Defiler of Flesh

Creature — Phyrexian Horror

Menace (This creature can't be blocked except by two or more creatures.)

As an additional cost to cast black permanent spells, you may pay 2 life. Those spells cost less to cast if you paid life this way. This effect reduces only the amount of black mana you pay.

Whenever you cast a black permanent spell, target creature you control gets +1/+1 and gains menace until end of turn.

Not sure if Springleaf Drum would work in here? Your Commander comes out quite early and doesn't tap to use his ability, also useful if you steal a creature or make a small token.

If you end up using Tymaret's ability a fair bit, some Lifelink might be nice since it's damage, Mask of Griselbrand seems like a fit (great if your Commander dies a lot), possibly Basilisk Collar. Either of those is also quite good with Rite of the Raging Storm, and if it's not killed you can sacrifice the token with your Commander each turn (same if a 5/1 trample is useless otherwise). Another great sacrifice source could be Ophiomancer (but it's a bit pricey), or Ogre Slumlord, which can make a ton of bodies in some matches. Sifter of Skulls is a budget pawn of ulamog, not sure if you want both (but I think I would).

If you're using Crux of Fate, I feel like you should consider Sarkhan the Masterless, it's Dragon tokens will dodge the wipe, and he can make you harder to attack if you have a few Dragons out.

If you like a land that can make a creature, there are also Kher Keep and Springjack Pasture, both make 0/1s, but they are technically bodies.

It's an old/weird card, but Kyren Negotiations has some synergy with your Commander, it turns any creatures you have out into damage sources, even if they can't attack, handy to use before sacrificing something maybe?

Whenever I see Whisper, it makes me think of Hell's Caretaker, Caretaker is more awkward timing-wise, but it's also only 1 for 1. I really love Coffin Queen, especially to reanimate opponent's stuff, but she is a bit pricey.

Since your Commander is a Zombie, have you thought about using Gravecrawler? If you have enough support, you could make your Commander into an infinite combo, but I think even if you just cast Gravecrawler 2 or 3 times a turn you're probably not doing too badly? The fact that it's not a token means it'll work with Pawn or Sifter of Skulls, and Bog Initiate can turn their mana into Black, so you can recast Gravecrawler at least. Defiler of Flesh can also help recast Gravecrawler (or any other Black permanent).

Have you considered Defiler of Flesh and K'rrik, Son of Yawgmoth as ramp?

Also, If you combine Peer into the Abyss and Underworld Dreams That's practically insta-kill on most opponents.

Hope this helps. Happy Hunting!

Font of Agonies is a must for any deck relying on paying life to cast spells. I have it in my K'rrik, Son of Yawgmoth deck and can kill a surprising number of creatures if both are kept on the battlefield long enough.

There's no guarantee you can get K'rrik on the battlefield soon enough to make a difference. That's why I recommend finding a spot for Defiler of Flesh to give you an increase in chances of having the ability to pay life instead of mana.

Also, Crypt Ghast, while legal in mono-black decks, can lead other players with the mistaken impression that it isn't legal due to the extort cost.

Tainted Remedy is very flavorful for a Liliana deck, but unless you add more cards that allow your opponents to gain life(including, but not limited to, Grollub and Triskaidekaphobia), or in a play circle where lifegain is well utilized, it's mostly a dead card. If you wish for an alternative I'd recommend Vito, Thorn of the Dusk Rose.

As for benefitting from Graveyard recursion, may I suggest Syr Konrad, the Grim? Get this on the battlefield with the Gravecrawler/Phyrexian Altar combo and it's an Insta-win.

Have you considered Liliana's Caress with all the discard in your deck?

That's all for now. Thank you for reading me out. I hope this helps. Happy Hunting!

ArmchairRuler on Is Defiler of Faith's ability …

I am working on a Verrak, Warped Sengir deck and I wanted to Include Defiler of Faith and Defiler of Flesh in the deck. Verrak's ability states that it cannot be used with mana abilities, but neither of the Defilers directly produce mana as far as I can tell. Would I be able to pay the two life a second time to double dip on the cost reduction on these cards?

Right on! Yeah, I pulled Defiler of Flesh in the DMU pre-release and was really excited... until I realized his "pay 2 life" ability, can only be used once per permanent, whereas K'rrik lets you pay life for any black symbol of any black spell. I was looking at Bloodthirsty Aerialist in mine as well. I'll see where the budget is when I get a rough draft assembled and see if I can swing to get K'rrik. Definitely someone who will go in eventually, just not sure if he'll make the initial build.

Hey, good start. To help with deck building add 36 lands, even just basic Swamps to start, to see how many deck spots you have left to fill? How about the name Infectious Invasion?

Other areas to help improve gameplay are more ramp sources and more draw sources. Sheoldred is 7 mana you'll want ramp to consistently cast her as well as cast many high mana cost infect creatures. Dark Ritual, Defiler of Flesh and Culling the Weak are good, but consider more?

Black does well with mana efficient draw for the cost of life or a permanent. Weatherlight Compleated looks to be powerful, but slow and Phyrexian Rager is subpar, consider more draw?

Infect gives poison counters to players when any type of damage is done by the creature with infect, not just combat damage. Vindictive Vampire when it has infect gives each opponent a poison counter when a creature you control dies.

Good luck with your deck.

Balaam__ I agree about building towards a goal that is non-traditional:

Building to win is so Spike, and I wanna win like Timmy or Johnny. I personally think this deck is more Johnny because at first glance.. you might miss some of these key interactions!

I.e.: things like how Zombie Infestation makes bodies that can be tossed for Scourge of Nel Toth, and then replenish your hand with Shadow of the Grave.

Boneyard Scourge is a cool card, but admittedly it isn't eternal format legal... that doesn't mean I won't use his happy ass anyways!

As far as "going second" as a precedent, I would think things like Serum Powder could help do a thing.. I even really like the idea of "going second" but having a strong "turn zero" presence to throw off your opponents (things like the Leylines or Chancellors).

Unfortunately, in competitive settings we both know it's gonna be typical "lame"/boring stuff like:

You splashed blue:

Or you splashed white:

Or, my personal favorite, if you splash green, you can have access to all my favorite removal, Graveyard staples, etc.:

And I wouldn't leave feedback about "How to" without covering the obvious ones, or at least some cards that immediately cross my mind for improvements:

There is a piece of my heart that wishes older Zombies had a more dangerous presence for this, like (I think) Lord of the Undead or Undead Warchief. Even a little slot for Soulless One.

Hell, I've even considered taking this theme to an EDH setting due to a video I saw of Jimmy Wong on Game Nights where he uses Asmoranomardicadaistinaculdacar as a psuedo-reanimator type build. With the inclusion of , I would especially love to use Bladewing the Risen or his newest iteration from Dominaria United. Initially, what I remembered wanting was "Zombies and Zombie Dragons".

And if we're mentioning that new set, Defiler of Flesh makes this blow up too. So many great "The Rot of the Horde" feeling cards that feed a sensation of an overwhelming wave of Undead minions!

Things like Abomination of Llanowar in a build would also be fun.

Really enjoyed our discussion about this and I'm really curious to see if/what kinda spin you would put on it!
