Ikoria —April 16, 2020

With the upcoming release of Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths, I decided on 2 changes.

Dropped:

  • Garruk, Primal Hunter - the longtime friend of kamahl was the weakest of my 3 planeswalkers and the new vivien is ridiculously good.
  • Patron of the Orochi - had this card in the deck for several months and I never once hardcasted it or even used its activated ability when I had it on the field.

Added:

  • Vivien, Monsters' Advocate - a direct upgrade over Garruk. Same cmc, Better tokens, cast from the top of my library, and cheat creatures onto the battlefield.
  • Kogla, the Titan Ape - this card screams defense and fits the deck so well. And having a cmc of 6 compared to cmc 8 of patron, makes it easier to cast and still have resources.

Any particular reason not to run Omnath, Locus of Mana in this? He would act as a mana storage plus big beater.

For a few reasons.

  1. I want to prove that green doesn't need omnath to be good. When I first made this deck, omnath was THE mono green commander, if you weren't using him then you were wrong. So I wanted to prove that mono green was viable without him. Pride is a stupid reason not to run a great card, but I'm sticking to my guns.

  2. You say he's a big beater, but only if I dont spend the mana that he stores. That works counterintuitively to kamahl, who is a huge mana sink that makes all of my creatures big beaters.

  3. In order to make him an asset to this deck, I'd have to add more protection just to keep him alive for several turns to store mana. This means adding more protection and taking away from other aspects of the deck. As it stands, I'm not dependent on any 1 or 2 cards to win. I can bounce backs from board wipes relatively well and have multiple avenues to victory. Using omnath. I feel I'd become dependent on that mana storage and would ultimately ruin the flow of the deck.

Hope that answered you question adequately.

Any consideration of running Nyx Lotus?

Not at this time. I'm not huge on it entering the battlefield tapped. And I also try to stay from mana rocks in this deck as they don't gel well with Collector Ouphe and can't be turned into hard hitting beat sticks like my mana dorks. It's on my radar though if I ever do some major overhauls to the deck.

This is without a doubt one of my favorite decks, I've always been a big fan of ramp into large creatures and swing. I know you said you didn't want to add infect or Eldrazi to the mix, and I can understand that. My question is... If you decided to change your mind about those, what would you add and what would you cut with the idea of just putting in all of the best of both worlds in. Again, I know you stated you won't, but I would still very much like to know what you would add and cut and why. Thanks!

First off, I'm glad you like the deck. Second, as to your questions:

The only infect would be Triumph of the Hordes. Its all you would need.

As for eldrazi, I like World Breaker, Void Winnower and Kozilek, the Great Distortion

Provides great removal and can shut everyone out of my turn.

Thanks so much for the reply!

You don't think other large creatures like Blightsteel Colossus for infect would be worth adding since it's easy to swing due to being indestructible?

Just the three Eldrazi? Not Ulamog, the ceaseless hunger or Emrakul, the Promised End being massive beaters and offering forms of removal?

Also, what cards do you think you would remove to add Triumph of the Hordes and the other three you mentioned?

Again, I appreciate the replies and appreciate the effort you put forth in constructing this deck.

With kamahl as your commander and the right set up, you dont need a huge army of already big creatures, because even your 1/1's are potentially lethal (I make a habit of killing people with Spore Frog to run salt in the wound). Also, cards like Green Sun's Zenith and Natural Order only search for green creatures, so having lots of colorless creatures makes those less effective. And then the last big thing about not overdoing the eldrazi is you have to cast them to get the triggers and they all cost 10+ (for the legendaries anyways) which takes away from you overrunning your opponents.

That's just my take on it. You can literally do any combination of creatures and kamahl will make them better. I've been finding myself using more utility creatures as the deck has evolved because the utility stuff is what I need to stay in the game. Kamahl provides all the offense I need.

What about Dawnstrider for Fog Ability? Reliable staple card and reusable unlike Spore Frog.

Also, you have a lot of cards with similar total power/toughness. In that case, you might want to consider Wild Pair as that would combo well with your big bois and draw effects.

I've always shied away from discarding in this deck, but Dawnstrider is definitely a solid card. I'm gonna playtest it and see how it goes. As for Wild Pair, I ran it years ago in an earlier rendition of the deck and replaced it. Im going to wait until after the full spoiler list of ikoria to see what big changes I'll make, if any, and take a look at adding it back in. Thanks for the suggestions!

Kamerot Hey, have you seen the recently spoiled Vivien, Monsters' Advocate? I think it would rock in this deck!

Do you really have all the foil cards or are the foils on tappedout only?

April 14, 2020 2:06 p.m.

Kamerot says... #18

The deck is foiled out in paper format. This was my first commander deck. And kamahl is my favorite legendary, so I put the money into it. I got lucky with a lot of the foils and got them before the huge price jump a couple years ago.
