Thanks for the link, I will definitely check the deck out. There's a link above to the deck I've made through this thread, if you want to check it out. The deck lost a lot at first, but I think I'm learning how to better pilot it. It's a lot of fun now -- although, I think it needs some more draw, ramp, and finishers. Loving the progress so far though.

For card draw: Daretti, Scrap Savant, Skullclamp, Hazoret's Monument, Faithless Looting, Cathartic Reunion, and Winds of Change. A lot of these are not draw so much as card replacement, which is really common in red. I'm sure there are other red draw or artifacts that I'm unacquainted with that someone might suggest. For instance Slate of Ancestry or Mind's Eye. There is also the chance that you can pick up some lands that might help. Like Path of Ancestry. There may also be some more non-budget options I'm not familiar with, as I play mostly budget MTG.

There is also Illusionist's Bracers, Thousand-Year Elixir, and Thornbite Staff that work well with Krenko in a number of ways.

Anyone have any experience with Vial Smasher the Fierce? I've heard that he is just as oppressive as Krenko and Purphoros in 1v1 games, but I've never played him, nor played against him. So, far my Grenzo deck has lost all matches I've played it in, which, again is not a huge concern since the main idea is fun, but if you happen to see something really important missing from the deck please let me know. Not sure how this deck embodies the philosophy of "playing a weaker strategy with the best possible cards to achieve that goal" given that your strategy seems to be stax/tron and in a mono-color shell at that. I think the claim must have to rest on the fact that Storm Crow is not considered a good card, let alone commander, but surely commander choice is but only part of the overall strategy -- in this case a larger part of the strategy is to have op stax/tron components available to your commander. What's further, dumping $5.5k into stax/tron components is, arguably, one of the more frustrating embodiments of a "pay-to-play" deck. Maybe I'm missing something here...

Hey. Thanks for the comments. Tuktuk the Explorer is cool and all, but he doesn't really get us as much value as Grenzo, Havoc Raiser imo.

I actually don't run Purphoros, God of the Forge because I'm trying to keep the deck somewhat budget. I did run a purphoros deck before I ran krenko, but both were so strong that they were, honestly, little fun to play in a format that highly values casual play. Also, both Krenko and Purphoros feel a little bit played out -- like Neheb is becoming.

If you can afford it Training Grounds is really nice in this deck. Buried Alive can also be helpful if you have certain pieces you want to reanimate. Lich Lord of Unx can also be really helpful, given that he produces more zombies and has an ability that works well with having lots of zombies under your control. Also, given that you have Dictate of Erebos you may consider Grave Pact, as well as some additional sac-outlets like Ashnod's Altar, Phyrexian Altar, Carrion Feeder, Grimgrin, Corpse-Born, etc. Beyond those suggestions there is also the additional board wipe of Noxious Ghoul or Damnation, as well as the much needed card draw given by Rhystic Study, Phyrexian Arena, Graveborn Muse, and, two of my favorites for this kind of deck Careful Study and Frantic Search.

I have my own necromancy based EDH deck, albeit Gisa and Geralf and geared towards 1v1, if you'd like to look at some of the decisions I've made for a zombie-tribal EDH. It's called Bring Out Yer Dead!!! Happy brewing!

I should also like to mention that the deck should probably be considered a "budget" deck -- I actually try to keep most around $125, which allows for a few really strong cards, but the rest have to be cheap and synergistic. This means that things like Cavern of Souls, Blood Moon, Braid of Fire, Mana Echoes, Shared Animosity, etc. are not really options, unless I already own them.

Second, given that this 1v1 the overall CMC (currently 2.75) needs to stay low. So, I'm trying not to include anything over a four-drop, unless it has great synergy (e.g. Kindred Charge or Berserkers' Onslaught) or can be considered a win-con (e.g. Burn at the Stake).

On that note, I've already included a number of the cards that you suggest, including Kindred Charge, Caterwauling Boggart, and Gempalm Incinerator.

All that being said, if you could give me an idea of which cards, out of those suggested, you think are strictly better than cards already included, then I could get a better idea of which possible changes to make. Again, thanks for the suggestions.

Alright, I've starting working on a Grenzo, Havoc Raiser deck. I think I'm going to focus on mana-ramp and giving the goblins some attack attributes (haste, menace, etc.) to get the most out Grenzo's triggers. I think I'll mostly be focusing on "milling" my opponent (since goad will not be as valuable in 1v1) and trying to cast their stuff to make the game more interesting. Thanks for the suggestions all!

Hi all!

As the title suggests I'm looking for a goblin commander for an EDH deck of mine. Some information: I mainly play 1v1 Commander with my fiance, so the deck needs to be semi-competitive, but overall fun is the key here. Also, since this is for a 1v1 deck the lower the overall CMC of the deck the better. The deck that I currently have is a Krenko, Mob Boss deck, but the main problem is that the deck just stomps anything you put up against it and that's no fun. So, I'm looking for a new commander that can fit a goblin shell. The deck does not have to be mono-red, nor does the commander need to be a goblin, but the commander does need to be capable of commanding a goblin army.

Some commanders that might make the cut:

I'm not sure that Norin the Wary or Squee, the Immortal are really all that strong, but they could be fun. (Edit: I've looked a number of Squee decks and they actually look like a lot of fun.) Wort, the Raidmother seems really interesting, but a 6-drop commander in 1v1 is not really ideal. Daretti, Scrap Savant has some clear interactions with artifacts, but I think he may already be a very common commander. Ib Halfheart, Goblin Tactician seems to require too many expensive cards (e.g. Crucible of Worlds) for my current budget. So, if anyone can think of any fun, relatively cheap, and useful commanders to fit a goblin tribal shell please let me know!
