Delina, Wild Mage

Legendary Creature — Elf Shaman

Whenever this attacks, choose target creature you control, then roll a twenty sided die. (Remember that MTG spindowns are not well weight balanced, so please roll a die that isn't an MTG spindown)

If you roll a 1-14 | Create a tapped and attacking token that's a copy of that creature, except it's not legendary and it has "Exile this creature at the end of combat."
If you roll 15-20 | Create one of those tokens, then you may roll again.

Crow_Umbra on Isshin Semi-budget

No prob, happy to help! Do you have a general budget per card? I wanted to make sure that the stuff I recommended generally stuck within the budget the rest of the list seemed to have. Is there anything you have in mind for the type of effect you were looking for the 4 drop?

I'm generally a fan of keeping the curve trim for Isshin. I think most of what the deck wants tends to be mostly in the 2-4 cmc range. A few different 4 drop options:

  • Bronzebeak Foragers - Basically a Grasp of Fate on a body that can be copied by Delina, Wild Mage

  • Firemane Commando - Also complimentary to Breena & rewards you for attacking around the table.

  • Mishra, Claimed by Gix  Meld - I wouldn't even bother with the Meld aspect. Mishra can be a pretty solid finisher option for group slug shenanigans.

  • Nelly Borca, Impulsive Accuser - Newer tech from MKC. Can compliment the Breena you have in your 99 & be another draw source.

  • Ogre Battledriver - Another haste anthem can be helpful for an aggro deck. The other benefit is getting that +2/+0 power buff for when creatures ETB, so it can definitely add a bit more punch to your tokens that ETB tapped & attacking.

king-saproling Thank you for the recommendation. I have added it to the Maybe list, since to my understanding the copy would not trigger off any dwarves that attacked with Delina, Wild Mage. So would only double token in my second main phase. While this is possible it is not guaranteed. Since I would need another way to tap the dwarves on the field.

Delina, Wild Mage could be worth it for the double Magda

No prob Dangerwillrobinson79, I misread someone's land count as 38 instead of 33 earlier today lol.

Things can definitely get funky once Delina, Wild Mage starts making non-legendary token copies of things.

Glancing through your cards, your deck's problem might be because you're building it based on best-case scenario, with tons of clones and blink synergies. (In my playgroup, Miirym always gets removed before her untap step, so the Miirym player does not rely on her sticking to the board.)

I'll suggest some upgrades for your deck based on making it more consistent and less dependant on Miirym:

1st. Ramp

Explosive turns with lots of cost reducers sound nice... if people don't blow up your dorks before you get any value from them.

2nd. You need more lands (36 lands + 13 ramp cards is a good starting point)

3rd. Better counterspells

4th. Better removal

5th. Better boardwipes

6th. More card draw

7th. Better win conditions

The recent Aurelia Multiverse Legends reprint is such a huge benefit to budget decks. I know your overall budget is $75, but do you have a budget per card? I have a few suggestions within budget that I think could push your deck a little more without breaking the bank:

  • I think you can probably cut Heiko Yamazaki, the General and Raiyuu, Storm's Edge you currently have 5 Warriors & 3 Samurai in deck. From playing Isshin extensively this past year, you definitely want to be attacking with more than one creature per combat haha. Solo attacking usually only happens in early game or after recovering from board wipes.

  • Since you already have Duke Ulder Ravengard and Hammers of Moradin, you could lean a bit more into Myriad. Hammers of Moradin is one of my favorite cards in my list, and usually punches above its weight. Some other Myriad creatures you could include are Genasi Enforcers and Elturel Survivors.

  • To pair with Myriad and your creature token production in general, I'd recommend getting in some ETB damage effects like Corpse Knight, Impact Tremors, and/or Witty Roastmaster. This helps get some damage in "around" defenses, and softens up opponents even further for when your creatures connect.

  • I think Delina, Wild Mage could be an eventual swap/upgrade to Flamerush Rider. Yes, you can Dash out the Rider, but the copies that Delina makes are not Legendary, which can have a higher ceiling on doubling up those triggers you typically wouldn't be able to.

  • Karlach, Fury of Avernus could be a budget-ish (less than $10) swap for Raiyuu if you want another extra combat effect. Karlach doesn't even need to attack, she just checks if you are attacking.

