X damage divided with Battlefield Thaumaturge?

Asked by SorcerersBone 9 years ago

If I had the thaumaturge on the field and were to use something like Aurelia's Fury targetting X creatures on the field, could I divide the damage so that I deal 0 damage to all creatures and deal X damage to my opponent's face? For just RW? What if I had two Thaumaturges, could I potentially double that?

Always check the Gatherer rulings before posting a question.

1/24/2013: You announce the value of X and how the damage will be divided as part of casting Aurelia's Fury. Each chosen target must receive at least 1 damage.

Whenever you divide something among targets, each target must receive at least one of whatever is being divided. You can't target a creature and assign 0 damage to it.

Now, having two Battlefield Thaumaturges would allow you to declare, say, X=10, declare five target creatures and target opponent, pay , and deal 1 damage to each of the five creatures and 5 damage to the opponent.

Battlefield Thaumaturge will still reduce the cost of the spell for each target but unfortunately it doesn't work this way you want. You need to divide it so that each target receives at least 1 damage.

Refer to the first Gatherer ruling for Aurelia's Fury here

"You announce the value of X and how the damage will be divided as part of casting Aurelia's Fury. Each chosen target must receive at least 1 damage."
