Gaining control of a god

Asked by CaptainCaveman 9 years ago

Last night at FNM tournament during one of my matches i decided (don't ask me why to gain control of my opponents Nylea, God of the Hunt which he himself had bestowed with a Nighthowler through the use of a bestowed Hypnotic Siren .

Easy enough , i gain control of of a Nylea, God of the Hunt with a bestowed Nighthowler and Hypnotic Siren . Comes over to my side of the battleground where i do not have the devotion requirement to keep Nylea, God of the Hunt a creature. What should happen at this point.?

I argued that i would retain my Hypnotic Siren and the Nighthowler and that my opponent would regain control of the Nylea, God of the Hunt .

What we did. I kept my Hypnotic Siren and he got back Nylea, God of the Hunt and Nighthowler as two individual cards on the battlefield.

What REALLY should have happened.

Your opponent was correct. When you gained control of Nylea, it ceased to be a creature, which caused Nighthowler and Hypnotic Siren to become unattached from Nylea. Because you never gained control of Nighthowler , it is still conrolled by your opponent, Nylea returns to your opponent, because Hypnotic Siren is no longer attached to it, and you get to keep your Siren as a creature.

When you took control of Nylea, God of the Hunt you never controlled Nighthowler at all. He was attached to Nylea, but controlled by your opponent. When Nylea ceased to be a creature Nighthowler and Hypnotic Siren both fell off under their respective controller's control and Nylea reverted to her owner's control since there were no effects changing it.
