Played Magic as a kid from 1994-1996 (Revised through Chronicles). Just got back into the game in 2015 and I'm learning as fast as I can.

All decks listed are my own unless otherwise noted. These are decks I currently own online and are listed exactly as I am currently playing them.

Why not Bane of Bala Ged over Ulamog's Crusher ? Would think coming down a turn earlier as well as having a better ability (and not being forced to attack) would outweigh the extra +1/+3? I'm not Tron player, though, so I dunno just how much you value the 7 drops over the 8s.

Oops, I'm sorry. It was Shrapnel Blast ! Not Galvanic Blast. 17 dmg :)

June 14, 2019 8:35 a.m.

<3 <3 Scuttling Doom Engine! Reminds me of my old M15 deck that used Generator Servant to power out the Scuttling Doom Engine , then used Galvanic Blast for a potential early 16dmg burst. Also included the ol' turn1 Darksteel Citadel into Ensoul Artifact on the Citadel to make an indestructible 5/5 that can attack on turn2. Or you could use it on Ornithopter for a 2mana 5/5 flyer. Ghostfire Blade was great in the list, too.

Man, what a crazy fun standard deck. I miss Doom Engine and Ensoul Artifact :( Glad to see people haven't forgotten about that card. Still think he will have his day eventually...

While you are right that Gut Shot is less impactful than most of the board, it's not strictly worse than Dismember since it allows you to curve out while still having some interaction vs opponents that are playing important utility creatures like mana dorks. Can make a world of difference in certain match-ups like elves or sometimes vs affinity. I was turned on to the card by someone else (some pro player/streamer back a year or two ago). I was never a big fan of the card prior to that. But, yea, cards that allow you to still use all your mana AND curve out while still disrupting the opponent work exceptionally well in decks like stompy or little zoo, etc. The random reach is just icing.

However, I do agree with you that it's probably the least impactful (certainly least sexy) of the cards in the board I used up above. I've noticed the meta (both local and online) is quite different than when I last played a lot back in 2016-ish and I haven't been getting as much use out of the card as I once did. I actually don't have it in my paper deck atm. It is replaced by a Prey Upon , but that is only because I do not have a 3rd Dismember. A lot of this is due to how often I run into UR Phoenix and specifically Thing in the Ice  Flip.

Thanks for the suggestions. I mentioned Garruk's Companion in the description. I see why some people run it in the super aggressive versions but I feel the extra health on Tusker, esp for evolving Experiment One's but also just for allowing me to attack into more creatures and working better when you have Rancor on the card just makes it a more effective creature overall. I do see why some people still like and run the card, though.

Although I have not mentioned much here, you will see that just the other day I discussed many of your points/suggestions on this deck's comments section - Lushy bushy (as well as a few other points). I also discussed some of these same points with this deck's author - Big Green Daddies.

The ones I don't mention, from Nettle Sentinel down, I believe are not impactful enough to be run in a competitive Stompy list atm. Similar cards would be Prowling Serpopard , Great Sable Stag , Witchstalker , etc. (although these are all 3-mana examples). I believe the modern green Stompy list is just too tight to include cards like that anymore, esp now that Dryad Militant is almost required and we're gonna want at least 2 (probably 3, or even 4 for some people) Collector Ouphe in the board.

Thank you for your comment!

I really do love this inclusion to the BG Rock list, though. Having a card like that when you're fighting a top-deck war is fantastic (after wrecking their hand with discard and an active Lili). Reminds me of a few years back when Jund was good... opp being in top-deck mode while my Lili's up-ticking w/ my Huntmaster of the Fells  Flip being the only other thing on the board. This little guy may actually be better overall, though. Being 3 mana less than Huntmaster.

I wonder if (or by how much) Hexproof -> Indescructible would be better than the current level bonuses... Then again, that's a bit too close in design to Fleecemane Lion. Seems like it'd be useful on this "mana sink" type of card (not to mention on a 1-drop green dude). "Protection from Everything" is pretty rare and interesting, though. And powerful, lol..

Hey man, I don't know if you remember but we talked a bit a few years back regarding BW Tokens (in comments both on my list and one of yours). I wasn't really playing much these last 2-3 years, but lately I've getting back into it. Anyway, I was wondering if you are still actively playing that archetype, because Modern Horizons has some cards that got me pretty excited for BW Tokens right since they were first spoiled and I finally jotted down a new list on my page. It may or may not be a little all over the place, since there seem to be so many new interesting cards, but if there's any insight you can provide I'd appreciate it. I can't even test at the moment because I don't have the cards anymore, but hopefully I will soon. Anyway, thanks if you can. If not and/or you're just not playing (or playing bw) atm, that's all good. Sorry for the wall o txt...

