Archmage Ascension

Enchantment

At the beginning of each end step, if you drew two or more cards this turn, you may put a quest counter on Archmage Ascension.

As long as Archmage Ascension has six or more quest counters on it, if you would draw a card, you may instead search your library for a card, put that card into your hand, then shuffle your library.

Honestly Archmage Ascension isn't my pet card at all lol. If I had to choose a pet card, it would definitely be Soldevi Digger. There aren't many cards like it in Magic. Hullbreaker Horror is hard to replace if you keep creatures in the deck. Tidespout Tyrant costs too much mana for what it does if you ask me. You are only running 32 lands so hard casting bigger mana cost spells is going to be difficult. (I personally try to always run 38-40ish lands in most decks). Did you consider using Jace, Unraveler of Secrets?

Portent wow. Own it. Completely overlooked it. The slow cantrip is some neat tech for this list.

Artificer's Assistant you are right. I threw it in for the cheap scrying but Proteus Staff is spicy.

Cryptic Command for obvious reasons I'm avoiding counter magic but this is a powerful swiss army knife. Good eye!

Archmage Ascension seen this in a few of your lists. Your pet card. Hard to argue with instead of drawing a card Demonic Tutor it's just without a proliferate strategy to add counters it's a big requirement to meet.

Ward of Bones this is one of my pet card. Works best in planeswalker/instant/sorcery heavy strategies.

Dispersing Orb You are determined to not play with creatures haha I'm going to seriously consider this if I end up cutting Hullbreaker Horror and Tidespout Tyrant but the cantrip removal they grant is too powerful. Show and Tell fodder in absence of Blightsteel Colossus. Awesome suggestion.

Portent, Crawlspace, Web of Inertia, Dream Tides, War Tax, Glacial Chasm, Monastery Siege, Cryptic Command, Extract, Portcullis, Dissipation Field, Overburden, Archmage Ascension, Frozen Aether, Reins of Power, Rapid Hybridization, Siren's Call, Cyclonic Rift, Mission Briefing, Reality Shift, and Resculpt are just a few you could potentially use. You can very easily go creatureless if you want to. You just have to lean on different win conditions and use cards like Ward of Bones /etc.

So, after playing this deck for over a year, I still love it. But I faced a couple of major problems:

  • not enough draw without risk of getting an archenemy badge for casting two approaches to trigger Jori En, Ruin Diver

  • when I play with somebody who knows my deck they try to kill me before I can get one of my combo pieces

The only thought I have to solve those - put a Propaganda for protection and both Drift of Phantasms and Mystical Tutor for consistency. Also, 36 Approaches are overkill for me, so I think of cutting up to 30-32 and adding something like Izzet Charm or Prismari Command, or some drawing cantrips. And maybe Archmage Ascension and Rhystic Study as both of them are easily tutored by Drift of Phantasms.

Would appreciate some comments both with ideas and critics.

Oona, Malicious Snowball

TLDR: Deck is made for janky combos that involve everyone drawing a lot of cards so I can mill them, or setting up a Doomsday with Mirror of Fate

My budget for any single card is below $100.

Issue: Card draw and cuts

There are some cards in my deck that I feel can be cut but I don't know what to replace them with. The cards, I see at least, are Spellstutter Sprite, Glen Elendra Archmage, Ashiok, Nightmare Weaver, and Archmage Ascension.

Although I can absolutely see their place in countering spells to keep a steady board, tutoring cards, and possibly reanimating Nightmares, I think there might be cards that synergize better with Forced Fruition and personal card draw.

There are already cards I've considered, one being Font of Mythos but I already use that in my adapted tstorm823 Zedruu deck, and I'd like to not copy too many spells from one deck to another. And if possible, cutting Howling Mine as well for another personal draw card.

I want to make this deck unique, but at the same time, I don't want to sacrifice too much efficiency for it. So if I'm asking too much of both you, my deck, and myself, please say so, cause that'll rein me in.

Thank you so much!

The deck is more of a life gain deck than it is a control deck. You have a lot of removal, but that's all that makes it controlling.

Highest recommended card: Vile Consumption. This card is brutal in this deck if you don't have too many creatures.

Hallowed Burial is a highly underrated board wipe.

Card suggestions: Sphere of Safety, Approach of the Second Sun, Aura of Silence, Austere Command, Cleansing Nova, Damn, Darksteel Mutation, Doomskar, Epicure of Blood, Erebos's Intervention, Ghostly Prison, Infernal Grasp, Liesa, Shroud of Dusk, Narset, Parter of Veils, Propaganda, Rest in Peace, Righteous Cause, Rule of Law, Telepathy, Time Wipe, Trespasser's Curse, Utter End, Venser's Journal, Witch of the Moors

Mean/weird cards that I would probably play: AEther Barrier, Archmage Ascension, Death Match, Lightmine Field, Meishin, the Mind Cage, Overburden, Porphyry Nodes, Spreading Plague, Tainted AEther, Portcullis, Magus of the Moat, Magus of the Tabernacle, Silent Arbiter, Serene Master

*Obviously play what you want

Note: Brainstorm isn't modern legal

Your deck has 20 creatures that have payoff for drawing cards and casting spells, but only 17 actual spells. I would run 16 creatures tops and replace them with more instants/sorceries.

Archmage Ascension synergizes with all your card draw, but it's a complete nonbo with your card draw trigger effects like Chasm Skulker, Niv-Mizzet, Parun, and The Locust God. Also, it's really slow.

I'd also probably cut Kumena's Awakening because a conditional 4-mana draw an extra card each turn isn't that good.

For the spells, Radical Idea is bad. To replace Brainstorm you could maybe run the new cantrip we are getting in MID, Consider. Sinister Sabotage doesn't really cut it in modern, I'd suggest Counterspell, Archmage's Charm, and Spell Pierce. Expressive Iteration might also be good here, although it doesn't draw cards. Maybe Serum Visions.

you should add Ebony Owl Netsuke , Psychosis Crawler , Viseling , Black Vise , Iron Maiden , Uba Mask to stop them from using the counterspells they drew, Psychic Possession , Archmage Ascension is pretty cool too.

really punish your opponents for drawing tons of cards. make them really regret drawing kwains cards.
