Charming Prince

Creature — Human Noble

When Charming Prince enters the battlefield, choose one —

  • Scry 2. (Look at the top two cards of your library, then put any number of them on top or bottom of your library in any order.)
  • You gain 3 life.
  • Exile another target creature you own. Return it to the battlefield under your control at the beginning of the next end step.

This is a very, very intriguing start of a decklist!!!! I was just looking at another deck that had the enchantment Skybind - I think it would be fascinating to do a black/white deck combining some of these very powerful ETB effects with the flicker effect of that card, multiplied by Panharmonicon!!!!

Just some random black, white, or black/white cards I think might have good ETB effects for this concept:

Gnawing Vermin

Thieves' Guild Enforcer

Cauldron Familiar

Blood Seeker

Burglar Rat

Corpse Knight

Corrupt Court Official

Dirty Rat

Gatekeeper of Malakir

Tainted Adversary

Basilica Bell-Haunt

Company Commander (I mainly play big casual multi-person games so this suggestion is with that in mind!)

Slumbering Keepguard

Soul Warden

Charming Prince

I'd make a list of all the cheap enchantments I think might work for this too, but I see I am already going overboard.

Tbh I am a fairly new player and very new to deckbuilding but thought I'd drop you a line!!!

This deck seems a bit on the budget side, considering you're running mostly Soul Wardens over Souls Attendants, but you should definitely be running Ephemerate over Cloudshift (or even better, both), and you probably want to be running a couple of Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx. May also want to consider slotting in a Charming Prince or two over a couple of your Flickerwisps. Sure, it's less devotion, but it's also 50% less mana and has 2 additional ETB modes.

Heya, nice to see another Arena player on here, so +1 just for that!

If this were me, I'd make this Esper-colored (Black/Blue/White). Adding White opens up a lot in terms of flicker effects, including (not limited to): Cloudshift, Ephemerate, Charming Prince, Flicker of Fate, Hallowed Respite, which would make re-casting them unnecessary since I see you're using stuff like Unsummon to work that mechanic.

It also opens up some other options like Meddling Mage who can be a real fun one to bounce and re-name cards with to mess with your opponent. This effect combos well with Black's Thoughtseize type cards and a couple blue Counterspell effects like Test of Talents which let you look at your opponent's hand to better pick things to name.

Other rare Wildcard options for Esper colors are Raffine's Tower and Fabled Passage to help secure a good tri-colored mana base, Void Rend for reliable universal permanent destruction, or just search through White/Blue gold cards as there is a LOT to choose from in the way of flicker / enter the battlefield effects for those colors.

Either way, hope to see ya around in the shuffler, or add me if you feel like hashing out some more decks and/or playtesting! Good luck!

Oelala Esper. I might consider expanding to 3 colour decks sometime soon as well, cause de variety in card options seems super fun.

Thanks for the tip! Yeah, Charming Prince is very high on my want list, waiting for a good deal to lock him in. I always disregarded Watcher for Tomorrow, but now you mention it, the card does give me a deep scry and draw into my deck, so I might consider that as well. I got elite guardmage for my Brago deck, which I love as a card. I might consider Inspiring Overseer more as a sideboard option, cause of its versatility (life, draw, and fly damage).

Nice build! I've got an Esper ETB deck that's really fun. I also had issues with high CMC for a bit, but put a bit of work in and made some replacements that have proven to be really good:

Charming Prince - solid Scry, or can bounce one of your better ETBs if you draw it late game. I've never drawn this and wished I drew something else. It's just always good.

Watcher for Tomorrow - sort of draw, but IMO a bit better since it lets me select out of my top 4.

Inspiring Overseer - basically Elite Guardmage-lite.

Hope that helps!

Nice brew, mate. I run esper blink/flicker helmed by Aminatou, the Fateshifter, so there's a little bit of card overlap there :)

There are a couple minor changes you might consider: Topiary Stomper. I like the Plant Dino because you can search for any type of basic, not just Forests, and it's also a decent body. Elite Guardmage, aka Cloudblazer-lite, is another great lifegain/draw piece. I've never drawn it and wished I had drawn something else. Yorion, Sky Nomad is a really great Flicker effect/enabler for other things. If you have it with Charming Prince / some other flicker creature, you can create a ton of value in very short order.

