First-Sphere Gargantua

Creature — Phyrexian Horror

When First-Sphere Gargantua enters the battlefield, you draw a card and you lose 1 life.

Unearth (: Return this card from your graveyard to the battlefield. It gains haste. Exile it at the beginning of the next end step or if it would leave the battlefield. Unearth only as a sorcery.)

Dazard If you cast Undying Malice on Syr Konrad, the Grim, and Syr Konrad dies that turn, none of his abilities will trigger. Creatures don't trigger their own "another creature" abilities, and he won't be on the battlefield to let any other ability trigger. He will come back to the battlefield, though.

If you cast Undying Malice on First-Sphere Gargantua, and Gargantua dies with Syr Konrad in play, Syr Konrad would trigger for a creature dying and for a creature leaving the graveyard, Gargantua gets a +1/+1 counter, and you haven't used its Unearth ability, so it can still self-reanimate, on top of drawing another card.

Thanks for posting, IHATENAMES. Hunted Horror could be feasible if we get the Filth+Evil Presence combo up and running, otherwise those two 3/3’s with protection from black make me nervous in a mono colored deck.

I had considered Gurmag Angler but it’s a no go; the pricey Delve cost means an early game play isn’t viable, as we’d likely have to exile Filth to pay for it which is not good. First-Sphere Gargantua is too costly and without a lot of ramp or fast mana it’ll likely never see play. Getting it into the graveyard for the Unearth cost is doable, but I don’t think it’s worth cutting anything for. Soul Spike is intriguing, I had not seen that card before. That one might be good sideboard material. Thanks for the suggestions!

Yooooo the Skyshroud Cutter tech is ingenious.

I tried to make Wretched Gryff work in BU but my iteration needed way too much set up to get going. I thought of making use of Unearth creatures like First-Sphere Gargantua by effectively getting out a beefy boi I can swing relatively early with before saccing them for the gryff. But again, I gotta mill or discard the Gargantua first if I wanna get him out before turn 6, and that might give my opponent too much time to just kill me before that gets going.

Skyshroud Cutter basically cuts the middle man out and just does his thing, which I appreciate more.

Mortlocke on New hubs to be added

Hello legendofa,

I propose a new hub to be added: Phyrexian. During Modern Horizons 2, 225 creatures were retconned into having the Phyrexian creature subtype to join Vorinclex, Monstrous Raider . Additionally, there were a smattering of Enchantments, Artifacts and etc that ether have the Phyrexian subtype or create creature tokens that do. Thanks to this retcon I now have a deck that has a Phyrexian tribal theme. For your reference, below is a full list of spells that were affected by WotC's Phyrexian errata.

I actually didn't think about having a Soulherder variant. It would probably make thing more consistent than having to rely on Ephemerate and Astral Drift. I'll probably play around with an Esper version of this deck somewhere in the future then.

My only concern with Street Wraith is it's price. In dollars it's very cheap. However, in reais(Brazilian currency) this card isn't that budget. Which is kinda of a concern because Canyon Slough isn't that budget either. Still, I can't deny that the Wraith would be pretty good in this deck.

The only reason I'm not running Viscera Dragger is because it doesn't do enough. It's actually pretty interesting that it can trigger the Drift and has Unearth itself, but it has no utilitiy besides that. Extractor Demon is pretty big and has evasion. First-Sphere Gargantua is also pretty big while providing card draw. Rotting Rats helps to fill the graveyard and can work as disruption. Compared to them, the Dragger doesn't seem that useful. Still, I can see an argument to include it given its double duty.

Thanks Daveslab2022, I've definitely always considered myself a Johnny at heart. It feels suuuuper sweet to unearth a First-Sphere Gargantua and get in a big swing, then emerge an It of the Horrid Swarm from it for one, and I get to jam all those enchantments on them both times!

At first I was just thinking about I could I do to not just use Unearth straight, as you said. However, I slowly started to think about Ephemerate and it seems like a great ideia! I wouldn't even change the core ideia of the deck.

Right now, I'm thinking about losing some of the raw power by cutting things like Hell's Thunder and Sedraxis Specter and maybe go the more controlling side, with things like Rotting Rats for hand control, Extractor Demon as maybe a one or two of since unearth kinda combos with his ability to mill which could allow me to fuel my graveyard, First-Sphere Gargantua for repeatable card draw, Grixis Slavedriver for token generation and, of course, Anathemancer , altough the later I think is more suitable for the sideboard.

Throughout the day I'll be thinking about how to make a Mardu overhaul to this deck.

Thanks for the awesome tips, Funkydiscogod!
