Interaction between Nyxbloom Ancient and Loam Dryad

Asked by CamraMaan 1 year ago

I'm curious if Loam Dryad will "trigger" Nyxbloom Ancient twice, since I would be tapping two creatures as the cost to generate one mana of any color? Therefore it would generate nine mana, not three? The only part that has me unsure is the singular "it" portion on Nyxbloom, which makes me wonder if it only counts for the card generating the mana. Thanks in advance!

I believe you only get the trigger once, and so three mana. The additional cost of tapping another creature is not part of the “tapping for mana” clause.

Specifically, this is covered in the Gatherer rulings for Nyxbloom Ancient, where it explicitly states that it only checks for the tap symbol itself.

From Gatherer:

You're “tapping a permanent for mana” only if you're activating a mana ability of that permanent that includes the Tap symbol in its cost. A mana ability produces mana as part of its effect.

If an ability triggers “whenever you tap” something for mana and produces mana, that triggered mana ability won't be affected by Nyxbloom Ancient.

I forgot to check the Gatherer rulings. My fault. Much appreciated!
