Calamity's Wake

Instant

Exile all graveyards. Players can't cast noncreature spells this turn. Exile Calamity's Wake.

My vote is for Ral, Caller of Storms. Considering the choices of the first two loyalty abilities, I don't think the power level justifies a 6 mana cost. That and I honestly believe you can get more bang for your buck with Guff's second loyalty ability.

Other cards that occurred to me and may want to consider adding are Reliquary Tower, Rowan, Scholar of Sparks  Flip and Teyo, the Shieldmage. I'm not entirely sure what you can remove to make room for these, but don't forget you have a commander who can get mana dorks on the battlefield for you and can draw you cards so don't be afaid to lean into that a bit.

While I was taking a another look at your deck, I noticed you have Blind Obedience. Even though the rules changed several years ago to allow it, the cost in the extort ability may be seen by some players as a violation of the color identity rule. I had a mono-black commander deck with a few extort cards and an opponent got really salty about it before another told him of the rule change. So I took them out to avoid future conflict.

If you choose to do the same, I'd recommend Lion Sash. Not only it will give you much needed graveyard hate without affecting your graveyard, but you'll be able to attach it to Gideon of the Trials while he's a creature and it can be tutored by Tezzeret the Seeker. Yes, I know its a creature, but Calamity's Wake and Rest in Peace will devastate your graveyard as well.

I hope this helps. Thank you for reading me out. Happy Hunting!

No prob dnthymamai! Totally understandable regarding the infinite combos; I know they can be polarizing among players. If your playgroup ever changes their mind, I'd recommend adding that combo for sure.

If you're looking for more graveyard/aristocrats hate, I'd recommend:

I think you can probably swap out Changeling Outcast for something else. Since Burakos can fill any role in the party, they have less need for Changelings than Nalia de'Arnise might. Zhentarim Bandit or Preacher of the Schism could be some options for more Treasure support or draw. Preacher as a 2/4 with Deathtouch for 3 mana alone is pretty nice.

I started brewing Boros and Mardu versions of the War Doctor, and it made me realize I hope we get a Mardu "exile matters" commander at some point in the future haha. Here's some stuff in Red/White that I think could work with your deck:

  • I'd recommend Soul Partition as something that can pull double duty as either removal or single target protection. Either way, it'll help the War Doctor get some more counters.

  • Grenzo, Havoc Raiser could also be a fairly low-end option to reward any aggro swings, and also help War Doc.

  • Tectonic Giant is another aggro option with impulse draw as one of its modal options.

  • Since the War Doctor cares about cards being exiled from anywhere, Calamity's Wake could be a quick way to get a ton of counters on him via graveyard hate, and also put an end to any combos that turn.

  • Volcanic Torrent could be a removal option that's on theme with Cascade.

  • It's an older card, but Parallax Wave can exile multiple creatures.

  • Lastly, Hofri Ghostforge can be like a recursion piece for this deck and still be on theme for exile matters shenanigans.

Have you considered Revoke Existence? It's a great way to get around the indestructible.

Another card you may want to consider is Scroll of Avacyn for some card draw.

Lands you may want to consider for this deck are Kabira Crossroads, Sandstone Bridge and Scavenger Grounds.

Some other graveyard hate you can put into your deck are Calamity's Wake and Tormod's Crypt.

I hope this helps. Happy Hunting!

Your deck is off to a strong start! I do have some recommendations for stuff you can probably cut, along with a few potential swaps, depending on your budget.

Potential Cuts:

  • Hopeful Initiate - Kind of slow and clunky to actually activate the removal aspect of the card. Not super reliable as removal since it depends on 1) attacking with a bigger creature once or twice, depending if Isshin is out 2) surviving combat 3) Then activating its cost.

  • Savior of Ollenbock - Similar reasoning as Hopeful Initiate

Potential Additions:

  • Reconnaissance - A bit pricey, but one of the strongest cards out there for Isshin. Acts as a pseudo-Vigilance anthem, and can save your creatures in unfavorable blocking situations. This article can break down how that timing works for the trigger.

  • Scapegoat - Additional board protection that's both mana efficient and friendly to the wallet.

  • Calamity's Wake - Instant speed graveyard hate, if that's something relevant in your meta

  • Chivalric Alliance - Newer tech, but can draw cards and make tokens.

  • Dolmen Gate - Also kinda pricey, but can help round out your suite of board protection you already have in your deck.

  • Breena, the Demagogue - If you like Karazikar, you might like Breena. She gets huge fast, and opponents (in my meta) tend to let her stick around since they can benefit. I've won two games with her recently because she could essentially one shot people, as she reached 20+ power. She has recently become one of my favorite creatures in my Isshin deck.

  • Commissar Severina Raine - Another Hellrider style effect, plus has the benefit of being a slightly worse Skullclamp all rolled into one.

  • Anguished Unmaking - Very versatile removal

  • Generous Gift - Could be a decent swap for Hopeful Initiate, as it hits a variety of targets at Instant speed. The 3/3 Elephant donated to opponents is not really impactful, and usually dies in combat or boardwipes most games.

  • Ogre Battledriver & Fervor - Both excellent Haste anthems

I hope these suggestions are helpful. I'm down to chat through suggestions if you're interested. Best of luck with Isshin, he's a lot of fun to pilot. He's easily my favorite commander of the past year (so far) lol.

Looking at Sideboard, and I love the choices made. Curious to hear more of your thoughts on the matchup vs Blue/Azorious spirits and how your game plan is. I've been really liking Weathered Runestone recently though I like having Grafdigger's Cage for it's CMC despite it not stopping vehicles from returning via Greasefang eff. Another card that I've not seen used much is Calamity's Wake. I feel like it's a great tech for the right matchups but maybe it's too niche or too new? I figured it's helpful since you're mainly playing creatures. Again, I'm a big fan of your deck!

I like that you went creatureless with this. I wanted too but there were too many creatures with tax abilities I wanted to utilize.

Null Brooch :) you know I'm just as big a fan as your are of this forgotten gem but this strategy is not built around the graveyard. An argument can be made for Forbid as a never ending counterspell is justified in the draw-go strategy. I have the perfect Exodus set replacement for the Brooch: Fade Away!

Soul Partition > Revoke Existence

Dovin's Veto and Supreme Verdict are too good to not be in this list.

Calamity's Wake I keep squeezing this into decks and am yet to be disappointed by it.

Caerwyn on I really miss flavor text

You can still find plenty of great flavour text - they just tend to be on cards other than the legendary creatures. That means most of the great flavour text is constrained to bulk cards, but that has always been the case.

Now, just doing a quick survey of older sets, it does appear Legendary Creatures used to have a higher proportion of cards with flavour text. They also had a higher proportion of unplayable or mechanically uninteresting Legendary Creatures. Those are not unrelated data points - more rules text on a card means more mechanical complexity, but it also cuts out your ability to include reminder text.

Just looking at Brother’s War, plenty of playable cards have fantastic flavour text - though Unearth, with its long reminder text, and Prototype’s formatting both cut into the space on bulk cards some. My personal favourite from the set would be the depressing solemnity of Calamity's Wake, particularly with how it plays with the art of that card.

Now, I will say that I probably read less flavour text now than in the past - but that has more to do with Wizards’ endless spoiler season making me less inclined to sit down and read bulk cards for their rules and flavour texts.
