Thanks for posting everyone.

@smack80 I suppose this would fare ok against some of the precons out there, that’s not a bad idea. Might be a nice way to introduce a newbie to different concepts and styles of deck building.

@DreadKhan lots of good suggestions, as always. I can’t believe I missed Blanket of Night. It’s a bit more mana intensive as you said, but since I can’t run the top tier Urborg for $ reasons it’s another potential swampification card to consider. Good call. Oona's Prowler is another good one. Morsel Theft also seems surprisingly capable here, and is probably a good sideboard option against burn/drain decks as you mentioned. Thanks for the suggestions, and when I revisit this one I’ll most likely work some in.

Just tossing it out there (because it can let you toss a Filth to the bin), Oona's Prowler, which is a discard outlet for both players, suicidal in some metas obviously, but a 3/1 flying rogue for 1B is pretty pushed other than that, and if your deck is already making them pitch stuff, it'll be hard to debuff your Prowler. They just reprinted Prowler, so it can be had on the cheap.

Glint-Sleeve Siphoner is a rogue that draws cards in mono-black. If your deck runs some removal it ends up being pretty hard to block, so it can draw more than 1 card sometimes.

Vampire Cutthroat is a nice 1 drop, lifelink is a nice perk. When I had a similar deck, I actually enjoyed using Morsel Theft as a small draw spell/life gain effect, very helpful vs Burn, and if you can manage to cast it for B, it'll feel pretty good.

Another way to make things Swamps in Legacy on a budget is to use Blanket of Night. 3 mana for the effect is worse, but idk, auras seem questionable vs some decks, maybe I'm wrong?

I honestly wonder if you shouldn't shave a land or 2 for Dark Ritual? I'd probably go down 2 lands and 2 of something else for 4 of Ritual, but I love that card and always try to use it, even when it doesn't strictly work.

DreadKhan,

Energy Flux: I did heavily consider Energy Flux when creating the deck, but ultimately decided against it because it doesn't fit my style. I think it would be dangerous to wait a full 4 turns using just land to get Zur out, however, that does not mean it may be worth using rocks and destroying everyone's artifacts after Zur is out. Also, it is important to note that sacrificing does not "destroy" a permanent, but simply places it in the graveyard; thus you would still need to pay Darksteel Ingot's cost (here it is on the Wiki https://mtg.fandom.com/wiki/Indestructible, under the "description" section). However you're still right, it is a good card in this deck and I think it would fit nicely, especially against any artifact decks. I don't doubt how good it is; maybe I'm just baby for being too scared to kill my own artifacts.

Dreamscape Artist: Hmm, it is definitely tempting. However, I think it would be better to use enchantments to guarantee land drops. It's for that reason that I included The Birth of Meletis and The Restoration of Eiganjo  Flip, and I have been debating the necessity of Blanket of Night.

Dance of Many: This looks to be a really fun card. Although it would be sad to commit to an opponent's creature and have to kill your own if you need to remove it. I'll keep an eye on this one should I feel like changing things up.

Ash Barrens: Seems like a shoe in to me. It's cheap and as you said, it fixes mana if necessary. Personally, with 48 mana (land + rocks) in this deck already, I think mana fixing won't be much of an issue.

Retreat to Coralhelm: Yeah, this one is a bit out there. Considering that there is already a lot of draw enchantments, it would seem like a bit of a waste to scry. As for tapping creatures, Zur should be unblockable sooner or later as well as have vigilance.

Darksteel Ingot and Skyclave Relic: These are both good cards, and do better than the cluestones and Sol Grail. I think Darksteel is cheap enough to throw it in without question.

Love the idea, but I don't think the leeches are particularly good. I think it would be better to include proper land destruction such as Icequake, Rain of Tears and Rancid Earth. I'd say even Befoul would be better, since it can also kill a creature.

