Diabolic Vision

Sorcery

Look at the top five cards of your library and put one of them into your hand. Put the remaining four on top of your library in any order.

Epicurus on Ramos, Mutate Engine! Wait, what?

I love the idea, so +1 to that!

A couple notes, though, with regards to your choice of commander.

First, you have a lot of mono-colored spells on the list. In fact, only 15 multicolored spells for the deck, while also having 10 colorless spells. That won't get 5 counters on Ramos very quickly, and the longer he sits the greater the chance he will be removed before he can pop. Ramos is one of those kill-on-site type of commanders.

Pertaining to that, a lot of your Mono-colored spells are in your instants and sorceries - particularly draw spells. And, obviously, your colorless spells are mana producing artifacts. What I would do would be to find multicolored spells that draw cards or produce mana and swap them.

Arixmethes, Slumbering Isle, Faeburrow Elder, and Leyline Prowler are all good multicolored mana producers. And Ilysian Caryatid is mono-colored, but at least puts a counter on Ramos, which a colorless artifact won't (and, on top of that, is just really damn good).

For draw spells, I really like Brokers Charm for Ramos. Some good repeating draw engines are Chulane, Teller of Tales, Aesi, Tyrant of Gyre Strait, Mask of Riddles, Jori En, Ruin Diver. A couple more single use draw spells are Diabolic Vision and Shielding Plax (which doubles as protection for Ramos).

A lot of this will potentially raise your mana curve a bit, so keeping a few of the 2-drop mana rocks wouldn't be bad, and maybe keeping Brainstorm, for example, wouldn't hurt. However, you'll be surprised how much more quickly and repeatedly you can get Ramos up to 5 counters if you include some of the stuff I've listed.

Sorry for the thesis, hahaha. I've just been playing Ramos a lot in the past few years, and I feel like I have a pretty solid understanding of how to play him.

Good luck, and happy gathering!

The fewer mono-colored spells, the better. I feel like you have too many of them in here. If you had more two-colored spells, I'd say add Niv-Mizzet Reborn. However, if you keep it at as many three-colored spells as you have or more, add Meeting of the Five.

A few other cards I can suggest (don't really have it memorized how expensive they are):

Corpsejack Menace

Shielding Plax

Leyline Prowler

Maelstrom Nexus

Diabolic Vision

Brokers Charm

Apex Devastator

On a final note, if you want a five-colored deck to be at all competitive, you'll really need to spend a decent chunk of money on the land. It's pretty much unavoidable. Too many lands that ETB tapped will really put you a lot of turns behind.

Very solid build on a budget and I love the theme! I posted some comments on my Jorn deck page in response to yours. So for here, and focusing on simply card draw and protection, I recommend these cards because they're cheap and have never let me down:

  1. Joint Exploration - its like Growth Spiral and Opt rolled into one
  2. The Cruelty of Gix - because of the new "Read Ahead" mechanic, this thing lets you tutor for any card at the small price of 3 life (typical when you're in the color of Black), and also has graveyard recursion which is what your deck is trying to do.
  3. Diabolic Vision - probably THE best scry/draw card in Dimir colors and runs about $0.50
  4. Expedition Map - tutors for ANY land
  5. Tempt with Discovery - also tutors for ANY land, and usually within a game you'll get +1 or +2 additional lands off this cast
  6. Sunstone - $0.25 card from Ice Age that gives you a Fog effect when you need it
  7. Viridian Revel - great against folks playing treasure-heavy decks, allowing you to draw every time they sac a treasure
  8. Scrying Sheets - a bit out of your budget, being roughly $5-6, but its soooooooo good in Snow decks

Update!

