Enraged Gorebeast

Creature - Ox Beast

Menace, trample

Whenever Enraged Gorebeast is blocked, it gets +X/+X until end of combat, where X is the difference between the current toughness of the creatures blocking it and their base toughness. (For example, if one of the creatures blocking Enraged Gorebeast has a base toughness of 4 and has already taken 2 damage, Enraged Gorebeast gets +2/+2.)

Whenever Enraged Gorebeast isn't blocked, you may have it deal damage equal to its power to target creature an opponent controls.

2 / 2

Kind of powerful, especially if you can get more than one on the board. Imagine attacking with three of these things. This is a lot of text on account of the reminder text... do you think the helpful explanation text can be cut? I'm not sure.

Arlinn Kord  Flip hasn't been done justice as a werewolf IMO. In one card she transforms into a Planeswalker werewolf. But I want to see her transform from a planeswalker into a werewolf creature (opposite of Origin's planeswalkers that tranform from creature to planeswalker). Make it worth its tranformation without becoming OP for a creature!

Disinformation Council

At the start of each player's upkeep, that player reveals X cards from their hand to you, where X is the number of creatures on the battlefield. You choose a card from among them and that player discards it.

Sacrifice Disinformation Council: Put target nontoken creature on top of its owner's library.

Hate hand-hate decks. Which is why I run one in EDH... intentionally to play against other decks I consider toxic... mwahaha

Start the new page with a mono-red midrange value generator!

Elspeth the Haunted

Legendary Planeswalker - Elspeth

+1 Exile a card from a graveyard, then create a 1/1 white spirit creature token with flying. If a creature died this turn, create two tokens instead.

+1 Creatures you control gain +1/+1, lifelink, and protection from zombies, werewolves, and vampires until end of turn.

-6 Destroy target enchantment or artifact and target creature, then search your library for a nonland permanent of converted mana cost 3 or less, reveal it, and put it onto the battlefield. Shuffle your library afterward.

A nod to Innistrad's morbid mechanic, as well as the humans versus unholy creatures theme (a la Slayer of the Wicked, Elite Inquisitor, etc.)

The ultimate is tricky, because you need to destroy both (an enchantment or artifact and a creature) in order for it to resolve and for you to get your 3-drop thing.

This was a fun challenge but in the time it took me I was probably ninja'd. If I wasn't, then I'll issue a similar challenge: imagine Sorin spending some time on Ixalan.

January 26, 2020 12:28 p.m.

Maraleaf Forest

Plane - Eldraine

Whenever you cast an Adventure spell, you may add two mana of any one color to your mana pool.

Whenever you roll CHAOS, exile all creatures that have Adventure spells from the battlefield and from graveyards. Their owners may cast them by paying their mana cost, and when they enter the battlefield, they enter as if entering from an adventure.

ninja'd? See above

January 25, 2020 7:11 p.m.

Law-Wrapped Mummy

Creature - Zombie

Artifact and enchantment spells you cast can't be countered.

Artifacts and enchantments your opponents control enter the battlefield tapped.

Underneath the rubble, Leonos II found numerous samples of Amonkhet's mummification rites and rituals within the Lazotep. He was stunned that a civilization could employ the dead to maintain the peace and order of the living. Stunned... but not afraid.

2 / 2

I don't think Leonos II has gotten a card in MTG. Make a card for him, preferably following the lore I created above -- that is, that after the war he discovered how Amonkhet preserved its undead and used them in roles in society to improve the lifestyle of the living. What does he do with this information? Where does it take him? What does he eventually become? Show me.

This challenge seems to be going slowly, so I'll answer it with another of my favorite D&D characters and then I'll change the challenge

Hex Durmir

Legendary Creature - Human Monk Cleric

As long as Hex Durmir's power is 5 or more, he has hexproof, vigilance, and first strike.

As long as Hex Durmir's power is less than 3, he has deathtouch and double strike.

3 / 2

Hex was a womanizing hedonistic athiest monk cleric (I know, inherently contradictory in d&d systems). He hated the gods and while he was supposed to be ascetical as a monk, he enjoyed women too much and was insecure as a male, seeing himself in competition with every other man on the planet (he was quintessentially the toxic male). When he wasn't flexing his muscles and grossing out the ladies, he strummed his mandolin, which he was quite proficient with but didn't let anyone know. He was awfully lonely, and had a lot of room to grow as a character.

