Dakmor Salvage

Land

Dakmor Salvage enters the battlefield tapped.

: Gain .

Dredge 2 (If you would draw a card, instead you may put exactly two cards from the top of your library into your graveyard. If you do, return this card from your graveyard to your hand. Otherwise, draw a card.)

I both love the name, deck description and general vibe of this deck Crow, for degenerate Gitrog fun, may I suggest Dakmor Salvage?

Thanks for the feedback.

Riftsweeper is insurance against Dakmor Salvage being exiled. That's part two of the Gitrog engine allowing you to basically draw your deck with a discard outlet.

Triumph of the Hordes is there to make Ayula's Influence more potent without needing to go infinite first.

I agree with Ashnod's Altar coming out but Intent turns a manadork into what I need instead of a dork, so I'm less inclined to cut it.

I do think Dark Ritual and Spirit Guide are super aggressive and greedy - don't know if I must have it, our pod is fast but probably not that fast.

Yeah, Resevoir is there just to make Citadel go zoom, but it probably isn't necessary at all. They're just neat cards and I don't have a home for it yet, but I think you're right in pulling it out (and probably the pair of them frankly, I'll get them a new home).

All the discard stuff I'm loathe to cut - they enable the Dakmor/Gitrog bullshittery which is the core of the deck's draw engine.

rekkim I really appreciate the suggestions! The mana cost of those cards are just too high to be viable. I am very lucky to get more than 3 lands with this deck as most go to the graveyard and Dakmor Salvage is very slow. This deck works by being fast and aggressive.

Something with retrace? It works wonders in conjunction with Dakmor Salvage. Raven's Crime would be my first pick under normal circumstances, but despite a desperate dearth of interaction, I figure it might be better to run threats like Call the Skybreaker, Spitting Image or Worm Harvest because the rest of your non-permanent slots're dedicated to opening the combos.

Suggestions:

  1. Trim 2x Prismatic Vista or 2x Woodland Cemetery for 2x Boseiju, Who Endures. Most of your costs are single pip, so you don't need to fix as hard.
  2. Trim 1x Forest for 1x Swamp or 1x Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth. Either would be find, swamp is searchable off fetch, but you run two creatures with double black pips, and nothing with double green.
  3. Consider Life from the Loam & Dakmor Salvage package as recursive dredge. Loam also lets you abuse fetches to thin deck. Pairs nicely with Bloodghast.

Tur on Hidden Power - Crop Rotation

TypicalTimmy

Thank you for noticing my intention, that is the key point of this argument!! Newer and casual players tend to disregard or ignore Crop Rotation, because they only see it for very expensive cards such as: Gaea's Cradle, Mishra's Workshop, The Tabernacle at Pendrell Vale, Serra's Sanctum, Bazaar of Baghdad, and Diamond Valley. (I.e. sacrifice a Forest and get Gaea's Cradle.)

In fact, I own all of these cards and in only one single case is Gaea's Cradle the first priority for Crop Rotation. Here are a few examples using commander decks: (These do not include utility lands, such as Bojuka Bog, Cavern of Souls, nor Homeward Path.)

Commander: Lord Windgrace

Lotus Field is great for ramping with Lord Windgrace minus three ability. Cabal Coffers is fantastic for ramp. Field of the Dead provides a win condition and blockers.

Commander: Mina and Denn, Wildborn

Because of Fiery Emancipation, Valakut, the Molten Pinnacle became ridiculously overpowered. Nine damage every time a mountain enters the battlefield. Furthermore, the Scapeshift combo causes you to win the game.

Commander: The Gitrog Monster

Dakmor Salvage is the combo engine for The Gitrog Monster. Therefore searching for it, the sacrificing it to The Gitrog Monster is crucial for the deck.

Commander: Gargos, Vicious Watcher

Hall of the Bandit Lord provides haste to the hydra tribal. Reliquary Tower is necessary for cards such as Soul's Majesty and Greater Good. Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx is pretty nice with the triple green devotion from Gargos, Vicious Watcher.

Commander: Carth the Lion

Field of the Dead is way too good in Carth the Lion, because Garruk, Cursed Huntsman emblems immediately with Carth the Lion. Making at least one 5/5 zombie with trample every turn is very strong.

Commander: Maelstrom Wanderer

Sanctum of Eternity allows you to put Maelstrom Wanderer back into your hand, allowing for the on-cast trigger to happen again. High Market not only taps for mana, but allows you to send Maelstrom Wanderer back to the command zone.

Commander: Sythis, Harvest's Hand

Unfortunately, for this deck Serra's Sanctum is the best target for Crop Rotation, however Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx is a close second best target. With Sythis, Harvest's Hand you have to commit heavily to the board, so your devotion is going to be high. Field of the Dead gives blockers before you can stabilize with Sphere of Safety, Solitary Confinement, and Ghostly Prison.

Commander: Marwyn, the Nurturer

Unfortunately, for this deck Gaea's Cradle is the best target for Crop Rotation, however Wirewood Lodge is a close second best target for untapping Marwyn, the Nurturer. In fact, I found myself frequently choosing Wirewood Lodge over Gaea's Cradle because it does not draw as much threat for Strip Mine effects. Wizards of the Coast is frightfully aware of this fact and has made many cards to compensate by using creatures and enchantments: Priest of Titania, Itlimoc, Cradle of the Sun, Elvish Archdruid, and Circle of Dreams Druid.

Hope this helps clarify my stance!

Love the suggestions wallisface! I was trying to fool around with the Dakmor Salvage but it just wasn't doing it for me. Optimizing the lands for a turn 2 Smallpox followed by a turn 3 Vindicate is absolutely the right choice.

I took a look at your decklist and going all in on land destruction is definitely a tempting option. Shadow of Doubt is a nasty surprise for sure. I think I might just be leaning toward general value and grinding out my opponent for now, but if it doesn't pan out I may look into trying some of those ideas out.

Dead_Blue_ on Will this 7-rack be competitive?

Lilli really is a must in the deck, I’ve played a lot of 8Rack but not in the current meta as I’m just returning to magic but I’ve found the red version just not worth it. You’re still susceptible to enchantment hate& if you’re going to run red the Rix Maadi, Dungeon Palace is pretty much the best reason to. Just echoing what has already been said, Funeral Charm is great, discard at instant speed that doubles at removal Is extremely powerful. I find there’s not really room in the deck for flavor cards but if you do want flavor Waste Not Bitterblossom or Nyxathid are excellent choices. Also you may want to trim Raven's Crime. It’s one of the best cards in the deck but multiples of it are useless and you absolutely have to run Dakmor Salvage with it as it completes the engine.
