Does Ajani trigger Heroic?
Asked by Liszt 9 years ago
If I have Favored Hoplite and let's say Ajani Goldmane, does it work?
If I "cast" Ajani and then target Hoplite with the ability I do everything required, right? But then it would only work the turn I cast Ajani in so it woulnd't really make that much sense either. Thanks for clarifying!

When you cast Ajani, he is a planeswalker spell that does not target anything. Permanents (creatures, enchantments, planeswalkers, artifacts) are spells when they are cast and until they resolve. Once they resolve, they become their respective type of permanent on the battlefield.
The ability that targets the Hoplite is an activated ability on the planeswalker permanent, Ajani. He is not a spell at this time. It is the ability that targets the Hoplite, not a spell, so Heroic is not triggered.

Favored Hoplite's (and any other card's) Heroic ability specifies that it triggers "whenever you cast a spell that targets it". Ajani Goldmane's abilities are activated abilities, not spells, and therefore do not trigger Heroic.
