DanteBeleren Deckling

I started playing during the end of Shadowmoor with Shards being my first release. Originally was just a "kitchen" table player at my school with 10+ other guys. When EDH started circulating around 2008 I was immediately hooked and built Sharuum the Hegemon. It was total Esper themed garbage... But that didn't stop me! Continued to play and grow as a player while I began reading the books and digging into the lore of the game.

Around 2010 a local shop began holding a weekly EDH league where I started meeting a lot of different players and styles to play. Took a break from the game while I went to college, but picked it back up a couple years later just in time for Journey into Nyx.

So here I am 9 years later, ever the EDH player and lore-whore. I like to build decks that a new player could pick up and play easily, but even advance players will find enjoyment in. I love lore styled decks and they are my favorite to build, but that's not to say I won't occasionally build a deck that will rip out an opponent's heart and set it on the table in front of them to look at.

All that said, I hope you all enjoy going through my decks and even give them a try at some point. If you wanna give them a +1 I'll be overjoyed, but I can live with some good suggestions or comments. Either way, thanks for time in reading all this and taking a look at my decks!

Snapdisastermage: Yep. At the end step of the Monarch's turn they draw a card just like "normal".

Snapdisastermage: For a player to become the Monarch, a card must be played adding the Monarch "rule" into the game. After that, a player becomes the Monarch by dealing combat to the current Monarch. You don't want other player to become the Monarch typically cause the Monarch gets extra card draws, but you have the ability to smack everyone necessary to get that power back.

That really depends on how you wanna play the deck. Typically when I go for theme decks, I focus on the creatures being in that theme and cutting the rest. Relaying on the rest of your deck to support your theme (good or bad) isn't the worst thing to do. Since you're playing Gruul I would go for 25-30 creatures (including general) with 32-35 lands depending on how much ramp/rocks you end up running. Of your creatures, if you end up going with 30, try for ~25-5 (were)wolf-support average.

Something I always want to make sure people understand, this is you deck. If you disagree with any suggestions, and/or feel a card is terrible or fully deserves to be in the deck, by all means do as you see fit.

Personally I would go with the following creature base:

  • Eternal Witness
  • Nylea, God of the Hunt
  • Purphoros, God of the Forge
  • Xenagos, God of Revels
  • Stonebrow, Krosan Hero: This was my original WW general before Shadows over Innestrad came out, so more sentiment than anything lol

    Alright, I'm back! So obviously the trick with Werewolves is, you don't want to cast spells, nor do you want your opponent's to cast spells either. The best solutions for this are: cheating in your cards and inhibiting your opponents from theirs. R/G can do that first part fairly easily, but inhibiting is a little trickier since you don't get stuff like Silence. That in mind, cards I would include are as follow.

    Werewolves are a tough, but fun creature type due to their odd flip mechanic. I would also recommend keeping in your anthem effects, but I'm personally not a fan of stuff that only beefs up one creature like Stoneforge Masterwork outside of Exalted style decks. I wanted to also remind you that you are running a green deck, so don't forget ramp cards like Kodama's Reach or Cultivate.

    Also, mana dumps in this deck style will be huge for you. Any card that stays on the field but you can pour mana into on a whim will be huge if you want to do something, but also wanna flip your wolves. You already have Kessig Wolf Run which is a prime example or Druidic Satchel.

    While not necessary, I would be interested to see you build a list up with only (Were)Wolf creature cards. It'll be much more difficult to build around, but I can attest that the satisfaction of beating face with it will be that much sweeter.     Mmmmm, Werewolves are my jam. I'll look over this when I get the chance and make some suggestions for ya, but I will lead with: You can probably drop your creature count a little if you need more support cards.

    ALSO! Are you going for Pure Flavor/Theme, or Werewolf base that can also kick ass?

    Seems alright. Few cards seem a bit... odd or like you were trying to replace cards?

    I'd recommend removing the following:

    Judging upon you creature base, you don't have much of a win-con. You have tons of 1 and 2 drops which will help Yisan trigger multiple times in one turn, but no end result. The only two I'm really seeing are Craterhoof Behemoth and Shaman of Forgotten Ways. While both are good, Craterhoof seems moot since I imagine your board being blown up before getting the chance to attack with anything besides him. If you trigger Shaman early on, that can easily be a game-ender, but what happens if someone uses Swords to Plowshares on it before you get the chance? Not trying to be mean, or pick you deck apart, but unless I'm missing something your deck has a solid premise with nowhere to go. Most Yisan deck's I've seen or played against create some form of stax, or each creature he cheats into play has a prominent or dominating effect on the board/game. Being fast as hell feels super awesome until you have nothing to do, but can't win.

    Some cards I'd recommend are below and some will hopefully help abuse Yisan's verse counter-curve:

    So many cards... Point being, ramping into Yisan and triggering his ability is awesome, but a moot point if you can't hit anything that does something. But again, I could be completely missing the point of what you're going for, and if so I apologize for the wall of text. It's your deck and you are free to do with it as you please, I just wish you a grand time of obliterating your games.

    Carpet of Flowers seems really out of place. Unless your play group has an abnormal amount of mono blue players, you don't usually wanna use cards that focus on hating on a specific land or color type unless it's interchangable (such as Iona, Shield of Emeria). Instead, try for more ramp that isn't dependent on others OR haste enablers.

    I'd recommend the following, but of course take them with a grain of salt since I'm not sure what all you're going for lol:

    On the opposite side, I'd recommend removing/swapping the following:

    • Clan Defiance: In your colors you have access to better (and still affordable removal), plus your focus should be Mayael, ramping, and creature abilities.
    • Harmonize: It's not bad, but you don't wanna draw into your creatures.
    • Carpet of Flowers: The original reason stated above.
    • Quicksilver Amulet: Not a bad alternitve, so not a high priority, but again, focus on Mayael and this could be another creature.
    • Arlinn Kord  Flip: She just seems... out of place. If you like her, keep her by all means, just seems off. Maybe Xenagos, the Reveler instead?
    • Wild Ricochet: I like this card, but it's expensive. Reverberate or Fork will typically do what you want for less mana. If you're having a problem with blue players, try Red Elemental Blast

    A friend of mine has a super charged Mayael deck (Mayael's Eldrazi Escapades) that I've been playing against for years. I have a high respect for the deck and hope you have fun with yours, budget or not.
