Exile insted of put into grave, triggers dies?

Asked by Kryna 9 years ago

Hello

I have Anafenza, the Foremost and Grim Haruspex and Runeclaw Bear.

If my Runeclaw Bear dies doest it trigger Grim Haruspex ability?

Yes it does as Anafenza, the Foremost only targets opponents creatures not yours.

Ok here from gatherer:

While Anafenza is on the battlefield, abilities that trigger whenever a nontoken creature your opponent owns dies wont trigger, as that card will never reach that players graveyard. (Token creatures will still go to the graveyard briefly before ceasing to exist.)

Quote from MtG Comprehensive Rules

700.6. The term dies means is put into a graveyard from the battlefield. It is used only when referring to creatures.

Anafenza, the Foremost only effect creatures that would go to an opponent's graveyard (it doesn't target so creatures with hexproof, shroud, or protection from one of Anafenza's qualities will still be affected).

If your opponent had a Grim Haruspex theirs wouldn't trigger because Anafenza replaces the act of going to the graveyard so that it never happens. Also of note is that an opponent's Sidisi, Brood Tyrant's second ability will never trigger since creature cards never go from their library to their graveyard.

Why tokens go to graveyard when Anafenza, the Foremost is on battlefield?

"While Anafenza is on the battlefield, abilities that trigger whenever a nontoken creature your opponent owns dies wont trigger, as that card will never reach that players graveyard. (Token creatures will still go to the graveyard briefly before ceasing to exist.)"

Token creatures will also be exiled, as they are creatures. As soon as they hit the Exile zone they will cease to exist.

Token creatures are not creature cards. Anafenza, the Foremost says "If a creature card would..." not "If a creature would..." If something within MTG refers to a "card" it means an official Magic card. Token cards look similar to Magic cards but are not Magic cards.

@Gidgetimer:
Yes, you are completely right.
I had not seen it said creature card.

It's interesting how it doesn't say non-token, but this way non-creatures-turned-creature, such as Sarkhan, the Dragonspeaker or Dimir Keyrune will still go to the graveyard.

@Kirtanei: Actually;

"Anafenza's last ability cares only what the card would be in the zone its moving from, not what it would be in the graveyard. For example, if a land card you control becomes a creature due to an effect and then dies, the land card will be exiled. But if a creature card with bestow is an Aura when it would be put into the graveyard, it ends up in the graveyard."

It's only tokens that goes to the graveyard through Anafenza, the Foremost's ability.

It's a weird one...
