Creative Team Deadline Due 5-29-10

Custom Cards forum

Posted on May 23, 2010, 10:05 p.m. by mistergreen527

1) Officially decide on the name of the entire plane and the five shards (we already have URG set as Irindu).

2) Decide what creature types exist on Irindu. Be sure to take the community's ideas into consideration as they comment on tappedout-community-set-(irindu-brainstorm).

3) Start envisioning the art style that reflects Irindu. Find examples that show this. Examples can be taken from previous cards or elsewhere, just keep track of the artist that created each piece of art so that we can give proper credit.

4) Continue to develop Irindu's story. This will be an ongoing thing. Again, take the community's ideas into consideration.

Ok so I think that we should start with the first one and come up with a final decision before moving on. Let us decide on a plane name first. By my count the following are the names developed thus far: Andara Sarcoma Cyqua Tracterra Tharn Turit Tiren Arala Tryst Sandara Lacera Lasera Lexera Locera Incera Vacera Ana'ar

I am not 100% on any of them. I did come up with a couple on this list and they are the ones I would likely start with.

TAMA says... #3

I like Tharn.

May 24, 2010 9:04 p.m.

Zanven says... #4

The only reason I don't like Tharn is because it's too close to Thran. Which already exists.

I say we start fresh and get some new names to throw around for a bit. Keep the creative juices flowing. For the past names none seem to click just yet. I'm just going to generate a list of random names and see if you guys pick up on any of them as good fits or not:

Sarterra Apocrypha Esselt Diatin Abscondia(haha 'cause it's created with stolen mana) Urlogen Memnos Tercarta Formiden Rescera Ascendera

Just to throw some out there and get some ideas going... coming up with names is a battle! Hahaha.

They are all to long.

Art wise I'm picturing the following:

RoHi, 2004.

William Bell, 1950 (reminds me of the old school cards)

The Flow:

Should it be something that the people of Irindu can find all over the shard? I'm thinking flow in a literal sense as in flow of water/lava ... There should be a lot of waterfalls and the idea of things spilling over maybe.

May 25, 2010 12:28 p.m.

squire1 says... #9

maybe they actually harvest it. Using floating aquaduct system to channel the flow where they want it. that starts to sound very FFVII steampunk though

May 25, 2010 12:47 p.m.

honeymomo says... #10

Hmmm maybe... like it's more of an essence? I don't want to confuse people into thinking it's like their mana source tho.

The mechanic I found for it is (Whenever you would draw a card you may instead reveal the top card of your library. If you do, you may cast it for its flow cost and then draw a card, otherwise draw a card.)

It seems like there's only a "chance" flow will work with a player (flavour wise) and if they get the chance then their rewarded (draw a card)... I'm getting more of a green vibe from it if I think about it that way and it's able to travel thanks to the control and blue of the plane? Just brainstorming.

May 25, 2010 1:40 p.m.

honeymomo says... #11

More names to throw around for the plane:

Trethnia Awndia Coradin Fyren Hemnith Jarld (sounds more like a character name :) New Alara Nirinth Negondia Valoren Xechus Yves...

I looked up all the planes and there are none starting with these letters: B, C, F, H, J, N, O, P, T, V, X, Y

Tried to come up with some above. I kinda like Fyren... FYREN BLOCK. WELCOME TO THE PLANE OF FYREN... I dunno hahahahaha.

For creatures I saw a lot of wizards, beats, clerics, weirds, humans, saw a few man eating plants, and lastly the community wants to see dwarves.

All seem good 'cept for dwarves but lets save them for another shard.

Writer's Block?

playlist.com has a playlist with a colour theme!~ If you're in an idea rut have a listen since we're working with the five colours of magic~ Some of my favourite songs are on it too -

http://www.playlist.com/playlist/19586044683?utm_source=homepage&utm_medium=feature&utm_campaign=MBYdago_sa

I thought I would share in case things get stressful :)

May 25, 2010 7:29 p.m.