New challenge: take TWO of the following keywords and make them interact with one another on a single card: graft, buyback, cascade, affinity, evoke, fabricate, explore, miracle, transmute

January 24, 2020 11:25 p.m.

Ooohh this challenge is for me

Moriquendi Difraedrizl, Diabolical Surgeon

Legendary Creature - Elf Rogue Wizard (d&d 3e races & classes not translating to mtg very well here)

Zombies you control have hexproof.

Whenever a creature dealt damage by Moriquendi Difraedrizl dies, return it to the battlefield under your control. It is a black zombie creature in addition to its other colors and types.

, exile a creature card from a graveyard: Create an X/X black zombie creature, where X is the toughness of the creature card exiled this way.

2 / 6

My undead surgeon could also stitch up the wounds of the living, but was loathe to do so. He much preferred the silence of the company of the dead. Also, it's Doctor Moriquendi, thank you very much.

Gosh I miss that character. Same challenge, but also if you wish you can make your favorite d&d character from a podcast or show you watch.

January 24, 2020 1:27 p.m.

philias does it have a name? A creature type? Any power or toughness? Great ability tho

January 24, 2020 11:25 a.m.

the old Irish myth of St. Brendan the Navigator is one of my favorite mythologies. It's concurrent with the viking era, though none of his crew were vikings. There already exist a couple of cards in mtg that make reference to his legendary voyage, so i'll try to tread new territory.

The Voyage of the Navigator

Enchantment - Saga

: Create three 1/1 white human monk creature tokens with prowess.

: You may discard a card. If you do, draw two cards.

: Create a 5/5 blue whale creature token.

IV: Search your library for a legendary land, reveal it, put it onto the battlefield, and shuffle your library.

I'm not sure if this is really something you want in your five-drop slot, it could initially cost you momentum, but provides a lot of value over time if you're able to keep the game going slowly.

Get some rest TypicalTimmy. It's good having you with us and you're no good to us dead!

next challenge: create a creature who IS good to us dead!

January 24, 2020 10:57 a.m.

New challenge: A sphinx with detain in addition to sphinx mind-game mechanics! Make it within Esper's color range

January 24, 2020 12:08 a.m.

Warden of the Sanitorium Ward

Creature - Soldier

Whenever you draw your second card each turn or cast your second spell each turn, you may detain target creature an opponent controls.

2 / 3

Detain is actually one of my favorite underplayed mechanics, purely because it reminds me of when I started playing Magic and I often draft Azorius

January 24, 2020 12:05 a.m.

Electro-Magnetic Aetherizer

Artifact - Equipment

Whenever equipped creature attacks, remove all counters from the defending player and you gain that many counters.

Equipped creature cannot be blocked or targeted by artifacts opponents control.

Pyre Hound, Fiery Hellhound, Underworld Rage-Hound, and Ashmouth Hound are good boys. Make another good puppo

FWIW, all the submissions for Collaborate so far have been really strong and demonstrate how it can be worthwhile :D

January 23, 2020 12:29 p.m.

Oh I misunderstood collaborate. Dang phone, I didn't scroll all the way up through the post. The "2" refers to other creatures you tap, not to the number of opponents you choose. I thought that collaborate meant collaborating with your opponents, not your creatures collaborating among one another. I have an issue with tapping your creatures to get effects: unless you're running a mill deck or an alt win-con deck, tapping creatures means you're tapping your win conditions (your attackers). So if you're not getting mega value out of tapping your creatures (mega value like my girl Prime Speaker Vannifar), it's a mechanic that works against your win condition. All that to say, you have to be careful in its implementation. Like sacrifice decks, you need to build in a win-con (ping your opponents to death with stupid cats, mill opponents vis-a-vis Altar of Dementia) or generate enormous value. This is why I thought Collaborate N referred to N opponents: you collaborate with your opponents and it a very political multiplayer game, which should be within white's color pie. Anyway, I think I met the challenge, but I should specify that my challenge should be to take the original intent of the mechanic's creator and do something strong with it.

January 23, 2020 12:13 p.m.

It isn't so much the insect creature cards themselves that drive insects in mtg, but the token generators like Izoni, Thousand-Eyed, Nest of Scarabs, The Locust God, and Broodhatch Nantuko. But your card's pretty good. Not that you go up against insects very often, but you can put insect generation into your own deck and then generate your own card draw.