  • Breena, the Demagogue or Karazikar, the Eye Tyrant could be potential swaps with Glint-Sleeve Siphoner. Both are a blast, and add some fun political wrinkles to games while helping you (and opponents) draw cards. They're high risk/high reward. Breena can help grow herself or your other threats, and Karazikar can help deflect aggro away with Goad.

  • Lastly, I'd recommend Gruesome Realization as a swap for Faithless Looting. Yes, Looting is cheap & has Flashback, but it isn't super helpful in this deck since you're not utilizing your graveyard as a resource. Gruesome Realization has helped me cut down other opposing creature token boards in a few games, or drawn me cards if I wasn't playing against those types of strats.

I hope these suggestions are helpful. Overall your deck has decent synergy, but I think a handful of the suggested swaps can get it a bit more honed in. Hope you have fun with Isshin, he's a blast.

Crow_Umbra on Isshin

Nice take on Isshin, and welcome to TappedOut!

Although your primer says tokens, I'm noticing you only have about 4 token producers, plus Anointed Procession. I think that if you plan to go more token focused, you should have a higher volume of creature token production. I'm currently running an Isshin deck that is very token oriented with elements of ETB damage from things like Impact Tremors or group slug from Hellrider. It's a super fun build that I've enjoyed for the past year. Instead of writing out a super lengthy set of suggestions for that type of build I can link my deck if you're interested; it has a detailed primer discussing the build and card choices.

All that being said, your deck currently looks a bit more like a Legends Matter themed build. If you want to go more that route of Legends Matter, you could include some of the following:

  • Braids, Arisen Nightmare - A cool draw piece that pairs well with token and aristocrats strategies, & can work in conjunction with Cadric, Ratadrabik, and Hofri.

  • Cadric, Soul Kindler

  • Delina, Wild Mage - She can create non-Legendary token copies of Legendary creatures. If you roll 15-20, those tokens stick around, which can let you stack some gnarly effects from your legends that you wouldn't be able to otherwise.

  • Ratadrabik of Urborg - Kinda fits both a Legends Matter and the token subtheme you are trying to go for.

  • Shanid, Sleepers' Scourge - Could also be swapped as the commander for this deck if you want to do more Legends Matter. He could also be a decent draw engine in the 99 of your current build, since about 17 of your creatures are Legends, plus the 2 Background enchantments.

  • Hofri Ghostforge

  • Karazikar, the Eye Tyrant - Great draw and control piece for an Isshin deck, and also fits the politics subtheme you're going for. A solid inclusion for pretty much any Isshin variant.

Rhadamanthus on Interaction between Agrus Kos, Eternal …

For future reference, it's okay to put multiple questions about the same card into the original post. But it looks like you had these follow-up thoughts far enough from each other that you might not have been able to edit the OP, so don't worry about it for this one.

You draw a card for each copy of Basilica Skullbomb's ability. Copying an ability copies the entire effect (everything after the ":").

Whichever copy of The Ozolith's ability resolves first will move counters and the others (including the original ability, since it will always resolve last) will do nothing. This is primarily because the triggered ability has an "intervening 'if' clause" that requires The Ozolith to actually have counters on it ("... if The Ozolith has counters on it..."). Even if that wasn't the case, the definition of "moving" a counter requires that there be something to move from the original location, and once the first copy resolves The Ozolith won't have any counters left to move.

All of the creatures will be unblockable from Key to the City. The "up to one target" is just there in case you want to use it to discard a card for some other reason without targeting anything. The fact is that it did target only Agrus in your example and can therefore be copied with Agrus' ability.

The copy effects for Mirage Mirror will overwrite each other as they resolve. This is just how the interaction of multiple copy effects works. You can make responses in-between to activate abilities it temporarily gains in the process (e.g. firebreathing, regeneration shields, activated flying etc.) which through the layer system will be applied on top of whatever base characteristics it ultimately ends up with from the last copy effect. Since the original ability will be the last one to resolve, that means the final base characteristics of the Mirror will be Agrus and you will have to deal with the Legend Rule.

The Delina, Wild Mage example works the way you think it does but you still have to pay the mana required by Agrus' ability each time, so it will be difficult to go "infinite".
