Tur on Challenging Maarika

I believe that you're committing too much to your theme. There are too many cards which do the same thing. You should cut down on the instant/sorcery fight cards to maybe 5-6 cards (that is ~10% of the deck):

I suggest choosing some from these cards: Bite Down, Bushwhack, Cartouche of Strength, Chandra's Ignition, Fall of the Hammer, Go for Blood, Master's Rebuke, Nature's Way, Prey Upon, Prizefight, Tail Swipe, Ulvenwald Tracker

In my opinion, the best ones are: Bushwhack, Cartouche of Strength, Chandra's Ignition, Nature's Way, Prey Upon, Prizefight, Tail Swipe

Fight on a stick should be considered: Gruul Ragebeast or Kogla, the Titan Ape

Deathtouch to this theme is nice, but you're going to be doing 7 damage upon each fight. It's unlikely a creature will survive that fight. Therefore, you can cut back on deathtouch, that is Archetype of Finality, Bow of Nylea, Vorpal Sword, and Falthis, Shadowcat Familiar. Basilisk Collar is still good because of the lifelink. Saryth, the Viper's Fang is still good because of hexproof.

Furthermore, I would cut cards which deal damage based on how much Maarika receives. It will mostly be 3-5 damage. Such as, Fiendlash.

Because the commander is Voltron it needs many keyword abilities: haste, trample, and hexproof should be your bread and butter (no shroud for this deck). Enchantments or equipment which yield those keyword abilities are great.

There are a few Voltron related cards which I would suggest: Fiery Emancipation, Jeska, Thrice Reborn, and Hatred can one shot an opponent.

I hope this helps!

I want a partner that works well with commanders that want to attack. Falthis, Shadowcat Familiar and Anara, Wolvid Familiar are the kinds of partners I have in mind.

Tokezu, Frontline Shinobi

Legendary Creature - Human Ninja

First strike

Ninjutsu

Partner

Other commanders you control have Myriad. If you would sacrifice another commander due to the Legend rule, you may instead return it to your hand. It gains Ninjutsu until end of turn, and its Ninjutsu cost is equal to its mana value.

3 / 3

The schenanegans you can get up to with this card... here's the idea: Your other commander attacks Player A, along with one or two non-legendary creatures, for instance. Maybe you also have a non-legend attacking Player B. That commander becomes Myriad, which means you make token copies of it that attack all players. Legend rule means you sacrifice two of them, so if you sac the nontoken one (attacking player A) and the one attacking player B, you now have your other commander as a token attacking player C, with the original commander now in your hand with Ninjutsu = its mana value. You now can threaten to put it back onto the battlefield with its newfound Ninjustu ability, replacing any of your attacking creatures, so it can come in and surprise damage any player. You get extra mileage from its ETB effect, or guarantee a trigger from a damaging a player. Or you can wait until the token damages a player, and then Ninjutsu it in after damage, before the token goes away. The point is, you gain so much ninja unpredictability, and it really lends itself to commander damage-focused partners.

Love this list, I'm definitely going to try it out! I'm curious as to if you've considered playing Kediss, Emberclaw Familiar? It seems to me like the lifegain that nets would be unreal! (I think Falthis, Shadowcat Familiar is another interesting option, since Menace, Deathtouch, and First Strike is a real headache combination of keywords.)

Replace Falthis, Shadowcat Familiar, your commander already has deathtouch so it is just a vanilla 3 mana 2/2.

so the first thing i think you should do is add some ritual spells like Dark Ritual and Jeska's Will dark ritual will give you 4 black mana for free and jeskas will will give you an 20 cards you can cast from exile and a whole ton of mana, tutors will also give you card advantage when you really need it, one of my personal favorites thats more budget is Grim Tutor, but if you want to break the bank or use proxies (ew) Demonic Tutor is your best bet. as far as lands go, Grixis Panorama is a really stellar card in tandem with cards like Smoldering Marsh because its a mountian and a swamp, you can search for that when you crack the panorama, other examples include but are not limited to, Sunken Hollow Watery Grave Blood Crypt Steam Vents and the original true dual lands, which are too expensive to really even mention. i would personally trade out Dogged Pursuit for something like Exquisite Blood and also consider putting in some boardwipes like Toxic Deluge and alternate wincons such as Exsanguinate take the Ancient Carp out of the deck too, it has no flavor text and dosent contribute anything for the 5 mana youre paying for it. Aetherflux Reservoir is a great card in any storm deck, because youre gonna gain an incredible amount of life with all the spells youre casting. make sure you put more counterspells in, such as Counterspell and if you want something really fun, try Counterbalance, its one of my personal favorite cards and i run it in almost all my blue decks. Take out Dwindle for something like Imprisoned in the Moon and you can cast it on someones commander and they can no longer play their commander as it is now a land :) take out the Falthis, Shadowcat Familiar and replace it with something like a Niv-Mizzet, Parun for some more card draw and board threats, and make sure that at the end of the game your having fun my dude, at the end of the day winning is important but having fun is even more important. Welcome to EDH!

Renegh, Stalwart General

Some fun pairings:

  • Anara, Wolvid Familiar to give them both melee, vigilance and indestructible on your turn. In Naya, there are a lot of ways to make this very useful.
  • Bruse Tarl, Boorish Herder because of the double strike and lifelink, the melee is going to net you a huge return. A 4/4 Renegh, when you attack all three opponents, becomes a 7/7. That's 14 combat damage and 14 life. And with vigilance, there is no reason to not attack at all times.
  • Esior, Wardwing Familiar will make it harder to interact with your two Commanders. This gives you great protection while offering you solid combat in both the attacking and blocking phases. All around, great flexibility within Jeskai.
  • Falthis, Shadowcat Familiar will allow you to apply the pressure only in the way Mardu can.
  • Kamahl, Heart of Krosa is a bit costly, but the benefits are pretty huge. A 4/4 Renegh becomes a 7/7 with melee and a further 10/10 with Kamahl. With the trample and vigilance, you can easily knock an opponent out of the game quickly. Realizing that Kamahl also would benefit from the melee, vigilance, +3/+3 and trample, you'd be looking at a 5/5 into an 8/8 into an 11/11. So you'd be swinging with a 10/10 and an 11/11. Now yes, it is true that each of these Commanders track their own damage separately, but realize this is still a 2-turn clock regardless. If they both connect for the full amount, that's 21 damage. One more hit is 42 and game. Likewise, you can swing at one opponent with a 10/10 and one with an 11/11. This is still a 2-turn clock with connecting for 20 and 22 damage the next turn. All you need is to bump Renegh a little more and she hits for lethal. You can literally take two opponents down in 2 turns, and the final opponent down in another 2 turns, just with these two Commanders alone.
