yasova dragonclaw + willbreaker?

Asked by griffstick 8 years ago

Mind if I borrow that? ($10 Budget) top deck. is where i came up with the idea, he uses Throwing Knife + Willbreaker to do what i'm doing. i'm not sure if it's exactly the same though. Yasova Dragonclaw's triggered ability happens at the beginning of combat before attackers are declared. once her ability triggers i would have to target a creature before paying the cost thus activating Willbreakers triggered ability, gaining control of the targeted creature. for further details of how the interaction of Throwing Knife + Willbreaker combo works go to top decks click on Mind if I borrow that? ($10 Budget) deck and read the description so you can get the rules of how it works

What will happen is that you activate Yasova Dragonclaw's ability targeting an opponents creature. This triggers Willbreaker's ability, which gets added to the stack. Provided no responses or additional actions, the stack start resolving. Willbreaker's ability resolves first giving you control of the creature. Yasova Dragonclaw's ability will actually be countered by the rules as it tries to resolve since it specifies that is must target an opponents creature.

So you will gain control of the creature from Willbreaker but it will not get to untap or get haste that turn.

Oh, I see what the question is now. Please try to explain it a little more clearly or directly link to the relevant area in question.

Yes, Yasova Dragonclaw's ability has the same beneficial interaction in that the ability always triggers and targets, thus triggering Willbreaker, and you're not required to pay for the ability.

Slycne maybe I'm misunderstanding what yiu're saying, but neither Yasova Dragonclaw's nor Throwing Knife's ability target anything unless you pay the cost, since it says, that you can pay the mana or sac the knife and if you do that you get to target something. So if you don't pay the cost the second part of the ability never goes off, so nothing is getting targeted.

user:magicnerd0815 That is incorrect. The wording is a little counter-intuitive wording, but these ability still trigger and in order to go on the stack you need to specify a target. As they are resolving is when the decision is made if you want to pay for the effect.

Magic Judges Blog: Yasova Dragonclaw pays for the trigger only on resolution

  • 603.5. Some triggered abilities' effects are optional (they contain "may," as in "At the beginning of your upkeep, you may draw a card"). These abilities go on the stack when they trigger, regardless of whether their controller intends to exercise the ability's option or not. The choice is made when the ability resolves. Likewise, triggered abilities that have an effect "unless" something is true or a player chooses to do something will go on the stack normally; the "unless" part of the ability is dealt with when the ability resolves.

Note that Yasova Dragonclaw still has the targeting restriction. But yes it is the same type of triggered targeted ability that requires payment on resolution to have an effect. As such Willbreaker will trigger giving you control of the creature.

Mind if I borrow that? is the deck. Yes, it triggers in the same fashion as Throwing Knife. As Gidgetimer stated, you still have the targeting restrictions.
