Rhadamanthus on what is modal?

A modal spell is a spell with an effect that says "Choose [some number] - [list of choices]" where you make the modal choices as you cast it. Spells like Simic Charm or Cryptic Command are modal spells. Aether Channeler has a triggered ability with a modal effect, but Aether Channeler itself as a spell is not modal because you don't make any modal choices as you cast it. Similarly, Umezawa's Jitte has an activated ability with a modal effect but the Jitte itself is not a modal spell and Jace, the Mind Sculptor has a bunch of different activated abilities but doesn't have anything modal about it.

After some more testing, I felt some changes are needed.

Rocco, Street Chef works way better than expected. I feel it has to be in the deck. Even with it forcing a green mana requirement in a Jeskai colors deck that's already struggling with color consistency. It's that crazy.

To try to make it fit better, I swapped out 2xEdgewall Inn and 2xMishra's Foundry with 2xPlaza of Heroes and 2 Restless lands (Restless Bivouac/Restless Anchorage). I wasn't needing the adventure recycle from the Inn in testing but I was getting reasonable color mana value from Plaza. The Foundry is stronger in a creature land role than the Restless lands. I usually find myself with little mana left open to animate a land, so Foundry worked while Restless lands are usually too expensive, but the color fixing on the Restless lands are helping. It's a tradeoff.

I also feel like more needed to be done for mana consistency. Too many mana screw hands were showing up on 23 lands. I tried out Buried Treasure and they're working. They help ramp out a 5-cost spell (especially Quintorius Kand) or mana fix for a Rocco or one of the double-color spells, and the Discover 5 on the back end also flows naturally with the deck's flow. I took out 1xGeological Appraiser and 1xVenerable Warsinger. The Appraiser is maybe the weakest card even though the Discover 3 on cast ETB is absolutely necessary. And the Warsinger is good but getting multiples out tends to stall your gameplan in ways that put you in bad situations.

Lastly, tests with Aether Channeler were giving good results. It leveled up the tempo defensive game that feeds into successfully reaching for a couple more cards/turns before things get too bleak. In tests, that was consistently exactly what the deck needed to stabilize from early disadvantages from faster opponents. I took out the Imodane's Recruiter and reduced Ojer Pakpatiq, Deepest Epoch  Flip to 1x to fit a couple in. The Recruiter is explosive the turn it shows up but almost a complete blank after that. You almost always prefer to Discover into a Channeler instead of a Recruiter. Pakpatiq does struggle some by how instants need to be cast from hand to get the fun rebound tricks online, (and becomes worse with Rocco), so 2x was probably too much. But I still want access to it to get cheap virtues out.

So many new exploratory bant commander applications, this is one of the combos I was most excited for, but really not into the UB stuff so gonna wait until they have mtg cards. Also your last comment is right about Ahau as far as I know.

For suggestions:

Surprised Seedborn Muse isn't on the list. Always good to have a backup plan if your commander is removed a lot, and more importantly SB Muse untaps all of your lands each turn. Without having enough mana flash alone often falls short in multiplayer games. Seedborn Muse will also help get your commanders out in a single round. To this end more cheap mana dorks would help like Delighted Halfling or Gyre Sage because they will untap each step with your commander.

You have a lot of things that give counters but not a lot of payoff, cards like Abzan Falconer and Zegana, Utopian Speaker come to mind.

Big fan of Inspiring Call in counter decks too.

I have a Bant token deck that has a lot of good small-guys-who-make-other-guys type cards like Aether Channeler, if you want to check it out for suggestions. Can't Catch Me, I'm the GingerBant Man! [Primer]

I see March of multitudes and flurry of wings, I've tried to run a lot of cards like that but I've found they almost always want to be played later in the game. If you want to have smaller pieces set up for before your commanders come out, cards like Aether channeler and mana dorks will go a long way. Creatures that make creatures will work better with the convoke theme as well. Very fun and original looking deck!

Hey! Coming over from Reddit to give some advice.

First off, some overarching themes that I notice:

  • Draw vs Card Advantage - A lot of the cards in your "Draw" category don't actually provide any impactful draw, only scrying and cantrips. I'm an enormous fan of Fell Stinger and Thought Sponge. Easily repeatable draw effects that dump cards in your hand. Scry isn't useful unless you're drawing a ton of cards or are doing some topdeck manipulation.

  • Your creatures are too big - Marchesa appreciates small bodies with big effects rather than big bodies with meh effects. For this reason, I would take out Combustible Gearhulk, Vindictive Lich, Vengeful Ancestor, and Gyruda, Doom of Depths. Playing lots of small, cheaper bodies lets your deck fly under the radar until it pops off. It will also give you more targets for Imperial Recruiter.

  • Aristocrats style - Marchesa doesn't play like your typical aristocrats deck, Blood Artist isn't very effective when you're only sacrificing 2-3 creatures a turn. It's also counterintuitive to Dethrone. Abusing ETB and LTB effects is more important than slowly draining opponents

  • Not enough counter distribution - You only have 5 cards under counters and they're all either situational or restrictive. Drop some Thran Vigil type cards in there and you'll go far

Overall, you're too reliant on creatures for draw, removal, etc. Run some efficient draw and removal spells

Next up, cards I recommend removing. I've playtested most of these and they're not nearly as impactful as they seem.

