New-ish to MTG, but not to CCG's. I'm mostly having fun, and already want out of standard.

I'm beginning to build my first EDH and Modern decks. Any thoughts, ideas, feedback, and advice on the Meta, other formats, what to look out for, best boxes to purchase given my desires, biggest errors to avoid, fun crazy stuff to try, etc. is more than welcome. However, please keep in mind that I'm playing for enjoyment, and only for enjoyment. That enjoyment can (and frequently does) include the pure unbridled pleasure of making the most annoying and/or unnecessarily complicated combo decks possible. Yes, I am that player; the one whom without doubt is destined to lose that third match, but infuriatingly beats your perfectly crafted deck the first or second time.

My first event was Aether Prerelease, but by that time I already had five boxes of my (initially hated and now favorite) "emo" block (SOI/ELD), four of BFZ/OAG, three of KAL, as well as my own standard deck and the KAL Planeswalker decks.

Since I'm now interested in EDH and Modern, please offer your thoughts on the best sets and why. Since my initial boxes: I've acquired 2 of Amonkhet; 2 of Hours; more SOI/ELD and BFZ/OAG; about 500 Revised, Unlimited and Forth cards; a few (not-of-worth) Beta cards; a Scars of Mirrodin fatpack; innumerable prerelease kits (8 Hours, 2 KAL, 6 SOI, 4 ELD, etc); at least one fat pack for each set back to Orgins; a couple of intro decks; several duel decks; the 2017 Commander decks... So I'm willing to invest in the game, but I'd rather crack packs than buy singles any day (even if it's not "financially wise").