As far as cuts for any of those? ...That's the hard part, lol.

A few non-budget ideas that I'm including for the reason that they may help give you other, more budget ideas: Brutalizer Exarch -> Eladamri's Call. Eladamri's Call on opponent's end step, get Archaeomancer, play archaeomancer on your turn targeting Eladamri's Call in your graveyard, boom, two tutored creatures. Congregation at Dawn is a more budget tutor that could accomplish this, too (although in that case I'd probably put arch 2nd or 3rd from top).

Panharmonicon - if you're having trouble getting creatures to stick, this can help give them more impact when they can land, even if they don't stick around long.

Good luck, and have fun!

Looks fun!

Workhorse goes infinite with Emiel. Infinite ETB triggers. Infinite mana with Heartstone out.

Charming Prince is a neat card. You don't go infinite with it, but if you're against decks that permanently steals cards (Etali, Primal Storm, Xanathar, Guild Kingpin, etc) this can get them back. And if you have enough mana, you can bounce it repeatedly to save creatures from boardwipes.

Be careful with Yisharn, its ability prevents you from going infinite with Brood Monitor, since you have to sacrifice the eldrazi for mana.

You may want to consider adding some low mana ETB creatures for tempo. Right now Emiel is cheaper than most of your pay off creatures, so you're going Ramp -> Turn 3 Emiel -> Turn 4 Creature (4/5/6 drop) -> Turn 5 actually getting to activate Emiel for extra value. Wall of Blossoms, Elvish Visionary, Wall of Omens, etc are good chump blockers, replace themselves, and can accelerate you earlier than the big creatures that are targets for removal.

One thing I don't get is why Polyraptor is there, it's a good card but I don't see much synergy with Emiel?

Oh (bleep) you're right! LMAO. Like I said, I've been playing since Revised and have a LOT of decks. Always had a penchant for tribal knights (even though there have been/are better tribes for sure through the years). My Modern version does, in fact, run Giver of Runes. The Kor designation doesn't allow me to Cavern of Souls her in but I do run plenty of white sources. I'm sorry bud. 100% my bad. Sorry about that. I need to NOT drink my scotch and give advice. I just get soooooo excited when I see a solid knight tribal build I lose control.

I WILL post my ACTUAL MODERN legal version in the next few days. Giver of Runes is my only non-human or non knight creature in that deck. I run everything else human and/or knight in that deck-most are both. I announce my first Cavern of Souls as "knight" which prevents counter magic on all but the Giver of Runes and Noble Hierarch. Those both being (ideally) early drops-counter magic doesn't normally come into play.

My current, most regularly played, Modern deck is not knights (although I do play it still for a change of pace once in awhile but it's not my number one deck-hence my leading you astray). My current regular MODERN deck is as follows:

Deck: Greif Blade

Main: 4 Ephemerate 1 Poet's Quill 1 Batterskull 4 Giver of Runes 1 Sword of Fire and Ice 2 Plains 3 Godless Shrine 3 Concealed Courtyard 3 Skyclave Apparition 1 Takenuma, Abandoned Mire 3 Tidehollow Sculler 2 Malakir Rebirth  Flip 2 Charming Prince 1 Kaldra Compleat 1 Silent Clearing 1 Shriekmaw 4 Grief 3 Feign Death 4 Marsh Flats 1 Lion Sash 1 Flooded Strand 3 Touch the Spirit Realm 1 Swamp 1 Castle Locthwain 2 Agadeem's Awakening  Flip 2 Solitude 4 Stoneforge Mystic 1 Verdant Catacombs

Sideboard: 2 Leyline of Sanctity 1 Shadowspear 2 Damn 1 Sword of Sinew and Steel 2 Damping Sphere 2 Sanctum Prelate 2 Kaya's Guile 2 Dauthi Voidwalker 1 Reduce to Memory

This is the list I run most frequently so it's the one I know best and have readily available to share. This is NOT a net-deck AFAIK. If there is an identical or similar list floating around in Cyberspace it's purely coincidental. This list was home brewed and is one of my favorites I've ever made through the years.
