Creature - Maw

Consume 2 (Whenever this creature attacks, you may sacrifice up to two permanents. If you do, defending player sacrifices thay many target permanents of your choice that share the same types.)

Whenever a Swamp is sacrificed to a Maw's Consume triggered ability, you may put a +1/+1 counter on Swampmaw.

As long as you have one or more Swamps both in your graveyard and on the battlefield, Swampmaw has menace.

2 / 2

Create a Spider creature that costs only !

Pax Lotus

Sources you control cannot cause damage to players or make players lose life.

You can only cast one spell of each spell type each turn.

: Add to your mana pool.

Lasting peace, no longer a myth.

August 21, 2019 6:53 p.m.

Target creature gains infect and deathtouch until end of turn. At the beginning of your end step, sacrifice it.

"A Phyrexian concoction of toxins so effective that it poisons both the hunter and its prey. Use sparingly." - The warning label

Create a one-mana-cost creature you'd like to see in a dragon, demon, wolf/werewolf, giant, or treefolk tribal deck.

Savanna Grass-Trampler

Creature - Elephant

Lands tapped to pay Savanna Grass-Trampler's cost do not untap on their owner's next untap step.

3 / 3

Create a one-mana cost creature, something you'd like to see in Modern or in a tribal commander deck (those 1/1 Angels from Horizons come to mind, and Banehound , Healer's Hawk , any rat...).

Orzhov Mortgage & Loan Officer

Creature - Human Advisor

Level Up

Level 1 - 3: (2/3) As an additional cost to cast a noncreature spell, opponents must pay 1 life.

Level 4 - 5: (3/4, Lifelink, Afterlife 1) As an additional cost to cast a noncreature spell, opponents must pay 2 life.

Level 6+: (4/5, Lifelink, Afterlife X) As an additional cost to cast a noncreature spell, opponents must pay 3 life. Orzhov Mortgage & Loan Officer has Afterlife X, where X is the amount of life opponents have paid to cast spells this turn.

"Right now we're offering zero down and competitive interest rates-minus a few minor exceptions, provisos, etc., that is-which will ensure a quality foundation from which you can start any business. Do we have a deal?"

This is obviously way more text than can fit on a leveller card, but when I had the idea I had to see it through.

Create a non-intelligent Leveller creature, you know like a beast, a dinosaur, or a fish.

Haunt of Morose Grief

Creature - Shade

Haunt of Morose Grief cannot be blocked.

Dementia (If this creature would deal damage to a player, instead put that many cards from the top of that player's library into their graveyard.)

: Haunt of Morose Grief gets +1/-1 until end of turn.

"When you enter this swamp, you enter directly into the fourth stage of grief... from which you will never move on..."

August 20, 2019 4:04 p.m.

Deepscale Gapemaw

Creature - Whale Cannibal

Cannibalism (When you cast this spell, you may sacrifice any number of creatures. For each creature sacrificed this way, this spell costs less to cast.)

When Deepscale Gapemaw enters the battlefield, it enters with a +1/+1 counter on it for each creature sacrificed to pay its Cannibalism cost.

5 / 5

Another cannibal!

Valorous Ascension

Until the start of your next turn, your creatures lose flying. Then, at the start of your next turn, if you have 40 or more life, you win the game.

Descent into Vanity

Until the start of your next turn, your creatures get +2/-2 and must attack this turn if able. Then, at the start of your next turn, if an opponent you attacked on your last turn has 40 or more life, that player loses the game.

Do another pair of opposites!

August 20, 2019 10:50 a.m.

Sigalia, the Silence Within

Legendary Creature - Human Avatar

Whenever an opponent discards a card, that player loses 1 life and you gain 1 life.

: Choose a player. If that player has no cards in hand, that player draws a card, then discards a card. Otherwise, that player discards a card.

Hellbent - Sigalia, the Silence Within has hexproof as long as you have no cards in hand.

0 / 3

Unlikely we'll see a mono-color commander deck, but this could be an alternate commander in a dimir or rakdos set in the future. I desperately want a mono-black commander that costs 4 or less that can create hand discard on command. I can only find five- or six-cost commanders that do it suboptimally.

Anyhow, continue the theme: make the commander that you want to see in Commander 2020.

August 20, 2019 1:38 a.m.

On second thought, for the next challenge, let me give you an option:

  • Take another crack at the Aura Saga challenge

  • Create the commander / legendary creature you want to see in Commander 2020

August 20, 2019 12:51 a.m.

Hero's Journey

Legendary Enchantment - Aura Saga

Hero's Journey can only enchant a legendary creature that is not renowned.

& : Until the start of your next turn, enchanted creature gets +1/+1, is not legendary, has vigilance, and can block up to three creatures.

: Put three +1/+1 counters on enchanted creature and it becomes renowned. Return Hero's Journey to your hand.

I brought in the renowned mechanic to ensure that the player couldn't just keep putting Hero's Journey on the same creature over and over. Plus, for flavor.

Someone else give it a shot. This was a real challenge but a lot of fun. I think it can probably be done better than what I gave it.

August 20, 2019 12:41 a.m.