Xander574 says... #14

where else would you put dwarves?

May 25, 2010 8:19 p.m.

Color-wise dwarves could go on the RWU shard. The majority of dwarves have been red (the dominant color on the RWU shard), but Shadowmoor splashed dwarves into white (Duergar Mine-Captain for example. Also, there HAS been a blue dwarf (Reveka, Wizard Savant ). There have only been two dwarves that weren't red, white, or blue. They were black and also had the subtype zombie (Balthor the Defiled ) or vampire (Irini Sengir ), showing that they were converted into blackness.

Zanven says... #16

I like the suggestion that was made; "Urlogen". Definitely sounds GUB to me. If people have issues with its length, Urlgen potentially or eve Lurgen. It has that proper moist sound, like a marsh or some rotting gunk.

I also love Dwarves in RWU to try and balance out the goblins. Honestly, one of my favorite ideas that was mentioned for RWU America shard was that goblins attempt to create buildings that are taller, and taller, and taller than one another until they become too unstable and crash down into the city, killing goblins and potentially others. It's so flavorful and it has yet to be done. Screams goblins without "done to death".

Obviously this would be against the law, which the WU part would have to deal with. I like the concept that dwarves would be trying to clean up after them or build the city down under the ground to prevent casualties from fallen buildings.

I know this is kind of the wrong place to talk about it but I was on a roll after reading the thread. I wish there was some way to groom the forums as well and cut unnecessary threads and repool all of our information into one big mega area; or possibly two. One for Creative and one for Design.

May 26, 2010 2:22 a.m.

TAMA says... #17

RWU dwarves is cool. I'm still keen on Avora since it sounds really cool I mean I wouldn't want to play a wedge called lurg, lurgen or Urlogen.

May 26, 2010 7:59 a.m.

TAMA says... #18

Clerics don't fit Irindu.

May 26, 2010 8:09 a.m.

squire1 says... #19

Agree with TAMA a lot here. I originally had written about minotaur miners in the goblin shard (URW), but replace that with dwarves and it is perfect.

AVora is a great name for BUG shard

and yes clerics are bad in Irindu. Shamans or wizards yes, but not clerics.

I have a spreadsheet started where I am tracking what people said should be in Irindu. I will post it here later.

May 26, 2010 10:13 a.m.

squire1 says... #20

Here is what the people said so far:

wizard 9 beast 5 Dragon 5 sphinx 5 wurm 5 dwarf 4 Shapeshifter 4 Elemental 3 lizard 3 Minotaur 3 snake 3 Bird 2 drake 2 elf 2 fungus 2 human 2 leech 2 Mutant 2 plant 2 shaman 2 weird 2 Wyvern 2 ape 1 barbarian 1 cleric 1 Faerie 1 hawk 1 octopus 1 ooze 1 orc 1 raptor 1 serpent 1 sliver 1

wizard, beast, Dragon, sphinx, wurm, dwarf, Shapeshifter seem to be our tops. Wizards are a must it seems I would them go with the sphinxes for handlers of the flow, wurms/beasts for primal terrian beef.

I really like the idea of a society of shapeshifters with abilities from switching P and T to cloning, to copying colors, copying spells, using flow, polymorph like effects. i think they could make for some interesting play

for art I see bacgrounds that are very distorted and chaotic. Very Experesionistic, like: http://indianapolis-indiana.funcityfinder.com/files/2008/09/falstrom-art-1-300x266.jpg or http://martydavid.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/09/volcmountainwater-if.jpg

Mybe this is what flow looks like http://www.nrgizr.com/ptgs/Giorgio-Vaselli-Energy-Flow.jpg with forgrounds that look more like surrealism

http://www.piersidegallery.com/artists/parkes/mp2006b-indiansummer.jpg

I dislike some of these paintings but the style is what I am going for

May 26, 2010 3:02 p.m.