Self-Serving Teamwork

Collaborate 2 (,): choose two opponents. You and each opponent puts two +1/+1 counters on a creature he or she doesn't control.

"The 'I' in 'teamwork' refers to me, not to you!"

I love it. All you have to do is play a board wipe, put a single creature on the battlefield, and for one mana your opponents are forced to buff your creature while you have no valid targets in buffing opponents' creatures. Did I understand your collaborate mechanic alright? Let's have another go at it.

Sasuke Uchiha, the Vengeful

Legendary Creature - Human Ninja Noble

Haste, first strike

: Sasuke Uchiha gains either trample or vigilance until end of turn.

, : Sasuke Uchiha, the Vengeful deals 4 damage to target creature or planeswalker. If that creature or planeswalker would die this turn, exile it instead.

4 / 4

So I've been dealing with a ladybug infestation this week. Make me a bug trap. Fly paper or insecticide of some kind. Some kind of insect-hate that could also have other utility since bug-hate isn't exactly mainboardable

January 23, 2020 11:02 a.m.

Urgent Remedy

You may search your library for a card with lifelink or a card that says "You gain N life," reveal it, shuffle your library, and put that card on top of your library. (N can be any number or variable, such as X or Y.)

Fateful Hour - If you have 5 or less life, you may put that card into your hand instead.

I feel like white, to make it more competitive among its peers, could stand to use some more tutors, and to call on its stengths so that monowhite isn't always synonymous with "worst color." This is a very specific tutor for a very specific kind of deck, which helps that kind of deck really get activated. I have a selesnya lifegain growing deck (a la Ageless Entity, Cradle of Vitality, Well of Lost Dreams, etc.) and the new Theros has helped this deck some, but I need a tutor that won't cost $20+ and/or just be another white tutor-for-anything.

Great challenge. Let's do it again. Feel free to explain your deck you're trying to help out, I'm interested in what other people are doing in edh and pioneer (but you don't have to if you don't want)

January 22, 2020 11:24 a.m.

Soul of Vainglory

Creature - Demon

Flying, lifelink

Soul of Vainglory can't attack or block as long as another creature has power greater than or equal to it.

"Vanity conceived a child in demon form, and it grew to be strong. But it will never overcome the fact that its strength its own weakness."

6 / 6

Make a demon creature that goes on an adventure! Where does it go? What is its quest? Think about these things as you make it.

January 21, 2020 11:13 p.m.

Daveslab2022 But you don't lose an Adventure card. It goes into exile, and then you can cast the creature. You still net gain 1 card. It's not much different from having a creature ETB with a draw-a-card effect.

Thanks everyone for taking my challenge so far--its good to get validation for taking a risk in assigning a challenge.

Faerie Aerial Coordinator

Creature - Faerie

Flash, flying

Other creatures you control with flying get +0/+1.

1 / 3

This is for the Faerie commander from Eldraine and a surprise aerial blocker.

What kind of enchantments go on adventures?

Mystic to the Underworld

Sorcery - Adventure

Search your library for a non-creature enchantment card, reveal it, and put it into your graveyard. Shuffle your library afterward.

Elusive Portal of Mystic Ways

You may cast non-creature enchantment spells as though they had flash.

, : Until end of turn, you may cast enchantment spells from your graveyard or exile.

Make a non-God creature you'd want to be your Brawl commander for a Theros or Eldraine-themed Brawl deck.

January 21, 2020 2:55 p.m.

Archive Retrieval

Sorcery - Adventure

Reveal the top two cards of your library. You may put a noncreature, nonland card revealed this way into your hand. Put the rest back in any order.

Arcane Archivist

Creature - Human Wizard

Whenever you cast an instant or sorcery, each player reveals the top card of their library.

1 / 4

Even conditional card advantage in limited it great, especially turn-one potential card advantage. The body is just what blue wants: a blocker. Having some information about what your opponent draws too could be useful in some cases, but as a blue player may be a drawback for announcing when you're about to draw a counterspell (for example). Adventure cards are almost always great in limited--two cards in one--but this one is potentially three cards in one.

New challenge: Create an Adventure card where the creature side Transforms/flips! Its transforming condition should be easy to pull off because you don't have a lot of space for text on the card (my card above was pushing it, I must admit)
