NV_1980 on Killian + Lurrus, Silverquill Voltron

Looks pretty neat! Considering the voltron element and Seshiro's comment (with which I couldn't agree more), some additional ideas:

  • Astarion's Thirst: depending on what you're exiling, this could prove to be a substantial boost in strength and toughness for either your commander or his companion.
  • Courageous Resolve: can be the killing blow against at least one of your opponents and allows you to draw as well.
  • Dark Dabbling: excellent anti-wipe spell in your deck, provided you play it mid-game somewhere (which is fine as wipes usually don't appear before then anyway).
  • Hatred: not exactly a cheap addition, but considering its potential that's not surprising. You have plenty of lifegain in this deck to make this an extremely dangerous card.
  • Mandate of Abaddon: again a great potential finisher, especially if your voltron creature is strong enough.
  • Silverquill Command: great booster for your voltron and cheap to cast with Killian on the BF.

Have fun with the deck!

77hi77 on Restrictions to make commanders interesting?

I've been looking through my decks lately, and it's really hitting me how weird my deckbuilding style is. So while I don't consider myself an experienced player by any stretch of the imagination, I might have some perspectives to share.

Similar to what legendofa said, I'm a huge fan of messing with the colour pie. So, one deck I'm working on is Evra, Halcyon Witness, which most people would see as a life gain commander, I see it as a really specialized version of Hatred, but instead of "Pay X life", X is set for you. So that made me think, can I build a mono-white deck that plays like a mono-black? How many options does white have for paying life and sacrificing your own creatures? I'd like to do something similar with the other colours, like how many one-drops can I use to make a funky aggro deck?

A deck I'm still in the theorizing process for is the answer to the question "how funny would it be if I built a deck where I can't cast the commander?". Right now I'm thinking Inalla, Archmage Ritualist but build the deck in mono-blue and just go blue wizard tribal. Maybe I'd allow myself a Fellwar Stone and one card that can let me steal another player's mana rock, so that casting my commander becomes an achievement to celebrate. From there it's a balance of building a viable 99 that has a chance to win the game, while sticking to the idea that I want this deck to be funny. This was very much inspired by watching Commander at Home whenever Olivia gets incoherent from laughing so hard at her own shenanigans.

My favourite deck I've built yet, which still needs quite a bit of work, is Defile Me Daddy Rakdos. Rakdos the Defiler is the commander, and most decks I've seen with him as the commander focus on how painful it is to be hit by him, then double down on that pain. I thought, it'd be more fun if I were to lean into the politics of a commander like that. So I put in a whole bunch of cards that demand deals: Scheming Symmetry, Infernal Offering, Sower of Discord, and other effects that either say "two of us will get a very nice thing" or "two of us will get a very bad thing". I see it as forcing you to get in character, you kind of have to play like a demon to pilot this demon deck.

I've also been eyeing proliferating commanders, mostly because the lands and mana rocks that use counters of some sort are really cool. Peat Bog, Altar of Shadows and Pyramid of the Pantheon, for example. Then balance it with non-standard proliferating wincons, so instead of +1/+1 counters and infect, I've been thinking of cards like Strixhaven Stadium, or the ult on a few planeswalkers (Vraska, Scheming Gorgon immediately comes to mind).

Hope that gave you some ideas! I'm on the exact opposite journey, because I'm too good at restricting myself, and whenever I try to bring friends into the game I can't really lend them any of my decks.

Cabal Stronghold/Cabal Coffers - Former budget, latter not. Big black mana producing lands. Contamination does shut them off though. Should that be an issue, note Infernal Darkness as a potential alternative.

Crypt of Agadeem - Ramp

Bojuka Bog - Personally, not a huge fan of tapped lands. But with fetches, you can use at instant speed. Not needed but worth considering depending on amount of GY decks in the meta.

Shizo, Death's Storehouse > Rogue's passage - Once budget opens, this is an upgrade. Not needed but worth considering.

Contamination - Sacrifice synergy. High synergy with bitterblossom, reassembling skeleton and any other creature that can return to field.

Syphon Mind > Dark Tutelage - While you have a relatively low avg cmc of 3.00, black has better draw that doesn't hurt you as badly. Not to mention it's steady draw, which can be good, but sometimes burst draw is preferred. Syphon mind is draw 3, each opponent discard 1. Budget friendly too.

Skullclamp - Speaking of draw, this goes well with all your sac synergies.

Murderous Rider > Murder - Can hit Walkers, is versatile as a creature with lifelink that can recoup your lifeloss. Almost a strict upgrade.

Feed the Swarm - Removal that hits enchantments. Black has difficult with artifacts and enchantments. I can provide you with some potential artifact removal should you wish depending on your meta. But this might be worth considering given that a Rest in Peace can mess u up.

Maybe Corpse Dance - With your sac outlets, you can ignore the negative aspect of the card. Also do note that after a wipe, you can choose the order in which your creatures enter the GY if they go together simultaneously.

Dark Ritual - Simple ritual ramp

Mind Stone - Ramp when you need it, draw when you don't.

Oubliette - Commander hate

At the risk of being too risky and pricey, Hatred - Do note life loss is additional cost to cast but it can be fun with use with your commander, either with it's ability or commander damage. Not to mention the political aspect of using it on your opponents attacking each other (Bonus points if you use it on their commander).

Several of these definitely fit into the budget problem lol. As much as I'd love a top or Hatred I need to either find someone to trade with or pull it myself. And I'm not opening many packs of Exodus. Looks like a good include if I could get my hands on it though.

Peer into the Abyss was a card I was waffling back and forth on including. I thought It might be a little too much life loss, but that was before I pulled Sheoldred, the Apocalypse, definitely looking to include it now, didn't think about the combo Potential.

And in general I don't like running combo pieces that aren't useful outside of a combo. Leshrac's Sigil is definitely in that category, If I have a combo I'd rather it flow more naturally with the deck

I suppose I'm at the hardest stage of deckbuilding. Figuring out what to cut and actually getting the funds for all these great cards. Thanks for the suggestions

Hatred - Super double edged sword. Life loss is additional cost to cast, somewhat telegraphed, but with lifelink and commander damage can be powerful. You can also target an opponent's creature attacking another opponent, bonus points if it's their commander.

Peer into the Abyss - Combo with sheoldred, can be potentially great on it's own.

Sensei's Divining Top - Great on it's own, even better with shuffling effects/fetches. Combos with bolas and aetherflux

Any reason u don't run the Aetherflux Reservoir + Leshrac's Sigil + K'rrik, Son of Yawgmoth combo?