  • Blood Artist - Covered this above, you don't want to gain life
  • Combustible Gearhulk - Opponents will often just take the damage early game and late game you do NOT want to be spending 6 mana on a 6/6 with no impactful ETB.
  • Vindictive Lich - An alright card, not fantastic though. I'm very pressed for 4 drops in my deck so it didn't make the cut.
  • Vengeful Ancestor - Not a very impactful card. You're running Kardur, Doomscourge so this card is just overshadowed.
  • Gyruda, Doom of Depths - 6 mana to maybe cheat in one creature? Not a huge fan. If you want to replace it with a grave robber effect Puppeteer Clique is better. Still not fantastic, it didn't make the cut in my deck
  • Aether Channeler - A fine card, the mode selection is okay. I'm not in love with the effects it gives though
  • Morbid Opportunist - Only one draw a turn? Blasphemy
  • Woe Strider Free sac outlets are nice, but I find I get overrun with them when I have more than 5 in a deck. Also more expensive just to scry? Not a fan
  • Dauthi Voidwalker Will generate so much hate. Unless you can fend off your opponents don't run it
  • Faerie Artisans Not the kind of stealing Marchesa likes, tokens aren't the name of the game here. Something like Zealous Conscripts will take you much further
  • Phantom Steed Same as above, tokens are nice but this isn't a great card
  • Ravenous Chupacabra Too much mana for removal. Black and blue have much cheaper options

There are more that I personally wouldn't run, but that's up to how you like to play your deck.

Now for some cards I would include in every Marchesa deck

  • Thran Vigil - Allows you to immediately sac creatures that come back + an extra layer of protection
  • Uncivil Unrest - Same as above but you can also give haste to fresh casts. Double damage doesn't hurt
  • Fell Stinger - Repeatable, powerful draw on a deathtouch body
  • Thought Sponge - Incredible draw engine. Sac it on opponents turns every time it enters and you'll draw AT LEAST 6 cards a turn cycle.
  • Iron Apprentice - Great 1 drop, can distribute counters if you're having trouble and is sacrifice fodder
  • Rakdos Cackler - sacrifice fodder
  • Flayer of the Hatebound - This card gets a bad rap but it's great in Marchesa
  • Herald of Secret Streams - Wincon alert! This card sneaks under the radar until you hit someone with 25 unblockable damage
  • The Ozolith - Expensive, but who doesn't want to keep their counters for 1 mana!

Of course, please take a look at my deck if you need inspiration. It's pretty casual, but the synergies can be backbreaking if your opponents don't keep you in check. I also have a ton of cards in my maybeboard that I'm considering or have saved for later.

multimedia on Muldrotha: Budget Elemental Tribe!

Hey, it sucks when opponents gang up on you, Disk and Deed unfortunately have that negative effect. At least you got to see Urza eliminated before you lost :)

If playing Disk and Deed then think of everything else in your deck as expendable, doesn't matter if all your stuff dies because all opponents will too. Muldrotha gives you this flexibility and by adding totem armor effects then Muldrotha can be saved from Disk or Deed if she's enchanted before they pop.

You're slowly removing Elementals making your deck Elementals in flavor, but not much else for the tribe or game play. Risen Reef is the only reason here be Elemental tribal and while it's a good card, it's not good enough to stick to Elementals.

  • Cavalier of Night, Cavalier of Gales, Cavalier of Thorns
  • Risen Reef
  • Mulldrifter, Foundation Breaker, Shriekmaw

These Elementals are good because for what they do there's not other better budget cards that are not an Elemental that could replace them. Playing an Elemental because it's an Elemental instead of a better budget card is not worth it when you don't have much Elemental tribal synergy. Some examples:

Sac outlets are how you can abuse Muldrotha ability with creatures, casting the same creature from your graveyard over many turns. Sac outlets can do more for Muldrotha strategy then some Elementals.

If you're against Eldrazi Titans then consider an exile creature effect because indestructible doesn't stop it and the Titan is gone for good, doesn't ever enter the graveyard after it's removed.

These are three options, Tear is best because kicked it can exile any nonland permanent. Resculpt and Shift are only two mana to exile a creature. The drawback of your opponent getting a creature afterwards is minimal because you'll be removing something much better. Pair any of these instants with Eternal Witness for a repeatable effect with Muldrotha. Either one of these could replace Return to Nature?

Another budget way to deal with an Eldrazi Titan is to it steal from your opponent and then wreck that player with annihilator. Steal a player's Commander and keep control it until Sower is removed. Stealing Sheoldred can be nasty since reanimation is quite good with Muldrotha. Sower is better because with any sac outlet that can sac a creature you can sac your opponent's creature you stole, it dies goes back to that player's graveyard or Command Zone and then you can sac Sower to repeat with Muldrotha. Sower could replace Forgotten Ancient?

Fauna adds a creature toolbox repeatable effect that can also fuel graveyard strategies for Muldrotha. The toolbox can be helpful because you have several creatures who are much better than the others. Fuana is also good with Wonder and Brawn as creatures to discard who want to be in your graveyard. Fauna could replace Icon of Ancestry?

Really consider cutting some basic Forests for more budget dual lands that have interaction with Forests or lots of basic lands? The allied Check lands have been reprinted in latest set Dominaria Remastered, now is the best time to get them since each are down to less than $4.