Out: 20 total cards! 1. Time of Ice, 2. Muldrotha, the Gravetide, 3. Iceberg Cancrix, 4. The Tarrasque, 5. Time of Ice, 6. Emergent Ultimatum, 7. Glittering Frost, 8. Boreal Outrider, 9. Faceless Haven, 10. Shimmerdrift Vale, 11. Avalanche Caller, 12. Frostwalk Bastion, 13. Coldsteel Heart, 14. Fabled Passage, 15. Opulent Palace, 16. Tropical Island, 17. Underground Sea, 18. Bayou, 19. Birds of Paradise, 20. Village Rites

In: 20 total cards! 1. Primal Rage, 2. Winged Boots, 3. Darksteel Plate, 4. Panglacial Wurm, 5. Sundial of the Infinite, 6. Diabolic Vision, 7. Inventors' Fair, 8. Thespian's Stage, 9. Boreal Centaur, 10. Hailstorm Valkyrie, 11. Druid Class, 12. Expedition Map, 13. Thing in the Ice  Flip, 14. Glorious Sunrise, and 2x Snow Forest, 3x Snow Island, 1x Snow Swamp

With this new design, we're looking to keep Jorn alive longer and deal more damage. There's also more ways to summon Marit Lage and pump up snow creatures. The mana base is smoothed out with more snow lands, and more card draw / ramp cards. Let me know what you think of the new brew!

Epicurus on Ramos: Getting Pumped

Hello there!

I'll get right down to it. I think you have +1/+1 counter support overkill here, and could use some ramp and draw action. I think that the comment above from Guerric covers a lot of the ramp, but I would also put Mirari's Wake on that list.

For draw, you do certainly have some amount, but I might suggest adding Lim-Dul's Vault and/or Diabolic Vision, Bringer of the Blue Dawn, Chulane, Teller of Tales and Garruk's Uprising. These choices are specifically good for your deck here, though obviously there are also the staples like Rhystic Study, and a slew of others. Being a 5-color deck, you could really choose anything.

And finally, I personally feel like Sage of Hours is too good not to include in any +1/+1 counter deck. And also, Doubling Season, if you can afford it.

Cheers!

I appreciate the creativity, and there are certainly a few suggestions I could present. But first, I think it is most important to address your choice of Commander.

Niv-Mizzet Reborn is absolutely not the right Commander for this deck. And I don't mean to say that all 5-color Dragon tribal decks should have The Ur-Dragon at the helm (though, that would be a great choice, just sayin'). My reason is simple: you don't have enough color pair cards on the list for 'Ol Nivvy to be useful. Like, at all. Even as part of the 99.

Now, you could fix that by adding spells such as Terminate, Abrupt Decay, Diabolic Vision, Faeburrow Elder, Render Silent, Anguished Unmaking, etc etc etc... Not to mention that you only have 8 color pair dragons in the deck, and 5 of them are Gruul (meaning, first of all, that the most amount of dragons you could snatch with Niv would be 3 and the chances of doing so are astronomical, and secondly that if you revealed 3 or more dragons by some dumb luck they're more likely to all be Gruul than any other combination, meaning you'd only get to keep one).

The thing is, you'd have to add a helluva lot of cards to make Niv palatable for this deck, and that would mean basically overhauling the entire deck. A much easier task would be to just simply change the commander.

As for general suggestions, I think you can use some Haste enablers. Dragon Tempest, Temur Ascendancy, Dragonlord Kolaghan and Sarkhan Vol come readily to mind, but there are a ton of other choices, such as Rhythm of the Wild, Fires of Yavimaya and Samut, Tyrant Smasher.

As for your question about better low-mana dragons, understand that there really aren't many good ones below MV4. I mean, they're dragons. What do you expect? However, here's a few of the better ones that aren't an arm and a leg:

Again, if you're going for a genuinely low curve dragon deck, you're going to be disappointed. It just really can't be done.

And finally, Lathliss, Dragon Queen is quite upset that she wasn't included.

That's all I got.

Cheers!

Hey, you've made some big changes here. You need to add four cards to make 100 consider these?

  • Frantic Search: loot a 6 CMC plus creature and then use the untap lands to cast Runo.
  • Vile Entomber: potentially repeatable Entomb.
  • Lim-Dul's Vault arrange 5 cards deep and you have many chances to choose the 5 cards you want to keep.
  • Diabolic Vision: arrange 5 cards deep and you get to put a card of them into your hand.

These all help to setup Runo to transform. Vile Entomber has deathtouch to help it to attack/copied or simply be a deadly blocker afterwards. Having a potentially repeatable Entomb is good for reanimation and Wonder. The first time it attacks/copied get Wonder while in combat.

Both the creature looters here die to Heartless Summoning, but Obsessive Stitcher is a looter who doesn't and can also be an instant reanimation source.
