Mainboard Updates v.1 —Jan. 1, 2024

After a discussion with another user and some research, I'm thinking I can detail the changes best below:

  • Haakon, Stromgald Scourge comes out of the mainboard in favor of more streamlined pieces such as Stoneforge Mystic.

  • Diabolic Intent is pretty powerful in terms of just fetching whatever we happen to be looking for. Even in a match 2 sense, where you could be sideboarding in removal, etc.

  • Nasty End wasn't a bad card to have in the list, and certainly could return but I find the valuable replacement pieces more pertinent. I chose Diabolic Intent for more focused retrieval efforts.

  • Steelshaper's Gift became redundant to a fault after I included Stoneforge Mystic so it comes out of the list for faster actions.

  • Forge Anew got a reduction in presence because the inclusion of Shadowspear is back-breaking for its utility.

  • Athreos, God of Passage is just too damn good to pass up for Indestructible recurrence for my creature combo pieces.. that rinse repeat fetching my combo.

Overall, the mana value of the deck has dropped below 2, to 1.70.

I am now considering lowering my land-count to 18. I would only do this in favor of including copies of Nasty End, should draw relevance become important again.

I really like the deck concept. I may be wrong but how do you cast haakon? It needs to be in the gy first and you have no discard outlet

Putting in a few incidental discard outlet will probably increase the decks power

Also I'd recommend upgrading lifelink to either

Shadowspear, Basilisk Collar (also provides death touche which also works with ping effects) or if your on a budget Poet's Quill as it tutors mana fixing or anything removal on curve.

The reason being is they are all be tutored for with steel shapers gift.

If also consider Urza's Saga as again it can tutor for any part of your combo (except paladin)

amicdeep You're right about both parts of that, and I agree about all of your suggestions. I apologize because originally when I crafted this list, neither Shadowspear or Urza's Saga had made the scene. I think they're perfect for the build.

Haakon didn't have it detailed here but I did have something to handle that. Uncertain of what that card was now.

amicdeep I appreciate the reminder about Basilisk Collar and truthfully you could pop out the Haakon slot for more consistency. His inclusion is mostly for the certainty of the draw from Nasty End, but some switch around could definitely improve how well this deck functions.