TAMA says... #23

I wouldn't think flow would be a physical tangible substance. More an idea a way of living, similar to harnessing Ki or using the force. Sluice mages flow together in a harmony all across Irindu a harmony against the discord of their realm. United their magic is far stronger than the sum of its individual parts.

Squire, we should meet in a real time environment before the deadline and really get things done. Do you have google wave? If not, I can send you an invite. Then we can get things done in a live chat and it'll be faster. Let me know what's up.

honeymomo says... #27

For backgrounds I like the idea of distorted and chaotic. I think your idea of confusion and surrealism is better than impressionistic. I don't think they would juxtapose well and surrealism fits with what I picture the wizards of the shard doing (ramping into RU spells with green).

Impressionism (for the sake of those who aren't sure) is just like the paintings Squire posted but they aren't meant to be distortion/chaos; more based on sensitivity and feelings of the artist. It gives an impression of what they feel the environment to be/look like. I say we save it for a more goody-two-shoes shard (with white), lol. Maybe America (@#$% YEAH)?

May 27, 2010 4:11 a.m.

honeymomo says... #28

Dali, The Temptation of St. Anthony, 1946

This is a surrealist Dali landscape. The theme of it is "Here Dali uses some realistic elements and then distorts aspects of them to create an imagined world in which the unbelievable interacts with the real" (Newberry).

I think that line is a great description of what's happening in Irindu. Here we have our dtc (delicious timmy creatures) as the real and all the RU magic around them are what bends the perspective.

I'm still thinking up some more but I thought I would keep everyone posted.

May 27, 2010 4:23 a.m.

squire1 says... #29

like the concept and the description, but I really want to stay away from Dali. I have always disliked his work. I live like an hour or two from the Dali Museum and would be happy to never go.

I think that the ideas that Honey stated are solid though.

May 27, 2010 8:38 a.m.

honeymomo says... #30

Yeah for sure~ I just went for the big surreal names to pull some ideas: Dali, Cocteau and Franz. Is it the Dali museum in Florida (I think it was Tampa)? I went there two years ago and got a shirt hahaha.

The idea I loved the most so far on a shard was with the goblin society that love the build tall buildings and they keep crashing down/get taller and taller. I think we can throw in a nice homage to Steamflogger Boss too, lol.

From your tally Squire I think to community did pretty good @ finding a creature base. I'm happy with wizards, beasts, Dragons, sphinx, wurm. I'm trying to think if there are more magic using creatures tho. Human Wizards and maybe a Sphinx Wizard ...

We should finalize names soon too. I know Zanven gets off work @ 11 in my time zone... so that would be in 9 hours from the time of this post (oh god). So we'll be up posting ideas of names. We need to have some sounding like they represent the colours... so white/blue/red should be soft yet and black/green/blue should sound absolutely disgusting... I'll be thinking up more names today.

May 27, 2010 2:18 p.m.

squire1 says... #31

yes it is the one in Florida.

i like the one with the goblins too. The only thing that I would change is the minotaurs should be dwarves. The conflict would still make sense and people are begging for dwarf love. I can try and be on around then. I will try to set up the google wave thing at home as well.

May 27, 2010 2:26 p.m.

squire1 says... #32

I also think that Irindu had a lot of shapeshifters. Maybe shapshifter wizards. i think that their physical changes go with the flow, so to speak. I think that they would make an interesting race. Not like the ones with changling, more like a couple that show all the abilitied that shapeshifter subtypes have had over the years

May 27, 2010 2:42 p.m.

honeymomo says... #33

K my email is [email protected]~

Yeah like that Pucca... when a card goes to the graveyard it becomes a copy of it. That would be nice. Mechanics might have an easier time with Shapeshifters like that. I'll ask them.

honeymomo says... #34

Well if you have my email I guess we don't need a chat... emails send quickly too lol~~

May 27, 2010 6:22 p.m.