Aside from this small criticism, I loved the idea. It's unfortunate Blanket of Night isn't Modern legal :(((

linksdeity! Hi sir, it is an honour hearing from you! In my opinion you wrote the (black)bible on Volrath. My deck has drawn so much inspiration from your deck. Thank you for all your tips - what I should have mentioned in the original post is that my deck focuses on cards with old-school borders, so some of your suggestions are out of my reach, but the suggestions that I can use, are included in my deck ;) I have less protection than you, which I hope to make up for in my new playgroup with more recursion. I love your instant speed boardwipe strategy, which I could do with Winding Canyons and Crypt Rats ! Now I can't have Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth so I was thinking maybe Blanket of Night - but maybe that is too coincidental? Also are the swords THAT good? I just got Sword of Light and Shadow, would 2 more be worth it to include at the expense of evasion? I think I could possibly get Sword of Feast and Famine, and surely the newer ones.

Anyways, thank you for all your advice, I really appreciate it!

I love mono black (i am looking at building one myself)...here are some possible adds:

Creatures: Yahenni, Undying Partisan Vampire of the Dire Moon Vito, Thorn of the Dusk Rose

Non-Creatures: Thoughtseize Sorin, Imperious Bloodlord Quagmire to counter anyone with swampwalk which you're vulnerable to Funeral Charm, Leshrac's Rite, and Nighthaze all give additional creatures swampwalk...to use with Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth Blanket of Night, Evil Presence, Tainted Well among others, all can turn an opponent's land into a swamp to combo with swampwalk and make some creatures unblockable Call the Bloodline

Lands: Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth for the swampwalk creatures

Check some Shirei decks, most creatures have just 1 power, so they can sac/reanimate all the time and its pretty sick :)
Village Rites is better version of Altar's Reap
Black Market can be very good, especially if you can go crazy and put tons of counters on it.. or it just eats removal instead of some more important card in your deck.
Tortured Existence - absolutely great creature retrieval just for and can go crazy with your Desecrated Tomb. I use it in combination of Phyrexian Altar as infinite etb/etg engine. Bitter Ordeal to exile everyone's library; Emergence Zone to make it instant speed if needed.
Hell's Caretaker can be fairly good reanimator for Shirei aswell.
Crypt of Agadeem,Dark Ritual,Bubbling Muck,Songs of the Damned are cheap for mana ramp.
Mutilate is just board version of Defile, might aswell use both?
Altar of the Brood easy mill just for that triggers upon any permanent you play.
Insidious Dreams - to cast your combos from top of your library if you manage to keep Bolas's Citadel on board. Forever Young/Gravepurge for casting creatures from your graveyard (top of your library with Bolas's Citadel).
Blanket of Night if you get more non-swamp lands and you're on low budget. Its just cheaper enchantment version of Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth.
Call the Bloodline could be easy way to get creatures into your graveyard, get some sacrifice dork and reanimate them later.
Priest of Forgotten Gods this pretty lady could be a nice addition to Shirei aswell, if you get some cards that make sacrifice dorks/etc. blahblah

Nice rat deck! :3

I might consider to swap the following cards:
Out: Blood Divination for: Bankrupt in Blood for - same amount of cards, but BiB costs less to cast, but requires sac 2 creatures.
Out: Coat of Arms for: Haunted Crossroads/Mortuary - You run not small amount of non-rat creatures. Even if CoA can buff your army of rats a lot, it also affects your opponent's creatures, but that depends on what kind of deck they use. Some kind of creature recovery could be definitely nice too.
Out: Rats' Feast for: Suffer the Past - Not a rat related card, but its strictly better version.
Out: Palace Siege - Im not really sure about this one, but I think that you would be better with any other creature recovery card/life pinging card. I would either use Force of Despair (board wipe if someone goes crazy; combos with your Thrilling Encore, which also works well with Living Death) or Profane Command, which is very flexible card.
Out: Temple of the False God for: Crypt of Agadeem/Bojuka Bog/Cabal Stronghold/Reliquary Tower...

Some more cards that could help aswell:
Emergence Zone; Path of Ancestry; Myriad Landscape; Altar of the Brood; Village Rites; Phyrexian Arena/Necropotence; Blanket of Night (budget version of Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth); Unearth.
Cards that DemMeowsephs mentioned are also very good and strong, just not very budget friendly. Just like Cavern of Souls.
