Brudiclad plus Antiquities war.

Asked by JoltsOfEnergy 5 years ago

Hi there. I have a question regarding the new commander Brudiclad, Telchor Engineer. His ability makes my tokens into copies of other tokens I control. How does this interact with cards that change power/toughness until end of turn like the last chapter of The Antiquities War.

Let's say I have a few servo tokens when the antiquities war goes to chapter 3. I then play Bruniclad and when I go to combat he makes a 2/1 myr token. I then make all my tokens become copies of one of the now 5/5 servo tokens.

When my turn ends, what happens to the power of my tokens? I feel like they would all stay 5/5, right? Except for the original one who would go back to being a 1/1. However, I am really not sure this is how it would work out. Can anybody clarify this for me?

Thank you very much.

I'm pretty sure all your tokens would go back to what they were, because the antiquities war card is making them 5/5 until end of turn, because it affects all artifacts you control, instead of just the ones you had before, or that it could have made. it would work with brudiclad if it was only affecting a number of tokens, instead of all artifacts you control. even if you made your tokens something better like a copy of any other creature, if they were artifacts they would return to what they normally are at end of turn.

The Myr token would turn into a 1/1 Servo, not a 5/5, and all the tokens would be 1/1 Servos at the end of the turn.

A copy effect only copies what's written on the card, and in the case of tokens, it only copies the original set of characteristics given to the token when it was created. It won't copy the results of any other effects changing the characteristics of the token. In your example, all of your tokens will be changed into Servos. The ones that were already affected by The Antiquities War will still be affected by it, and they'll be 5/5, but the ones that weren't yet on the battlefield when the Chapter III ability resolved will only be 1/1. The effect of the War will wear off at the end of the turn, and they'll all go back to being 1/1.

From the release notes:

https://magic.wizards.com/en/articles/archive/feature/commander-2018-edition-release-notes-2018-07-27

"Brudiclad copies only the values defined as the original token was created (unless that token is copying something else; see below). It doesn't copy whether that token is tapped or untapped, whether it as any counters on it or any Auras and Equipment attached to it, or any non-copy effects that have changed its power, toughness, types, color, or so on."

So Rhadamanthus is correct. The new Myr token would become a 1/1, not a 5/5, and the Saga effect would wear off at the end of turn.

Ok that makes sense, thanks for clarifying it. It's good that I know it now before I make the deck then have it be a discussion later.
