Polupus Deckling

Hi,

I love weird decks. I love budget decks too.

Modern is the format I'm most comfortable building in, but presents a challenge for building affordable weird decks that can survive in such a crazy fast format. So mostly I play casual and sometimes take the decks to small local tournaments to tweak them.

My strongest color is black by far, followed by blue, then white.

I'm mostly attracted to control or combo style decks, but I do occasionally like aggro if there is something novel about the creatures.

Hey! I'm hoping you could take a look at a deck I'm tweaking! I like that you like, black. It's a cool color!

@Izu_Korasu:

I don't really see how the Gigadrowse, Tome Scour, or Archive Trap help. Could you explain more?

I think Calciform Pools as a 1-of would be great in here to sink any unused mana into for big X spells.

Replaces Glacial Fortress.

I've been testing this card a lot lately and it doesn't do so hot with all the Death's Shadow running around.

It also requires someway to ditch the shackled creature to keep up with swarming aggro decks just loading the board and overwhelming you.

I can think of situations for a control deck where I'd like the flexibility of an unblockable that leaves snapcaster up on their turn so "strictly better"?

Tough goal building a budget jund so good on you. I think Putrid Leech can find a better replacement though, but I've never played with it. How has your experience been with it? Does the life loss hurt you since you'd be trading 2 of yours for 2 of theirs? I'd up your Kitchen Finks count to offset this.

Great deck! What are your thoughts on swapping 1 Celestial Colonnade for 1 Creeping Tar Pit?

Makes opponents Pithing Needle and Surgical Extraction less effective and you can hold up 1 more mana when attacking. Downside is it dies to bolt.

@AtomicEmpire : Thanks! I appreciate that. I've been a fan of your esper for awhile. Cryptic Command would be great. My only hesitation is that it's 4mana and I'm running only 20 lands. I do like the bounce for extra tutors of Trinket Mage. I'd have to cut 2-3 cards for some extra islands to fit cryptic in there. Any suggestions for the cut?

@ Xica: Metallic Rebuke lets me drop artifacts in the first 2 turns and still hold an island up for counter mana. Dissolve isn't very good in here because the artifacts already give the deck free card filtering, so it's pretty much just a Cancel in most cases.

This deck is slowly coming along. I really think counterspells shore up a lot of lantern control's weaknesses. I would like suggestions for dealing with non creature threats/hate cards like Stony Silence or Damping Matrix if they somehow make it to the board. Right now my main contenders are Set Adrift, Echoing Truth, Commit, & Reality Acid. Any thoughts on those or can you think of another spell that could work?

Pulse of the Fields does great work against burn. I noticed you only had 2 Leyline of Sanctity in the side when most play 4.

Also it forces aggro to go wide or put down their big guys into a verdict since you're not running any blockers that would make them need to do more than just ping you with 1 guy.

looks like you have some human/vampire synergy going.

Falkenrath Aristocrat is a good sac outlet if you are willing to add red.

Vampiric Rites is cheap and useful with tokens.

a lot of humans make tokens when they die like Doomed Traveler, Xathrid Necromancer, and from the new set you get Doomed Dissenter and Anointed Procession.

Zulaport Cutthroat can also act as extra Blood Artists

Ok I think I'm at a good place with this deck. I have Shrieking Affliction in there for multiplayer and dodging artifact hate but it could easily be swapped for the rack in a planeswalkers heavy meta. My idea is to bait the opponent into bringing grave hate then siding in Eternal Scourge and some grave hate of my own. Thoughts?

I think maxing out Ghost Quarter and Archive Trap is your best bet at speeding it up.

Also a lot of cards aren't modern legal.

Love the frank Reynolds ref!

I would go with more removal/discard over Wall of Omens but that's just me.
