Do land ETB effects go on the stack from a Warp World?

Asked by Aethaleon 9 years ago

A player plays Warp World and everyone does the steps and out of my cards come Thespian's Stage and Scorched Ruins, along with other cards and other basic lands. Does Scorched Ruins ETB effect go on the stack along with everything else following the resolution of Warp World? Can I copy the Scorched Ruins with Thespian's Stage and not have to sack Thespian's Stage and just sack the Scorched Ruins; since Thespian's Stage doesn't get the ETB effect?

If the land effects don't go on the stack, how would they resolve after Warp World?

The cards revealed by Warp World all enter the battlefield, so anything that triggers upon entering the battlefield will trigger.

Scorched Ruins will trigger and go on the stack, requiring you to sacrifice two untapped lands or sacrifice it. You could definitely have the Thespian's Stage copy the Scorched Ruins while the Ruins' ability was still on the stack, meaning you could make the Stage into the Ruins and then elect to sacrifice the Ruins rather than two untapped lands. You would not need to sacrifice anything to the Stage as it became a Ruins because it has already entered the battlefield.

Scorched Ruins does not have an ETB ability.

This is the current Oracle text of Scorched Ruins:

If Scorched Ruins would enter the battlefield, sacrifice two untapped lands instead. If you do, put Scorched Ruins onto the battlefield. If you don't, put it into its owner's graveyard.

This ability defines a replacement effect that applies as Scorched Ruins would enter the battlefield. Because you control no other lands at the time this replacement effect would apply (the revealed lands will be put onto the battlefield simultaneously, so none of them are on the battlefield before Scorched Ruins would enter), you cannot choose to sacrifice two lands. You must put Scorched Ruins into its owner's graveyard.

Just since there are two conflicting answers, Epochalyptik is correct. Devonin would be correct if Scorched Ruins functioned as printed, but the errata it has to preserve its originally intended functionality makes that not the case.

Scorched Ruins never even enters the battlefield off of a Warp World.

Is this the same case for Lotus Vale? What if a bounce land entered as well, like Golgari Rot Farm? Could Thespian's Stage copy either of these successfully after a Warp World? Or do both of these lands get auto sacked?

Always check the Oracle text on Gatherer (or on magiccards.info ) for current card wordings. Lotus Vale has errata similar to Scorched Ruins, and for the same reason (see below). Golgari Rot Farm does not, so that one you can copy after a Warp World using Thespian's Stage, before the Rot Farm returns a land (possibly itself) to hand.

The reason for the different functionality is that when Scorched Ruins and Lotus Vale were printed, you couldn't use a card's own ability while its enters-the-battlefield trigger was on the stack. When that rule was changed, the Ruins and Vale (and Lake of the Dead) received errata to largely preserve their existing functionality and prevent them from instantly becoming far, far more powerful than was ever intended. Golgari Rot Farm and its ilk did not need such errata, because they were printed after that rule change and with it - and potentially associated power level issues - in mind. Kind of weird that two cards with similar printed text work so differently, but that's just sometimes the case with old cards.