What does everyone on the Creative Team think should be the goal of Sunday's creative article? My plan was to, as always, keep the community updated with our progress. Then, for the participation portion, I was going to show your art examples and have the community submit art for the four basic lands of Irindu (two islands, one mountain, and one forest). This would give you guys more of a pallet to decide on which art to actually use for the basic lands.

However, if you feel (as a team) that you want something else asked from the community, let me know and we can try to work something out.

May 28, 2010 1:56 a.m.

Xander574 says... #37

i know i'm not on the creative team but i really like the land contest idea. simple but meaningful

May 28, 2010 2:11 a.m.

Zanven says... #38

Land contest is good and a much needed stall; I've been busy with work all week so I apologize that I haven't been able to provide too many contributions in the way of the Creative Team.

In order to kind of run a tighter ship, I'm going to put my foot down on some things for Creative Team in order to meet this deadline; you can fight me on it if you want, but I think we've flown a bit too far off the handle and I want to rein it back in to the domain of Creative Team (not that outside feedback and suggestions aren't welcomed and encouraged, but I feel that it's been preventing us from making some hard decisions).

1) Irindu to date is the only shard that has received an official name. We have a deadline for Saturday that needs to be met in where the other remaining shards and the plane itself need to be named.

I'm putting a naming convention into place that I want to follow. I want to follow the oddity that I embarked upon before, using letters that fall between the letters that Alara used. What that means is that we can only use the following letters as the starting letter of a shard's name : CDFHKLM.

Also, I want the Plane name to be an inverse of Alara (starts with a vowel and ends with a vowel, at the beginning of the alphabet). The opposite would be a word that starts with a consonant and ends with one, like Sadras.

2) We need to decide on the creatures for Irindu. The community already did this for us, and I think everything they suggested was fantastic. Unless anyone has a problem with Wizards, Sphinxes, Shapeshifters, Wurms, (a) Dragon, Beasts, Mutants, Weirds, Humans, and Elementals, I would like to put those ten forward as the creatures. Yes, some ranked higher than others, but they don't fit. These all fit. The nice thing about Irindu is that due to the Flow, we can have some very bizarre combinations that have never existed in Magic before, like a Sphinx Wurm.

May 28, 2010 4:18 a.m.

Zanven says... #39

In regards to the naming convention, C and K make the same sound (most of the time), so I'd prefer if we only used one of the two and not both.

Current remaining planes and their themes/feels :

RWU -> Law-choked kingdom of goblins and dwarves; architecture contests are paramount. Their could be so many laws/so specific that it is humorous as per goblins. I love, love, love the notion of goblins competing to build the tallest structures and having them crash down. This name can be somewhat grandiose or self-important.

BUG -> Infectious rot-land of swampy marsh goodness. This place practically writes itself; the name should sound gross and unpleasant, almost moist.

RWB -> I like mixing the structured hierarchy of W/B church themes plus the demon idea as well. The notion that this plane consists of repenitent (or lying) demons that believe they need to bring forth the apocalypse for the greater good and the worshipers (suckers) that uphold these beliefs. This is the tuff-stuff plane. Hard, concise and serious name.

GWB -> Least fleshed out currently; abundant balance of life, death and weenies. This one is still really open to me and I don't feel we've nailed down any solid core for it. It's definitely the most nature-y/shaman/flower power one out of the planes though, at least from my perspective.

May 28, 2010 4:33 a.m.

honeymomo says... #40

I too like the land contest. I think a few of the pictures and the Dali quote would make for a great base for the community to work with and understand the shard.

1) I'm fine with the naming convention.

CDFHKLM

C: Chass, Chunn

D: Durmet, Drent, Donia

F: Freyus, Fenit, Fetin, Frys, Franit, Fren

H: Hecta, Haech, Horon

K: Keeln, Kinch, Karist, Keml I still love Krevest for RWU...

