Niko9 on Fun Deck/Builds to try

Deckbuilding can be super fun : ) but the weird thing for me, and I don't know if other players get this too, but it's so surprising sometimes what decks I actually like to play. My original EDH deck was a pretty competitive elfball deck for the time because I really like a lot of the cards, but in practice it was awful to play. It was infinite combo win or not do much, and I probably played it for far too long.

After a long time, I've really realized that my favorite decks to brew up and play are ones that have an open-ended approach. I've been in too many EDH games that go turns 1-4 ramp, somebody wraths, and everyone really just starts playing around turn 7. My favorite brew in commander has definitely been Catti-brie of Mithral Hall because I play it as an aggro deck, a low cmc commander and curve, and there is lots of spot removal. I think spot removal is really underrated in commander, just from a fun perspective. Like, I have such a better time looking around and figuring out plays when I have to budget removal rather than sitting there with a wrath in the hand and just waiting to use it.

I don't know, I just find the "meta" commander experience too laid out for you as far as deck design and play. My decks would probably be a ton better if I was doing Sol Ring into more ramp into Farewell into my commander and some combo, but to me the surprise factor of attacking turn 2 is way more fun : )

And fun thing that I've found is that there were a couple players in my group who also made aggro decks, and once you get 2 aggro players it's an entirely different game. Sometimes games might start normal and then people switch decks for game 2 and there are 3 aggro decks and then the person playing Dockside Extortionist and Korvold, Fae-Cursed King is actually so doomed, and I really enjoy that.

Though, to be fair I usually play more 60 card multiplayer jank : )

Profet93 Thank you for the suggestions and kind words!

Carnival of Souls I don't think is a good and for here since I make so many tokens. The lifeless is negligible with Mishra's lifegain, but it's one of those I would probably need to won the turn it came down.

I do agree and like Dockside Extortionist, but not for Black Market Connections. I understand the ramp aspect, but all three modes of Black Market Connections works for this deck. I'd rather find another cut for it. I'd probably have to sit down after work and think about it.

Anger is relatively new because of the mountain aspect. Plus the lack of discard. He's good in general, but he really hasn't shown up a lot as of now. I do agree I probably want a couple more haste options. I have liked Roar of Resistance, but i have tried to add another haste option.

I have playtested the deck since I posted it on here. I just haven't updated the description so it looks like I just built it. What're two other potential options you'd think about taking out for Dockside Extortionist and/or a third haste option (right now Hammer)

Cmi1103 Those are some great comments and suggestions, thanks!

I either missed Anduril, Narsil Reforged or it was a bit out of my budget at the time I first saw it. A copy of it is on the way!

I used to have Thran Vigil, until it hit me that it was only a single +1/+1 counter, no matter how many cards come in and it was only on your turn. I cannot remember what I swapped it out for, but I am unwilling to use it, given its constraints. Had it been one counter per turn, I would still have it.

I will seriously consider Spark Double, so many legendary cards are worth copying, commander included, just gotta figure out what to dump for it.

Ashnod's Altar is in the deck, Goblin Bombardment will go in my thinking pile, free sacs are nice indeed.

I used to have Flayer of the Hatebound in the deck combined with Stalking Vengeance for a double whammy, but I took em out to go another direction.

I also like to walk the dangerous line of not being the one with the most lives, often not blocking attacks to drop my lives to activate dethrone. It's also why I use all those pain talismans. So Gray Merchant of Asphodel is not really an option I am willing to entertain.

Wish I had a Dockside Extortionist!

I stole your Danny Pink and am thinking on your Kardur, Doomscourge as well.

Looking through your decklist, I see you are using Mahadi, Emporium Master, an alternative could be Gadrak, the Crown-Scourge, same CMC, but he flies, does not require the black mana and is 5/4 instead of 3/3, downside is you need 4+ artifacts for him to attack and he will not spawn a treasure when tokens die.

Another interesting free sac outlet is Grimgrin, Corpse-Born, free sacs, adds +1/+1 counters on himself (and untaps!) and kills a target and buffs again when attacking.

Another interesting creature I toyed with that serves as a good defender and gives you perfect control of your life total (on the downside) is Mischievous Poltergeist, stops anything that is not trample or unblockable and survives many kinds of board wipes all while allowing you to drop your life total to the same level as the highest life total at instant speed!

Otherwise, Skullclamp, 1 mana for 2 extra card draws? Sign me up!

Thanks for the comments and the upvote and here is one back from me (I tried, but I get a 404 page when I click the button...)!

Cmi1103 - Thanks for the upvote! Only 9 views and already has a like so that is good :)

Dockside Extortionist has been on my desired list for a while and I will eventually pick it up, it is just difficult as that is a good portion of my monthly card budget for a single card. It would be a great fit in the deck though.

Braids, Arisen Nightmare is an interesting suggestion I would not have thought of for this deck...I see your point that generally speaking I will likely have artifacts to spare compared to others unless they want to lose their Sol Ring, Arcane Signet, or something similar in exchange for keeping me from drawing a card potentially netting me three extra cards per turn...I am not sure I want her in this deck but I have a aristocrat deck with a treasure sub-theme I am working on and I feel like it fits there better...or at least I can try it there and if I love it, it might make its way over!

I did consider Marauding Looter but the discard is something that I generally do not want. The deck does have reanimation abilities but not enough to make me want to toss away creatures and most all the support is pretty good...situational yes, but good!

If you have any other thoughts, keep them coming!

Definitely a game changer! Glad you were able to get a copy! I recently got a Dockside Extortionist and Terror of the Peaks that you had suggested to me a while ago, and I'm lovin it!

I know it's a spendy card, but Dockside Extortionist would work great here, especially if you have a way to bounce him and bring him back a few times.

As far as card draw, if you have a few treasure tokens to spare Braids, Arisen Nightmare could net you some more cards by sacrificing a few treasure tokens. If you're wanting to stick with the pirate theme though, maybe something like Marauding Looter?

Awesome! Few suggestions based on my experience with Marchesa in my deck: The Black Rose Never Dies. Thran Vigil and Anduril, Narsil Reforged are both insanely valuable to this deck so you can get more counters on creatures without always having to rely on Marchesa's Dethrone ability, especially late in the game! Spark Double is also incredible as it can become a copy of Marchesa due to the non-legend effect, to help protect your board state even more!

I'd also look at adding a few more valuable Sac Outlets such as Ashnod's Altar, Goblin Bombardment which are always free options to sacrifice at any time, plus they add extra value. You can never have too many.

A Few fun creatures to abuse etb and ltb that can really turn the game upside down are Flayer of the Hatebound, and Gray Merchant of Asphodel.

Also, Kudos on Hostage Taker! That was one of my favorite cards to run in this deck until I got my hands on Dockside Extortionist.

Marchesa is so fun! Love to hear your thoughts! and let me know if you have any other questions, or looking for suggestions on what to cut or anything like that! Enjoy!

If we're looking for something to swap out for Storm-Kiln Artist, then I'd say take out Simian Spirit Guide. You lose an easy red mana in exchange for relatively easy mana of any colour you need.

If Dockside Extortionist is your go-to, I'd run some bounce or flicker spells. One that comes to mind as one that'll do immense value in that regard is Displacer Kitten, you get Underworld Breach running, and then basically everything you do nets you more treasures to work with. But this is assuming a decently artifact/enchantment heavy board on the enemy side, which I guess is a pretty safe bet in a highly competitive environment.
