Order of trigger activation for Hope of Ghirapur?

Asked by thegigibeast 7 years ago

Hello everyone! I saw this new legendary thopter spoiled and can't resist to brew a commander deck with it as the commander... My question is:

I have Sword of Light and Shadow equipped to Hope of Ghirapur and I hit a player with it. Can I respond to this by sacrificing Hope of Ghirapur to be able to return it top my hands thanks to Sword of Light and Shadow's trigger?

No. When you hit your opponent with the equipped creature Sword of Light and Shadow triggers, then because you would get priority instead you put the triggered ability on the stack choosing a target, then you actually get priority and can sacrifice the Hope of Ghirapur. Unless you have something like Willbender to change the target of the sword to the newly dead creature, it will just return the original target.

This has less to do with Ghirapur and more with specifying targets for abilities/spells.

No, you can't.

The Sword triggers when the equipped creature deals combat damage. The ability is put onto the stack after damage has been dealt. Only then do you get priority and can do stuff.

As part of putting the ability on the stack, you have to specify a legal target. You can't sacrifice Ghirapur before that (because you don't have priority), so you can't chose it as target.

no you can not as the thopter won't be in your graveyard when you have to make target choices. but you can Strionic Resonator the triggered ability of the sword to get the thopter back.

It would work something like :

-The sword tiggers from combat damage, you select targets.
- you sac the thopter, puting its ability on the stack
- you copy the swords trigger this time targeting the thopter in your graveyard.

Note that triggered abilities trigger and activated abilities are manually activated. This is mostly nitpicking, but it's important to have the terminology correct in case you deal with effects like Torpor Orb's, which care very particularly about one kind of event.
