Dreamstealer

Creature — Human Wizard

Menace

When Dreamstealer deals combat damage to a player, that player discards that many cards.

Eternalize (, Exile this card from your graveyard: Create a token that's a copy of it, except it's 4/4 black Zombie Human Wizard with no mana cost. Eternalize only as a sorcery.)

Once you get your opponent's hand empty, they're probably going to be drawing and playing one cards a turn, so there's no actual discard for Liliana's Caress. Caress wants your opponent to be discarding a lot, which means your opponent needs to refill their hand once in a while. Since this deck looks like it's trying to get the opponents hand empty, rather than constantly discarding, The Rack or Shrieking Affliction would probably be more reliable. If you want to build around Caress, cards like Dark Deal or Baleful Mastery might help here.

Acquisitions Expert is slightly better than Corrupt Court Official, if you want to keep the creature base the same.

Depending on budget, Liliana of the Veil is more reliable discard than Dreamstealer here, and the Orcish Bowmasters in the maybeboard are a good deterrent for, hmm, pretty much everything. Still $60+ each, though.

Archon_Bel I threw Dreamstealer & Needle Specter in because Breena reliably pumps them up &, even in a vacuum, those 2 cards are such nutkickers when you can reliably pump. I've double triggered Breena onto one of them & had an opponent discarding 5 cards easily, I don't necessarily need any discard synergy to make them worthwhile. Also some of my reanimation pulls cards from my opponents' graveyards as well.

I do the same thing with lifelink, I don't neccessarily rely on lifegain, but lifelinking creatures are one of the better ones to be pumped when you have a reliable engine, so I throw in a bunch of lifelink aggro. Nullpriest of Oblivion is another one I like. One that probably meets halfway between our different strategies is Speaker of the Heavens.

A bunch of the new phyrexian things synergize well, that is the direction I saw the toxic/proliferate Breena deck going.

For me, Felisa, Fang of Silverquill was cut for Ratadrabik of Urborg. I do think guardian scalelord will playtest really well though.

If you end up leaning into the phyrexian build & run with "mites" you probably wouldn't miss Cathars' Crusade anyway :)

My deck is Birdlock, it may have some things that you like for the creature category anyway. Breena decks fascinate me because for whatever reason she is one of the Strixhaven precon commanders that I don't see explored as much. Alot of the decks don't deviate much from the precon build, yet she is so much stronger & more fun as a more aggressive build.

Haha, yeah, I tend pump the agro-helpers more than the voltron to force that decision. Mistmeadow Skulk is a serious badass & since Breena's ability doesn't target, the protection isn't a non-bo. Likewise, Dreamstealer has built in recursion if you need it. Needle Specter becomes an instant threat with one combat instance. Voice of the Blessed becomes jacked easily.

I'm a fan of proliferate since Breena doesn't particularly lend herself to finishing wide as much as going midrange-tall, so usually I only have like maybe 4 creatures that I've truly pumped, then I can proliferate those +1/+1 counters at the very worst... but, the best-case scenario I am quickly ulting planeswalkers with it & pumping some low-cost critter. For a superfriends deck it is unusually agro & creature-dense (31 creatures). I've seen someone on here using proliferate with breena but with the infect/poison angle as a subtheme as well.

The new guardian scalelord will be one to look out for if you want recursion for non-land permanents.. It will be a shoe-in for me since I need ways to bring noncreatures back & you know how easy it is to meet power requirements with Breena

Oh speaking of which, if you end up (partially) reconsidering, Needle Specter & Dreamstealer synergizes well with the counters without irritating the controller. Haven't found a lot of other good scaling creatures in UB, mostly milling related and that's risky with all the GY strategies around

sixteenbiticon A quick update to my last comment - also, do keep in mind this list is tuned to a $100-budget playlist. At my table, there aren't many lists that can do significant damage in the first few turns, and the ones that can usually become the focus of the table to respond to, letting me ramp and drop some of my 3-4 drop creatures without much of an issue. If your table has a higher budget or simply faster decks, you can definitely lower the CMC to speed yourself up and provide yourself some extra cushion early on. Some early creatures I'd suggest for a lower CMC list (that won't destroy your budget):

  • Grim Flayer - Good early blocker that evens out your draws and gets bigger later.

  • Hapatra, Vizier of Poisons - A card I'm always on the precipice of including, a 2-drop that will weaken or kill your opponents early creatures and provide you with deathtouch blockers is extremely good.

  • Mindblade Render - It's a 1/3 that draws you cards for 2 mana. Nothing not to like.

  • Varragoth, Bloodsky Sire - an early deathtouch blocker that can let you tutor for cards if you start getting hits in.

  • Krenko, Tin Street Kingpin - A card that routinely pops up in this list when Varchild gets a bit too pricey for the budget. An early card that can start building up a host of tokens to help you block.

  • Virtus the Veiled - Deathtouch blocker that is absolutely disgusting early in the game. I don't use him specifically because my playgroup already hates me enough for playing Spawnwrithe.

  • Dreamstealer - A chump blocker if you drop him for 3, but get that Eternalize off in a post-Thantis field and oh boy.

  • Azra Oddsmaker - Probably the weakest suggestion here, but figured I'd include it anyways. Her trigger is pretty consistent to hit in this list with Thantis out, but she's hit-or-miss before that.

I'd work on lowering your curve a bit. 4x Champion of the Perished would help there, along with maybe adding 2 more Jadar, Ghoulcaller of Nephalia (Which also triggers Champion). Cryptbreaker is another powerful 1 drop zombie.

Liliana's Reaver is a 4 drop that relies on pushing combat damage through to do its thing. 3 copies is definitely too much. Thief of Sanity isn't even a zombie, and it's a 3 drop, why are there 3 of them. Similarly, Dreamstealer isn't even a zombie either and doesn't synergize super well with the deck. Yes it has eternalize but it costs 6 mana so.

Some other good zombies: Diregraf Colossus (synergizes with graveyard subtheme), Lord of the Accursed, Death Baron.

Dark Salvation and Fatal Push are really nice removal spells, which can replace Infernal Grasp. Even with X=0, the former can kill most creatures, and if you have extra mana you can make some zombies too. For the latter, revolt shouldn't be too hard to trigger either with all your zombies running around.

Blackgate on Black Lantern (Tergrid menace/midrange)

Hello droslag, thanks for the feedback! They are both great menace cards thank you! I think both those cards would be great in a zombie menace deck to make the most use of their special abilities. Combine them with Graf Harvest and that would be a good foundation! That being said adding Plague Belcher and Relentless Dead is something I will play test!

I am also considering swapping out Hunted Nightmare for 3 copies of Dreamstealer and swapping out Josu Vess, Lich Knight for Tergrid, God of Fright  Flip to include a discard strategy to the main deck.

also, Dreamstealer could be a good card in control matchups if needed