M: Menot, Mormet, Mesia, Mirmin, Melis

L: Limnel, Lulv, Letna, Lounis, Laen, Lurin

Plane: Sadras would sound better as Sedras and I think a good plane name. I don't know why but it seems like a fit to me. It's not too long and I think people will connect with it.

2) I'm fine with these 10 as well.

May 28, 2010 6:03 a.m.

honeymomo says... #41

RWU -> This name can be somewhat grandiose or self-important. I only put forth Krevest because it sounds very orderly and important, like the word Crest... If it needs to go tho and have a new name then it needs to go~

BUG -> the name should sound gross and unpleasant, almost moist. Urech, Orfa, Urln, Dankin, Wrechin, Ulgren

I'll come up with some more later...

May 28, 2010 6:07 a.m.

squire1 says... #42

personally I disagree with needing a land contest. I also find it to be premature for art. I think structure is primary. I would say that the next one should not be a contest. I think that it should be brainstorming about creature types again, this time about a different shard. This way we can start piecing everything together.

I think that sedras or sadras are great fine.

For the shard names I like the original ones. I do not think we should stress about names that much. Only a few people will pick them apart. When reading nearly noone focuses on the names of places unless they are completely stupid sounding. They just accept them as the names and move on.

For the next post I would like to see us come up with a more cohesive vision of Irindu including creatures, visuals, characters, and story. We should also have a brief description and name of another shard and put that up for brainstorming.

May 28, 2010 8:41 a.m.

Zanven says... #43

As the Creative Team, I think it's our job to stress about the names that much.

Also, I was only using Sadras/Sedras as an example, not a suggestion. It's too close to Sedris, the Traitor King .

I unfortunately am going to be away at work all day again, so I'll be free at 11 PM. That means an hour shy of the deadline, so ultimately it will come down to honeymomo and squire1 to decide. I was hoping that the deadline for names would be per shard, but if it needs to get pushed through, it needs to get pushed through.

The only two original shard names that I am completely against are Oturo and Avora. I can compromise on the others, but those two have to go. Avora sounds too angelic/birdlike, and Oturo is super Japanese. Therefore,

Squire : Please come up with a name for GWB. honeymomo : Please come up with a name for BGU.

As for the shard itself, I do feel it can wait but if not, I leave it in your hands to fight it out.

I have to get ready for work now, so I'm sorry to fling out a set up and run.

May 28, 2010 12:03 p.m.

squire1 says... #44

ok then . we can work with that set up. I will make sure to be on the google wave at 7pm est. If you want to meet me on there Honey, we can work on this and try to finish it up.

May 28, 2010 12:35 p.m.

The deadline is due ON the 29th, not before it. The creative article doesn't get posted until Sunday. So, if you guys need to take that extra 24 hours, do so. However, the sooner the better.

May 28, 2010 12:52 p.m.

Xander574 says... #46

amount of creatures per shard by most to least 1)GBW 2)BUG 3)BWR 4)WUR 5)RUG-irindu

Also i really dont like kilgar...but thats just me and since im not on the team my opinion has no validity. Also the next shard we put up for discusion should be WUR, 1) because i think it has a background and story that is very humurous and relatable. 2) we cant start working on actual cards cause this story is one of the more fleshed out. 3) WHo doesnt love goblins ;) 4) i dont think this plane should have a planeswalker in the first set. allowing it to have one in the second set. (I'd also maybe say that for BWR since that like nicol bolas will be our villain.

May 28, 2010 12:58 p.m.

TAMA says... #47

@ Creative team. Keep in mind for all aspects that the core colours have to stay the same and all themes within.

Avora- Green

Sorok- White

Irindu- Blue

Kilgar- Red

Oturu- Black

The creative team need to remember that what they do effects the design team and the names of the wedges need to sound alright with the appropriate creature types you come up with.

We can accomodate anything the community comes up with but we must work together.

May 29, 2010 9:24 a.m.

TAMA says... #48

Personally I think the original five names suit perfectly but hey like Xander my opinion holds no weight upon these decisions.
