End variant for enchantments in EDH.

abby315 I see now after you mentioned it there are a few more cut to make. I added a few of your suggestions, which were good by the way. I like Command Beacon as another option to keep him safe. Plus Flamekin Herald see fun but would be hard to play if I drew it later. So in my search I found Loyal Unicorn which is nice.

Bastion Protector is great to play early to make sure Velomechus sticks around, plus pumps him in case you need that. You'll probably want a Command Beacon since Velo is so hard to re-cast with the command tax. Flamekin Herald could also be fun - more free spells with Velo!

Waves of Aggression is another extra-combat spell you can cast for free, plus you can cast it again later.

Possible cuts: Strionic Resonator (bit win-more)
Leave No Trace - pretty specific, is this hating on a certain deck?
Lightning Phoenix
Elixir of Immortality
Lithoform Engine

This is my new Ragavan, Nimble Pilferer deck with a focus on accumulating tokens and using Flamekin Herald to cascade into Glimpse of Tomorrow . I'd like help making this deck the best it can be, so suggestions are welcome.
