Mortlocke I did originally run Ajani, Valiant Protector in the deck but it was to slow. Ajani, Sleeper Agent does do what my deck wants to do his first ability helps draw cards or scry things to the bottom which is useful, his second simply lets me add counters which is always good, his ultimate I fear might be to slow since I would need to play 5 creatures to kill someone not counting proliferate triggers but I would think if I'm close to using it or if I do then I become the archenemy.

All in all I do not think he would be a bad add, since you can drop him for 3 mana with 2 loyalty counters and then scry or draw. atraxa helps speed him up, even if i never use this 3rd ability he synergized well. im thinking i might try swapping out Elite Scaleguard or Ghave, Guru of Spores for him.

TheStoneRaptor - I have a few suggestions I can share but keep in mind, I am by no means an expert so take all my advice/suggestions with a grain of salt.

  • You have a very high mana curve with a average CMC of 3.95..this is a very slow deck. Also to your disadvantage, you are not running much in terms of "interaction" beside Aim High + Plummet , which is not exactly efficient. Regardless of what you do here, you will need to likely lower your mana curve to either speed up the deck or add in more interactions.

  • You are running more than 60 cards, I would not recommend this as it is a trap...usually. Most decks are built around a few cards that you want to draw every game for the deck to work at its best, adding in more cards just lowers the probability of drawing the cards you really want.

  • It seems like you have a few themes with this deck. I see Essence Warden so think Soul Sisters...I see some +1/+1 counter synergy...AND I see token creation. I would pick a theme and really hone in on it. The deck will run much smoother.

  • Some suggestions for trimming down the mana curve. Darien, King of Kjeldor, Emmara Tandris, Iridescent Hornbeetle, Mycoloth are all almost at least 5 CMC and create tokens in some manner. I would recommend removing most of these cards and replacing them with something similar. Some great options include Brimaz, King of Oreskos, Esika's Chariot, Anointed Procession, Parallel Lives, Intangible Virtue, etc. The same goes for Planeswalkers...you have Ajani, Valiant Protector who throws around +1/+1 counters and Elspeth, Sun's Champion. I would take these out and maybe replace with maybe Basri Ket or just drop them entirely.

Hopefully something I mentioned you will find helpful. If seeing something similar might help, I do run a +1/+1 counter deck (I'll Raise you +1/+1...) and specifically a cat theme token deck (Feline Feelings. Take a look at those for some inspriation. They are not perfect by any means by they are fun an effective.

Good luck and happy brewing!

See, the problem with specifically me suggesting cuts is that you and I seem to have much different playstyles. I am not big on Planeswalkers and like to keep my mana curve super low to the ground, especially with a mana hungry commander like Marath. I can tell you about objectively strong cards for your mana base though, and I tried to just do that.

If I were pressed and had to make suggestions; for just the first four sorceries I would say both 6-mana Ajanis, a basic Forest, and a basic Plains. For all 12 of my suggestions and in descending order from first card cut to last so that you can take any number and have my suggestions for cuts:

Ajani Unyielding

Forest

Ajani, Valiant Protector

Plains

Woodland Mystic

Zhur-Taa Druid

Domri, Anarch of Bolas

Druid of the Anima

Jiang Yanggu, Wildcrafter

Somberwald Sage

Incubation Druid

Alpine Meadow

Many of these other cuts are also ramp, but that is because your Land+Ramp number is pretty close to what I like after cutting the two Ajanis. Going with sorceries and artifacts will protect you a little better from sweepers since your mana base will be able to survive a Wrath of God and you would be more likely to be able to recover. The artifacts will still leave you weak to Austere Command, but you are less likely to be collateral damage.

Another switch I would just make straight up is Archetype of Aggression in for Aggressive Mammoth in keeping with me liking to keep a mana curve lower.

I don't play magic competetively and dont plan on it any time in the future. That is a rabbit hole I learned to stay out of after my brief stint in yugioh regionals at 13. I'm mostly just looking to make a new deck for casual matches with friends while drinking heavily.

Back in 2019 I randomly decided to buy the ajani planeswalker deck, and managed to pull Ajani Unyielding in addition to the included Ajani, Valiant Protector I was wondering if there was anything I could make that's uses both of these guys. Central strategies of the deck will revolve around the ajanis, so life gain and +1/+1 counters alongside some burn like Fling. This wont be played at any tournaments so banned cards are perfectly okay.

Cards I'm looking to use currently include Dragonlord Dromoka, the ajanis, Ridgescale Tusker, and Prey Upon. If anybody has some good reccomendations for combos, I'd appreciate it.

Soul Warden / Soul's Attendant are good for pumping your Ajani's Pridemate .

Also Twinblade Paladin could be good. (i don't have any experience playing this kind of deck, although i can still see ways to improve it.)

I would also consider taking out Ajani's Aid , and Ajani, Valiant Protector , and replacing it with something like Squadron Hawk . Squadron Hawk will get you out more creatures to trigger Soul Warden to pump Ajani's Pridemate if you decide to add Soul Warden or Soul's Attendant .

I would probably skip Ajani, Valiant Protector . Of the versions, I'd go with Ajani, Adversary of Tyrants or Ajani, Mentor of Heroes . I wouldn't have too many walkers in there though, it seems to be an aggro deck first, it won't hold up long enough to get tons of value out of them.