I see. Well, I like the deck. <3 BG Midrange/Rock but, tbh, I never would have thought of putting Hexdrinker in the list, haha. And I've been looking for a reason to play the dude just cause of how cool it looks, lol. First thought was Green Stompy, but ultimately I just couldn't see him working out well in that deck (over any of the current threats).

nvm, Running the full 4 Confidant won't play too well with Kalitas. Oh well.

Magic Aids' Hexdrinker deck

This guy's videos can have a major effect on card prices. If it turns out this deck is good (I'm not sure if you're familiar with him, but his decks are either "just good" or literally meta-breaking (he made/re-introduced the humans deck that's prolly the best deck in modern atm as well as several other tier1/2 decks). If you like Hexdrinker you may wanna grab em while they're like $7-8USD since it's a mythic and, yea...

I haven't even watched the whole video yet, haha. Just wanted to post you the link so you can check it out yourself.

I'm not big on the card myself, I just thought most of these types of decks included one. But I guess it loses quite a bit of it's impact in modern compared to legacy.

Btw, I wanted to mention that I traditionally had always liked using more 3-drops in my deck. I always had 4 Baloth, and even after Champion was printed I still liked to keep 1-2 in the deck along with usually 1 other 3-drop like Dungrove Elder. Then, when I recently got back into the game and playing stompy, I even played around with a 1 Rhonas + 2-3 Ghalta build. The move to a more low-down, even more aggressive list took place recently after noticing a few things.

I was looking for successful stompy lists on mtgtop8 (there usually aren't too many) and the only recent list was this one, which actually won the 46-player Hareruya event - https://www.mtgtop8.com/event?e=21669&d=345568&f=MO. I was surprised to see him running good-ol' Giant Growth over Vines and 3 Garruk's Companion instead of Scooze (along with the full 4 Kalonian Tusker ). The sideboard is short+sweet and it's obvious he was just going for full-on aggression. I figured a deck like that can get a lot of free wins when the opponent stumbles just the slightest at the start.

Then, while looking on this website I came across this list ( Big Green Daddies ) and that's when I decided to lower the curve a bit to see how it worked. I have to say that so far it does seem better (for me). You should def give it a try once/if you start playing in a larger meta. Personally, I am even gonna give that hyper-aggressive version (the Japanese one) a shot next week just to see what happens, haha.

Omg, I totally did not think of the devotion.... I guess it's like merfolk ppl forgetting about high tide, lol. But not once since I discovered the card did I realize it provides the 2 devotion for stompy... haha

Anyway, sure, I think Relic is a good in-between when it comes to those 3 cards, and it definitely has been the usual hate card I've seen in stomp boards these past few years. I have been noticing Crypt more and more since Dredge and Phoenix started dominating, but Relic is probably still the most popular overall. If I still had them I probably would have stuck with them from the start.

Having 3 Scavenging Ooze as well as the 4 Dryad Militants really does help me out and make it easier to play Wheel, since even if I don't draw it right away or play it til turn 3+, I can prevent a deck like Dredge or Phoenix from building up and utilizing a large graveyard prior to the Wheel coming into play. So take that into consideration as well. For a deck like yours it may be more of a liability.

Tbh, I was using Tormod's Crypt s prior to the Wheels because I made it as a super-budget deck at first (no Scooze either). I do think Relic is probably better than Crypt for the deck in general, because Relic can continuously get rid of stuff vs most "graveyard-matters" decks until either you win or they just dump too much stuff in eventually. Against a deck like Dredge, though (and even Phoenix), they utilize the GY so fast that you usually just need to clear it relatively early on. Sometimes this is good enough for our deck because we're so fast, but I've heard Dredge players saying they really aren't scared of that kind of "one-shot" graveyard removal. What they are afraid of is Rest in Peace . Well, we don't have RIP, but Wheel is close if we can get it out early. It kinda sucks if we don't have it right away and they get a chance to start utilizing the yard due to Wheel not actually dealing with stuff already put into the yard, but in games where we don't literally start out with our gy hate I believe we're in trouble already so we may as well just pray to race them.

Wheel also gives you free wins vs Mill strategies (which actually aren't THAT uncommon for me to see) by allowing you to use it on yourself.

I'm actually just testing the Wheels out right now, though (I've used them before but long ago and in other decks), so I don't ultimately know if I'll be keeping them or going back to Crypt or getting Relics again. Crypt was actually kinda cool just because, like with Gut Shot , it allows us to get some hate in without affecting our curve/pressure. That's actually pretty important as well with Stompy, so yeah this is another choice that I have trouble with, mainly because I just don't play nearly as often as I used to. Makes me try and theorize about some things instead of just going off of raw data. If I end up playing a lot of games after Horizons comes out and forming a more solid decision I'll update my list and let you know.
