Emberwilde Captain

Creature — Djinn Pirate

When Emberwilde Captain enters the battlefield, you become the monarch.

Whenever an opponent attacks you while you're the monarch, Emberwild Captain deals damage to that player equal to the number of cards in their hand.

The other thing I'm noticing now that I take a closer look is you're very light on card draw. You only have 5 cards that draw right now including 2x that are just a 1 time use (Jeska's/Fable).

Breena, the Demagogue, Karazikar, the Eye Tyrant, Emberwilde Captain, Tocasia's Welcome, Skullclamp, Chivalric Alliance, and Plumb the Forbidden are all solid options here that won't break the bank.

Phyrexian Reclamation would be a great way to repeatably get Kardur back and avoid commander tax.

Try Plumb the Forbidden in Read the Bones slot. Just sac'ing Kardur nets you the same 2 cards but the ceiling is much higher and it's a sort of anti boardwipe tech that keeps your grip full afterwards.

Pain Magnification can be triggered by you or your opponents (just not against you). This card could be bonkers here. I think of it as a "curse all opponents" effect.

Emberwilde Captain is good card draw here, deters attacks when you can't goad, and the monarchy is easy to hold if you goad consistently.

Karazikar, the Eye Tyrant is admittedly a bit group huggy, but it is an excellent source of card draw that goads.

Bothersome Quasit will turn the chaos up to 11 if you can consistently goad.

Vengeful Ancestor is another fun card in goad decks. It's especially punishing against go-wide strategies.

Anyways, I hope that helps. I ran Marisi for goad personally but am familiar with the archtype. The deck looks good.

Price of Progress and Blood Moon will hate on good mana bases (assuming the 36 basics is accurate and not just a lazy placeholder... I've been there lol). Blood Moon can definitely cause some saltiness though.

Archfiend of Depravity will screw go-wide creature strategies. Tainted AEther is another card that punishes creature strategies. Feed the Swarm and Chaos Warp are your only 2 answers to enchantments in these colors. Oubliette is another premium piece of removal (use on commanders for maximum effect).

Vicious Shadows, Emberwilde Captain, and Unquenchable Fury will hate on large hands. I'm not sure I like the Black Vice effects (or at least so many of them).

Exsanguinate would be a nice finisher here.

You are a bit light on creatures. Koskun Falls can be hard to find if you aren't shopping online but it does provide some defense.

Last One Standing and Blasphemous Act are a pair of good budget friendly boardwipes here.

Do you think cards like Emberwilde Captain, Leyline of Combustion, or Agitator Ant would help to deflect attention? The creatures wouldn't survive your boardwipes, but they're another layer of protection.

I think one easy swap that you could make that also potentially helps with the dilemma of adding in Chivalric Alliance is swapping either Eiganjo, Seat of the Empire or a basic Plains for Minas Tirith.

I've been okay so far at 35 lands. I can understand running Mass Hysteria for the mana efficiency, but giving your opponents' creatures haste runs the risk of benefiting other aggro strats, and activated tap abilities. Rising of the Day gives 17 of your 29 total creatures (including Isshin) that little additional buff.

My quick suggestions for cuts or swaps:

  • Swap either Brave the Sands or Fervent Charge for Flowering of the White Tree. Again, 17 of your 29 creatures get a couple decent buffs, and all your other creatures get a consistent +1/+1. Fervent Charge only buffs when you attack.

  • I think you can cut Revenge of Ravens for similarly stated reasons as Emberwilde Captain. Or, you could flat out swap with Marchesa's Decree if you really want to keep the effect, but still squeeze in another draw opportunity.

  • You can likely cut Vampiric Rites as you were thinking, especially if you end up adding Minas Tirith, which feels like a middle ground to Vampiric Rites & Chivalric Alliance in terms of getting the draw. Idk what land destruction is like in your meta, but Minas Tirith is also a bit more removal resistant.

  • Painful Truths can be a potential cut, or perhaps swap with Professional Face-Breaker. Face-Breaker is a combat damage trigger, but is still something you can benefit from since you want to go wide & hit face anyways.

  • More of a meta call, but you can maybe cut Vandalblast and/or Damn. I've been cutting back on board wipes in my more aggro decks in favor of more targeted removal, draw, or creatures.

  • Inquisitorial Rosette could be another cut. I've personally moved away from this card & Captain's Claws. I think they got phased out for additional creature slots. If you like it as a menace anthem, then Goblin War Drums is also an option. Ultimately up to you though.

I liked your reasoning for cutting Emberwilde Captain and I may even think about taking it out of my deck. I just recently put Karlach in and might replace Emberwild with another Vigilance card.

I like your detailed update Michigone. I had a very similar realization with Emberwilde Captain & some of the other pillow fort effects.

They were clunky in that I wanted them to dissuade attacks at me, but their benefits happened if people attacked me. Often times people I played against would remove either Isshin & tank through standard triggers from the pillow effects, or removed the pillow effect all together.

I may re-examine Neyali, Suns' Vanguard at some point as a potential swap with Professional Face-Breaker. I do like that Face-Breaker is kind of like a Tymna the Weaver, except with treasures & impulse. Neyali's "no time limit" is cool, I just didn't like having my instant speed protection/removal stuck in impulse, & hampering that reactive element.

Drawing in these colors is a balancing act that takes plenty of playing to see what feels right.

My only knock against Helm of the Host is that it's 9 total mana to cast & equip to something.
