Does a tapped Elvish Mystic count to devotion?

Asked by towb 9 years ago

If I tap an Elvish Mystic to pay for half of the cost of Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx 's second ability, does that Elvish Mystic still count towards devotion to green? and would it be the same for Voyaging Satyr if you use it to untap and retap Nykthos?

Yes, whether a creature is tapped doesn't affect the symbols in their cost, so it doesn't affect cards that check for devotion. This is independant of the card, as long as you control that card, the card is in play, and it is not morphed or something of the sort. Basically, you see a mana symbol on a permanent means it counts towards devotion.

Yes, devotion only counts the number of colored mana symbols in the cost of permanents you control. It doesn't matter if the permanent is taped or not.

Is there a ruling or statement somewhere that made you think you needed untapped permanents to count for devotion?

No, I just wasn't sure because you'd essentially be getting 2 mana from Elvish Mystic in a turn if you played it this way, which seemed weird to me. also I'm new to the game so still working things out aha :)
