Archetype of Finality

Enchantment Creature — Gorgon

Creatures you control have deathtouch.

Creatures your opponents control lose deathtouch and can't have or gain deathtouch.

My thoughts:

Wasn't underwhelming. A little disappointed Kellan was still naive even after spending all that time on Ravnica. I get it. Its his father. But when Kellan had to go searching the multiverse for him one would think there'd be enough sense to approach with caution. Jace being the big bad for this one was a nice twist. In reading the story I found it a little odd Vraska was conversing with Ashiok and not Malcolm and Breeches but since Jace was in disguise it makes sense. I liked how all the villains interacted with one another. As much as Rakdos allowing someone to ride him again after telling Gideon it wouldn't was a nice gag, I hope it doesn't become a recurring one. It would only take away from his menacing persona.
The epilogue was awesome for sending Jace and Vraska to Vryn, and explains Jace and Vraska's morality over the course of the story. However I hope whatever they have planned doesn't make him a permanent big bad.

About the cards:

I wanted Kellan to be another adventure card. That would have made a great commander clash. Hoefully the people at mtggoldfish do it anyway.

2 mana Jace. Leyline of Anticipation just made Jace Tribal dangerous. Speaking of Dangerous, Rest in Peace and Torpor Orb are now Standard legal due to The Big Score.

If you run a Flashback deck on Commander, Legacy or Vintage, be sure to find a spot for Forger's Foundrys. Once you cast the spell from the graveyard using the mana from this card, you can activate the non mana ability and turn it on into a combo loop.

You can tell from the art in Smuggler's Surprise someone visited Theros.

I think Vraska Joins Up will eventually provide redundancy for, or replace, Archetype of Finality in a lotta decks. Mainly due to mana costs.

I don't know where Deepmuck Desperado is going, but into at least one of my decks.

When building decks with the desert lands with the etb 1 damage triggers, if yer running black, be sure to consider Piranha Marsh.

If you build a commander deck around the new Eriette card be sure to add Willbreaker for redundancy.

No commander cards giving griffins, horses, pegususes and/or unicorns mount. Why did they even bother with it?

What is the point of having a plot ability that costs more than the spell's mana value?

Pharika, God of Affliction

Nemesis of Mortals

Archetype of Finality

Just for extra potency in the venom department (late game bombs for longer match ups).

Gleeock on Thantis the Warweaver

Thantis, the Warweaver is so open-ended. When I did build Thantis to care more about forcing unfavorable combat I leaned heavily into lifelink... so: Whip of Erebos, etc... This way I could be more aggressive with my vigilant commander while also heavily discouraging swing-wide in my direction, (I had some situations where it came down to 1v1 & a field of 1/1's would swing at me, grow Thantis, & actually gain me life for the crackback). One of my favorites for anti-voltron was Shiny Impetus. I never personally saw that much allure to deathtouchees or Archetype of Finality, I'd rather be trampling with my giant commander & lifelinking aggressively. With playtesting, my opponents were tapped out half the time & open for business, or they had chump blockers which were going to be dead anyway (deathtouch was lame either way). The only reason I stopped playing combat-focused Thantis is because my meta was so heavy on non-combat tactics (tapdown their own stuff, etc...) So I eventually changed over to Jund goodstuff & making a lifedrain token-army deck.

Tur on Challenging Maarika

I believe that you're committing too much to your theme. There are too many cards which do the same thing. You should cut down on the instant/sorcery fight cards to maybe 5-6 cards (that is ~10% of the deck):

I suggest choosing some from these cards: Bite Down, Bushwhack, Cartouche of Strength, Chandra's Ignition, Fall of the Hammer, Go for Blood, Master's Rebuke, Nature's Way, Prey Upon, Prizefight, Tail Swipe, Ulvenwald Tracker

In my opinion, the best ones are: Bushwhack, Cartouche of Strength, Chandra's Ignition, Nature's Way, Prey Upon, Prizefight, Tail Swipe

Fight on a stick should be considered: Gruul Ragebeast or Kogla, the Titan Ape

Deathtouch to this theme is nice, but you're going to be doing 7 damage upon each fight. It's unlikely a creature will survive that fight. Therefore, you can cut back on deathtouch, that is Archetype of Finality, Bow of Nylea, Vorpal Sword, and Falthis, Shadowcat Familiar. Basilisk Collar is still good because of the lifelink. Saryth, the Viper's Fang is still good because of hexproof.

Furthermore, I would cut cards which deal damage based on how much Maarika receives. It will mostly be 3-5 damage. Such as, Fiendlash.

Because the commander is Voltron it needs many keyword abilities: haste, trample, and hexproof should be your bread and butter (no shroud for this deck). Enchantments or equipment which yield those keyword abilities are great.

There are a few Voltron related cards which I would suggest: Fiery Emancipation, Jeska, Thrice Reborn, and Hatred can one shot an opponent.

I hope this helps!

Cuts:

I would cut Archetype of Finality and Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite. Even though they are great cards, they don‘t fit your theme and are pretty high in cmc

Swap:

Farewell instead of Merciless Eviction

Why using 3cmc counterspells if you can use Counterspell?

Gidgetimer on Do Monstrous effects count as …

Fleecemane Lion doesn't have the key word abilities hexproof and indestructible. It has an ability that grants those abilities. So, Kathril, Aspect Warper will not distribute counters from it.

The same is true for things that will have a keyword ability from an unconditional static ability at all times when they are on the battlefield. The Archetypes (Archetype of Endurance, Archetype of Finality, Archetype of Courage) do not have keyword abilities to distribute the keyword counters from.

Polaris on Question About Ezuri's Predation

The fights all happen together. No creatures die and no triggered abilities go on the stack until after you've created the Beast tokens and they've all fought things.

The fights happen as the card says. Each Beast gets paired with a different opponent's creature, then each pair fights. There's no fighting with multiple creatures, so if all you're doing is casting Ezuri's Predation with no other setup, you'll only kill 4 toughness or less creatures.

However, there are multiple ways you can increase the effectiveness of the spell with static effects. Beastmaster Ascension with seven quest counters will apply +5/+5 to all your creatures including the entering Beasts, making them 9/9s that will kill a lot more stuff. Archetype of Finality will have them enter with deathtouch, which means they'll kill everything that doesn't have indestructible. Eldrazi Monument will make them 5/5s with indestructible, so they'll at least survive fights with larger creatures, and so on.

You can also use Parallel Lives or similar to get more Beasts. Notably, the rulings cover this situation by pointing out that if you have more Beasts than opponents' creatures because of an effect like this, some of them won't have a "different creature" to fight, so the extra Beasts just won't fight anything.
