v0.3 update —Nov. 8, 2023

OUT - Takenuma, Abandoned Mire, Talisman of Dominance, Thousand-Faced Shadow, Thrill of Possibility, Ilharg, the Raze-Boar, Jaxis, the Troublemaker, Goddric, Cloaked Reveler, Molten Echoes, Frantic Search, Faithless Looting, Decadent Dragon, Cast Down

IN - Cunning Evasion, Firbolg Flutist, Warstorm Surge, Berserkers' Onslaught, Blade of Selves, Broodbirth Viper, Reinforced Ronin, Gut, True Soul Zealot, Elturel Survivors, Skullclamp, Military Intelligence, Chaos Warp

Pretty big update. Cut some stuff that didn't really fit and added in a few that should've been in the first draft. Pretty happy with this update but think it could still use some fine-tuning. Thoughts?

Nice to finally see your G-G&S deck that you mentioned a while back. I'll wait til you finish your primer to check out your reasoning on some of your different choices. At first glance, even with the token production you have, 21 creatures seems a bit light.

Aside from that, my only other suggestions would be to keep Chaos Warp and Wild Magic Surge in your back pocket, since Grixis is pretty limited on its ability to interact with Enchantments once they're on the battlefield. I do agree with your initial hunch to edit out the Ninjutsu creatures.

Looking forward to checking out your primer!

Yeah, with the literal AVALANCHE of product for this game these days, I find it really hard to deckbuild when something new is coming up immediately after I start getting a deck together. It's kind of frustrating, to be honest. It's becoming very hard to focus, at least for me. Dunno if anyone else feels that way.

And, not gonna lie, a chunk of my choices for the deck were there literally just to make it to 100 cards. I find it easier to tweak stuff once it's at 100 and I can playtest it in paper. The ninjutsu cards will definitely be cut, along with a handful of others. Mana base needs tweaking, too, along with adding the maybeboard.

Chaos Warp is definitely going in. I don't think I have any spare ones, which is why it got left out.

Thanks! Always happy to hear your take on stuff.

I've definitely become more selective with what I pay attention to during the non-stop spoiler season. I pay far less attention to any of the Universes Beyond stuff that I don't have much interest in, and will usually skim through the spoiler summaries at the end of their respective spoiler runs. Even then, I'll look more so for upgrades and swaps to my existing decks than I will for creating something entirely new.

It's kinda funny you mention the "just to make the 100" bit, as I have had a similar-ish conversation with my best friend that got me into MtG. He and I have slightly different building styles in that he has a hard time cutting down to 100, and I can usually get a rough 100.

No prob! I might be mis-remembering if it was you or another person on here that doesn't use Universes Beyond cards at all. If you don't mind UB stuff, I'd say don't sleep on Firkraag, Cunning Instigator. Even then, D&D is probably the most thematically similar of all UB to MtG; it's all WotC after all lol. If not, totally understandable for exclusion. Firkraag has been helpful in the games I've played it.

Kolaghan, the Storm's Fury is also fairly on theme as a Dash body, and can act as a go-wide buff for all of your creatures.

Yeah, that was me. lol I've become less... negative on UB cards as a whole, but still won't include any in decks I make. I still kind of wish that UB was a separate format, though that's a discussion for another time and place. lol

Kolaghan, the Storm's Fury is definitely worth checking out. Thanks! I've got a few more I want to add to the maybeboard. I thought I had more, but I guess I deleted my Scryfall list at some point.

You've got a really nice, disciplined, low curve. If it were me, I'd switch out Impact Tremors for Warstorm Surge for the extra oomph and the removal option. I suppose if you're getting a lot of small tokens per turn the Tremors damage will really add up, so maybe swap out Cast Down? Five damage from a dragon token entering will kill a lot of things, and the option of sending it to the face might be worth the times where the five damage can't kill a non-legendary--counterbalanced by Cast Down not killing legendarys but perhaps five damage would.

Cast Down is one of those cards I always add to black decks and then always end up cutting. Will probably do the same with this one. Warstorm Surge is great and will probably be added. Would love to add Terror of the Peaks but $30+ is a bit much...

I recommend The Master Multiplied in here

The Master, Multiplied is insanely cool card design... but I don't like crossover cards. Unless there's an in-universe MTG version of it, it won't be added to the deck.

My build is not as focused on tokens, but I think Lagomos, Hand of Hatred is an upgrade over a couple of your other producers, his tokens are more reliable to hit than some of the 1/1 tokens. Elturel Survivors similarly is probably better than your other myriad creatures. Genasi Enforcers also is a solid turn 2 play before Goro, you're much more likely to hit with those tokens on turn 3 than with the Banshee's on turn 6. I like your Reconnaissance mission, and in my experience having multiple of those effects is worth the slots especially for your token build where you have an engine often before goro-goro is cast. You won't regret any number of Gix, Yawgmoth Praetor, Grazilaxx, Illithid Scholar, Coastal Piracy, Bident of Thassa, or the new card The Indomitable. I think Decadent Dragon isn't a great fit, I noticed it on the recent edhrec suggestions for not much reason ;)

Thanks for the advice! Definitely swapping out Decadent Dragon into my Isshin deck. Definitely adding in Genasi Enforcers and Elturel Survivors and a bunch of other swaps once my TCGPlayer package gets here. Bident of Thassa is a great idea, too. Stuff like that is probably better than regular card draw spells for this deck.

Great suggestions by Goldbranner. Decadent Dragon will definitely be more at home with Isshin. I think it's likely popping up in EDHREC for G-G&S because of decks that have more of a Dragon support subtheme, and utilize Ninjas to a lesser extent.

I'd also recommend giving Saheeli, the Sun's Brilliance a look. I'm currently play-testing her in the slot that I had Genasi Enforcers in.

Paradoxical Outcome might also be useful as dual board protection and draw.

I only added it to this deck because I was looking through my WOE box for stuff to add to make it to 100 cards. Lol It's gonna be one of the first cards I cut, though.

New Saheeli seems great! Two mana for me to make another myriad creature (or something more powerful but I like tokens so myriad came to mind first)? Yes, please!
