Milestones, Primer Refinement —June 4, 2016

With nearly 9000 views, and 95 Upvotes, I'm proud to say that the deck just hit the #1 deck rank mark today. Additionally, this is now the #1 rated Gitrog Monster deck on the site, and the 67th rated EDH deck on the site. Very exciting.

To celebrate, some additions and visual swank has been added to the primer.

Thanks for all the interaction T/O, please keep it coming.

There is a lot more combo potential in this deck than just the discarding dakmor salvage. A lot of pieces that work well individually can give you infinite mana, creature tokens, draw, etc. Focus around drownyard temple as your secondary combo enabler. Running the lotus cobra or amulet of vigor lets nephalia make a mana when it comes out. Bloodghast, titania, or rampaging baloths makes a creature, ashnods altar/phyrexian altar sac creature for mana. All of these pieces work by themselves for value, but together and with multiple enablers in one or more category allows you to go infinite very easily. With one enabler in each category you at least get infinite draw/landfall/death triggers. It's a grew combo that uses a lot of cards that are great on their own. Also if running worm harvest I include a westvale abbey. And yo sac your drownyard use zuran orb or squandered resources.

Is there any reason for not to use Bazaar of Bagdad other than budget restriction?

Bazaar could be good... I haven't tested it simply because I haven't needed it, but yes, I could see it being quite useful, although not essential

Pardon my ignorance but what is a "Primer" ?

May 28, 2016 10:46 a.m.

Guerte says... #8

lodgehn: A primer is basically a guide to the deck. Tells you how to pilot it, known synergies and combos. It's used to help newer people to the deck on how it works.

Forgive me if I am wrong, but isn't the point of Devoted Druid + Quillspike to have them in the graveyard with Necrotic Ooze in play, not to have them in play together? If you don't want to run them that is great, but why adress plan "b" for their use instead of the more common use?

Brawn grants trample, not forestwalk.

Arcane Spyglass Reads: - Sacrifice a land, draw 2 cards with Froggy out on the field.

Insane value, with card draw!

zephramtripp Thanks, I missed that error. Next time, please cite WHERE you found an error though, so I can correct it quickly.

Gidgetimer You are correct that Necrotic Ooze does work that way. I had forgotten that aspect when I decided to cut them. That said, it's easier to explain what Devoted Druid + Quillspike do together than what they do and then how they can be used with Necrotic Ooze etc, etc. I am making some modifications in the next few days to the list, so may add this combo back in. I'm running more Dredge cards than I was before, and am finding that I am more set on comboing off than I had originally intended to be, so I think I'll be making changes accordingly.

Vladimara Thanks for the suggestion. Arcane Spyglass definitely fits the theme of the deck. I'm not sure that it's right for this particular build, as I'm already pretty happy with the list, but I will keep it in mind, and add it to the list of potential cards

I built a deck very similiar to this, the first game I ever played was turn 4 wild mongrel, turn 5 gitrog, swing mongrel, no blocks for the 2/2? discard Dakmor Salvage... aaand you're dead. It was great

All Glory To The Mighty Hypnotoad! Loving the deck. You're primer really got me into wanting to get this deck working the best it can. I feel like the deck's high comboing potential is its big selling point, so I've focused more on that and less with big grind cards. To me, Death Cloud is the kind of card that should stay in the main, in favor of cutting World Breaker. Subbing for the Toad, and good luck with all future iterations.

Hey Catgroove, thanks for the support and comment.

I think I've gone back and forth on Death Cloud 4 or 5 times already. It just seems I never want it when I draw it, and when I dredge it I have no way of getting it back. What makes you think it's worth keeping?

I have also considered adding Seedborn Muse but am not sure if I really need her. Thoughts?

If you like the deck, please don't forget to upvote. Lord Hypnotoad demands it.

As strange as it may sound, with your build of this I have used Death Cloud as a jumping off point for us. It's another discard engine that helps get key cards in grave whenever we don't have something else, while at the same time crippling opponents and making it safer to combo off. Like people have said above, I feel like Seedborn Muse is a great workaround to some stack effects, but really comes into her own when paired with Winding Canyons. As of now without Winding Canyons she is just not too impactful with your low density of cards that would benefit from the untaps.
