Chain of Smog

Sorcery

Target player discards two cards. That player may copy this spell and may choose a new target for that copy.

Profet93 these are great suggestions, especially the lockout pieces in black since those are cards I'd never thought of using (or even really heard of before) and that'll protect my board pretty nicely. I also didn't realize there was a baby Cabal Coffers out there so that'll be an immediate include over Mortuary Mire or Grasping Dunes and Thespian's Stage will likely replace the other one since that'll give me access to better ramp.

The wincon(s) at this moment is either through combat damage or through sacrifice synergies with Syr Konrad, the Grim, Vein Ripper, and/or Zulaport Cutthroat and as a last resort Skithiryx, the Blight Dragon will help close out some games too. I toyed with the idea of Chain of Smog + Professor Onyx for an alternate wincon but that felt like it would be too close to cEDH for my pod since we generally don't play combos that are less than 3 cards.

Slightly off topic, but holy cow, that's criminal!

Chain of Smog doesn't require that the target player actually has enough cards to discard. If you target someone with fewer than two cards in hand, they will discard their entire hand (which could be zero). So you can target and re-target yourself, no matter how many cards you have in hand.

Archmage Emeritus lets you draw a card whenever you cast or copy an instant or sorcery. So if you keep targeting yourself with Chain of Smog, you will continually draw a card, then immediately discard and draw another card. This can happen as many times as you choose, filling your graveyard and emptying your library as needed.

Nice deck! I started brewing AtBA almost immediately after seeing it spoiled and have been working on the deck making improvements/changes over time, and it is easily my favourite deck at the moment. One thing that I do differently with mine is focus more on low cost creatures that make tokens on ETB, things like Weaponcraft Enthusiast & Sengir Autocrat ideally as they make 2-3 tokens to get that first or second Blood Avatar cast, You're Confronted by Robbers is great also because it's an instant, Waylay is the cheapest way to make 3 tokens on your turn. Because of this I also run all the good reanimator spells, and since that includes Animate Dead I also run Abdel Adrian, Gorion's Ward, which on it's own is also good, especially if you run a lot of mana rocks. I chose not to run Worldgorger Dragon for the infinite mana combo as it isn't good on its own, where Abdel Adrian is. Since you run Fury Storm I would consider running Storm-Kiln Artist for the combo potential, as he is also good for ramping off of instants/sorceries and synergizes with the toke doublers (get Mondrak out of the sideboard and into the 99). It also combos with Chain of Smog for infinite mana if you're into that (I'm not). Academy Rector is awesome for cheating in Anointed Procession if you're about to make tokens or City on Fire if you already have Blood Avatar(s). Roaming Throne from Lost Caverns of Ixilan is also good for the same reasons Isshin is, but it has Ward 2 and is colourless. I also run most of the lower cost extra combat cards to try to maximize the attack triggers, Goblin Goliath has been an (expensive) all-star. Any planeswalker with + ability that make tokens are also great.

There are so many different things you could focus on with this deck I find it hard just to narrow it down to the gameplan you're after, which is one of the things I love about it. The one thing my deck is lacking now is Lifelink, I'm looking at Teysa Karlov because vigilance is great too, but I don't focus too much on death triggers, so Whip of Erebos may take the spot.

Excited to see future updates on this! Will post my decklist eventually and link it here, interested to see your comments.

ABunchofPigeons on Dihada Binder of Onyx?

Hey friends and degenerates - Trying to see if the Professor Onyx / Chain of Smog combo fits into a Dihada, Binder of Wills / Underworld Breach deck. Has anyone had experience brewing with this in that line? Thinking it might be good to have with Onakke Oathkeeper in the mix (get that in the grave to use it's ability to reanimate Professor Onyx if need be?)

My main thought on my Nath of the Gilt-Leaf deck is that it didn't capture the Sadistic Hypnotist combo. The power level, salt, and threats look right, and it captures Chain of Smog + Professor Onyx and Maralen of the Mornsong + Opposition Agent. It has a preference for hard locks and wincon combos. This isn't really wrong, especially when measuring salt levels, but it's something I noted.

The analysis of my Dromar and Xantcha lists look pretty much perfect. Good work!

Hey I'm just getting to know how to play Dina but I've been playing Golgari Combo for a while. One card that might help you have another consistent way to go off is Chain of Smog. I'm also a fan of Protean Hulk. Here's my list so you can see how they work. Also you can visit edhrec.com and search up Dina and click combos to check out other combos you might like. Hope this helps!

Rhadamanthus on At what point are spells …

The rules for how to copy a spell don't describe any "waiting period" for putting it onto the stack as they do for triggered abilities. Rule 707.10 just says "To copy a spell, activated ability, or triggered ability means to put a copy of it onto the stack..." This means the copy of Chain of Smog is put onto the stack as part of the original resolving, and the triggers from Surly Badgersaur would go on top of it since they have to wait until the next time a player receives priority to be put onto the stack.
