Custom Cards forum

Hello, Design Team! I was wondering if you guys wanted to take a crack at doing the mechanics of a particular card I'd like to see in our Negashard set at one point.

I loved that Conflux had Thornling , in tradition of Morphling and Torchling . Now, I imagine WotC will actually make the other two colors themselves at one point in time, but why not try our hand at it?

We could have either a white one or a black one. Traditionally a 3/3, CMC of 3ColorColor, 5 abilities, (Three 1 color, two 1 colorless).

Interested? Contest worthy perhaps? Do both for kicks? I just thought it would be kind of cool to make small requests of each other's teams like this to foster more interproject working.

This may be good as a contest. Though that doesn't mean we cant take a crack at it. Also i feel like we may want to wait, till we do a set with either white or black in it...seing that right now the color we are doing IS the color of the three _lings

Charmbreaker Dveils strikes me as a potentially great card, it gets +4/0 until the end of the turn when ever you cast a sorcery or instant then you can retrieve one at the begging of each upkeep. I tried it in m blue red unblockable the idea being you cast a Ghostform or Teleportal with one or two more cheap cards and wing for 12/16 direct hit. But problem is as he has 6 mana its a late game card and when I could summon him he usually died as my opponent would have a Cancel or Doom Blade waiting and Id have no mana left to play a counter spell. Ive thought of making a black red so I could use Heartless Summoning and some trample enchainments or Seismic Stomp but then if heartless summoning isn't drawn or gets destroyed that plan kinda goes down the drain.

anyhow suggestions please

Maybe ramp into and early Quicksilver Amulet and cheat him out... or just ramp into the Charmbreaker Devils itself, r/b has enough solid ramp spells to help.

In my experience Charmbreaker Devils is a win condition for a control deck with red. There are generally better options, but the devils are super easy on the wallet.

what you do is just, ya know... be control until you get him out, then, when he's ready to attack throw a few spells about or what have you and deal lethal in a single hit.

also he recurs your counter spells and such, which is nice.

The problem with Charmbreaker Devils is that you can play Kiln Fiend and Nivix Cyclops for less mana and do the same thing. The 4/4 body isn't relevant when you want to chain spells together and swing for lethal all in one turn, nor is the ability to get an instant or sorcery back.

If he was a 3/3 for four, or even a 2/2, he'd be much stronger. Right now, he's just a bit too overpriced. IMO he can only fit into an EDH deck where his size and abilities are more important, such as a deck with Melek, Izzet Paragon as the general.

If you can control what's in your graveyard (perhaps with something like Relic of Progenitus ) you could use it to win with Time Warp .

If you want to attempt that kind of strategy personally i'd say go R/U and use Nivix Cyclops and/or Wee Dragonauts with tons of 1 or 2 cmc instances or sorceries and a good amount of counterspell backup.

If you really want to use Charmbreaker Devils though you could use Young Pyromancer + Battle Hymn and gain tons of tokens to possibly get him out t4. There's also the various ramp spells in red like Desperate Ritual , Geosurge , Infernal Plunge , Pyretic Ritual etc (there's also Rite of Flame and Seething Song but both are banned in modern if that's the format you wanted to use for this deck). Also you could build up a bit of red devotion and use Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx to get him out quicker.

the dodge and burn deck from DOTP14 is a good example where you can use devils, mostly its a counterburn deck with lots of instants/sorceries and having so many lets you pump u devils indredibly large as to win in one turn.

its a good example of how to make a counterburn deck, but it doesnt neccesarily mean you have to copy it card for card.

Charmbreaker is actually a main wincon of my Riku EDH deck, though admittedly it usually involves many Charmbreakers and a Time Warp .
