Would you consider either Rhystic Study or Smothering Tithe? Would you be willing to spend 2 more mana to replace Grand Abolisher with Myrel, Shield of Argive or 1 more mana to replace Despark with Anguished Unmaking, or is keeping a low mana curve a high priority for this deck?

Possible answers, non-exhaustive and in no particular order:

Exiling: Shattering Blow, Cast into the Fire, Tear Asunder, Resculpt, Anguished Unmaking, Despark, Prismatic Ending, Rite of Oblivion

Countering and discard, the usual array

Draw prevention and punishment: Narset, Parter of Veils, Maralen of the Mornsong, Spirit of the Labyrinth, Orcish Bowmasters, Sheoldred, the Apocalypse

Most of these are sideboard material at best, but some are general enough to hold up in a fringe deck, or specific enough to be in most sideboards. (What an insightful comment. Some of the possible answers are bad, some are okay, and some are pretty good. Watch out, analysts, here I come.)

So I would say that if The One Ring takes over, Esper Control might wander back into the upper ranks (while using The Ring itself), Burn and Hammer just kind of ignore it and work around the turn of protection, and Raggy-Reggie-Ragey decks might slip a little bit.

I haven't faced or used The One Ring in action yet, so this is me eyeballing and speculating, but I'm leaning toward not banworthy. The One Ring is two-thirds of a control deck in a single card, with the protection and draw, but control could use a hand. And it looks like Omnath is already locking it in. Which will get banned first, The One Ring or Omnath-4? It'll fill in a few more decks, maybe become the centerpiece of its own deck with Voltaic Key turbo-draw or Escape Protocol perma-protection, but it's not going to explode Modern unless something happens in Caves of Ixalan or whatever.

And if I'm wrong, it's another card for my banlist-only deck, so there.

You cant use the thick version of Atarka in the deck. It’s printed on thicker cardboard and is thus easy to notice where in the deck it is by looking at the deck. I assume this is a commander deck due to its 100-card count and singleton nature. Who is the commander? This is looking like a good start, but you might want to include cards like Despark and Terminate to deal with enemy permanents. Also some dragons with lower mana costs.

Yeah Orzhov really has some awesome versatility and options in regards to removal.

I think the 3/3 blocker is mostly non-consequential, since it is just a vanilla creature. The majority of the time I'd rather that my opponent have a 3/3 vanilla creature than whatever threatening value permanent that was removed. In the majority of my play experiences, the 3/3 token usually dies while blocking or gets caught up in a board wipe.

The additional upside for Generous Gift/Beast Within is that they can hit lands. I know (mass) land destruction is considered taboo by some players, but sometimes you might run into stuff like Maze of Ith, Glacial Chasm, or some other powerful utility land that might not otherwise have much removal to deal with it.

Despark is cool, especially if you play in a meta with lots of +4MV permanents.

Yeah, I hate cutting removal in general. I never wanna cut "fun" stuff, though. It's a struggle. lol

My thought process was that it was 3MV and that it offered a blocker to an opponent. You're totally right about Feed the Swarm, though. I'll swap in Fracture for now.

As I looked through to find Fracture, I also found Despark, which I forgot existed. lol Adding that one to the maybeboard as well.

Thanks!

Howdy again JosephStardust:

I think you misunderstand, I would never tell you not to use Anguished Unmaking over Despark: however, I would definitely imply that you should swap it for Fracture. Most of the threatening stuff you will need to remove is over 4 CMC anyway, and while there SOME exceptions depending on your meta, you have plenty of other removal at your disposal to hit other targets anyway if it really is below 4 cmc.

I believe though that this is where our playstyles differ: I don't like cards like the well or archive because I consider them to be "Win more" cards. It basically requires your entire deck to do what it needs to do before it just kinda sits there. If you have no mana to dump into it or youre not gaining life, then the Well is nothing, and while Archive will certainly help you gain more life, I don't see enough extra card draw for that second ability is be as helpful as you want. If you are looking for replacements to help draw and gain life, I would recommend swapping in Twilight Prophet, and Dark Confidant (while its cheap) or Sigarda's Splendor. I feel that the combination of lifegain and card draw will allow your Karlov deck to utilize its counters for removal since you are not always desperate to dump it into the well. Allowing yourself to utilize Karlov even more won't hurt anything either.

I have always found Karlov to be a reliable source of removal since I usually have enough mana to always get his ability off once or twice during a rotation of the table. Again, I understand that my suggestions may break flavor or your playstyle, but I highly encourage you to try them.