Glabermus Mole-Rat

Creature - Rat

As Glabermus Mole-Rat enters the battlefield, you may discard a card. If you do, you gain hexproof until end of turn.

1 / 1

Create a black card built around the theme of deep and haunting silence. Not like Silence the white spell... more like a silence that by itself sets an unnerving fear within you... the kind of uncertainty and vulnerability that true silence brings. (which is why it should be black)

August 19, 2019 7:52 p.m.

Exquisite Plague

As an additional cost to cast Exquisite Plague, you may remove X -1/-1 counters from any number of creatures you control.

Return half of X black cards from your graveyard to your hand, then distribute X -1/-1 counters evenly among creatures you don't control.

"As I haven't yet found the cure, I will continue developing the plague."

Create a signature spell for a Vraska planeswalker (in an Oathbreaker format presumably). Unless I get ninja'd, then do the ninja

Emrakul, the Otherworldly Visitor

Legendary Creature - Eldrazi

If Emrakul, the Otherworldly Visitor is countered, reveal the top ten cards of your library. Put all Eldrazi creatures revealed this way onto the battlefield, then shuffle Emrakul, the Otherworldly Visitor with the rest back into your library.

Affinity for Devoid (This spell costs less to cast for each permanent with Devoid you control.)

Indestructible, shroud, trample, flying

When Emrakul, the Otherworldly Visitor attacks, exile X cards from the top of the defending player's library, where X is the number of creatures you control with Devoid.

12 / 12

It's not the same as affinity for colorless, otherwise you could break it with a bunch of artifacts. That's why the explanation text is there: the permanent has to have Devoid in its card text. So: it's back on Innistrad with the help of Eldrazi drones helping it get a footing in the plane.

When I saw this challenge, I thought 'oh man, not another eldrazi challenge.' But it was interesting. Now I'm thinking: what would an eldrazi enchantment look like, being flavorfully true to the eldrazi mode of being? We have eldrazi-themed instants and sorceries and creatures. That's the next challenge. Make me an Eldrazi enchantment. Not a tribal enchantment, but a thematic enchantment (Devoid and world-consuming and all that).

Frost Troll

Snow Creature - Skyrim Troll

Whenever a white or blue source would do damage to Frost Troll, it does 1 less damage to it.

3 / 3

Maybe Skyrim wasn't the right crossover (I'm glad I didn't choose Myst...).

For next challenge, let's have a nonblue creature that taps for card advantage. Something great for draft and also still good in constructed (like Dismissive Pyromancer for example).

August 18, 2019 12:06 p.m.

Vrrmav, the Menace of Aclazotz

Legendary Creature - Lizard Beast

When Vrrmav, the Menace of Aclazotz deals 5 or more damage to an opponent, it deals half that much damage (rounded down) to you.

: Vrrmav, the Menace of Aclazotz gets +1/+0 until the end of turn. Activate this ability only with mana produced from Mountains you control.

3 / 3

Okay my fellow nerds, let's port something from Skyrim into MTG. The Dragonborn? Ulfric Stormcloak? Alduin the dragon? Inigo, the Khajiit? The Cloud District that you've clearly never visited? It's up to you!

August 18, 2019 12:53 a.m.

In retrospect, I overlooked two major advantages this card gives... 1) that it lets you look at cards in each player's library, giving you the advantage of knowing what kind of deck they're running, and 2) that this would make for a very powerful signature spell in Oathbreaker-like formats... Maybe this card would be better off just searching your own library and not other's. Its natural balance (for its mana cost) is that the card literally does nothing when you have no Garruk planeswalker on the battlefield. Anyhow, just some after-posting second guessing that I always seem to have

August 17, 2019 2:36 p.m.

Garruk's Multiplanar Beast Hunt

Until end of turn, target Garruk planeswalker gains "+2: Look at the top ten cards of each player's library. You may reveal a legendary creature that's a beast, salamander, bear, boar, kavu, or lizard from among them, shuffle that library, and put it on top of your own library."

"Long have I searched for the legendary Tasazashi, to gaze at its magnificent strength..."

"To make its strength my own."

I intentionally left the text open so that you can give an allied Garruk this ability if you're played 2 v 2 or something.

I know that things can get messy, putting cards from other player's libraries on top of your own. WoTC would never do this for the fact that people might devise ways of shuffling their library so they can "accidentally" (whether truly accidentally or by design) walk away with other player's cards. Imagining an environment where such concerns would never be an issue, this could be a fun card.

Are there even any legendary Kavu creatures? For the next challenge, create another legendary creature that you could search for with this sorcery.

August 17, 2019 2:32 p.m.

Yewnola, the Bird Tower

Legendary Creature - Treefolk

Vigilance, reach

Whenever a bird creature enters the battlefield under your control, it gets hexproof until the end of the turn.

: Target creature you control with flying can't be blocked by creatures with reach until end of turn.

4 / 5

Meant to be played with cards like Migratory Route and other such band bird token generators. The card art would show a towering treefolk tree with its limbs laden with birds of all varieties, even peacocks and cockatrices...

Make a card with Splice that only allows you to splice it onto an opponent's spell!

Clear Elemental Blast

Choose one:

  • Counter target spell that's three or more colors

  • Destroy target permanent that's three or more colors
