Interaction between Orvar, the All-Form and cumulative upkeep

Asked by CamraMaan 9 months ago

Say I have Glacial Chasm and Orvar, the All-Form in play, and the Chasm has two counters on it going into my upkeep. When my upkeep begins, the cumulative upkeep triggers and puts another counter on Glacial Chasm... do I then have the time to target it with an instant, making a copy of it, and then sacrifice it to the new Glacial Chasm, avoiding having to pay the cumulative upkeep or sacrifice it for not paying? Thanks in advance!

At the beginning of your upkeep everything that triggers at the beginning of your upkeep (including upkeep and cumulative upkeep triggers) will be put on the stack. There is a round of priority before each object on the stack resolves. So you can in fact make a copy before you have to pay the cumulative upkeep cost.

Just a side note in case you run into someone who wants to rules lawyer, you can not do anything between the counter going on and the cost needing paid. But placing the counter and paying the upkeep cost are part of the same ability. What you are actually doing is making a copy of the Glacial Chasm on your upkeep before the age counter is placed. The copy won't have been on the battlefield at the beginning of the upkeep, so it will not have a trigger to place a counter and pay until your next upkeep.

Ahhh, makes sense, replace it with the new one before counters go on. Much appreciated!
